WARNING
Decompression diving is an inherently risky activity that can result in
personal injury, including but not limited to decompression sickness, oxygen
toxicity, gas embolism, inert gas narcosis, or death even when following all
currently established safety guidelines, decompression protocols, depth and
time constraints. Do not engage in this activity without first receiving
proper training in the use of particular breathing gases and stage-
decompression procedures employed and acknowledging and preparing for
the inherent risks involved.

This text is the culmination of several years of theoretical research and practical
fieldwork with Reduced Gradient Bubble Model Decompression Tables. Without a
doubt, the scope of its application exceeds any other published dive tables in the world.
Many people deserve credit. First, my deepest appreciation to the host of divers,
whom I call the “living laboratory,” for willingly exploring the forefront of diving
technology by implementing RGBM schedules since 1998. I owe a tremendous debt of
gratitude to Bruce Wienke for his mastery of RGBM decompression theory and the
constant mentorship and patience he has shown me over the years. I also need to extend
my sincerest thanks to Jan Neal for her untiring editing and computer wizardry. Finally,
my heartfelt gratefulness to my core strength - Diane, Seana and Caitlin – for always
being there for me and for understanding why I couldn’t always be there as I toiled over
this manuscript.

CHAPTER 1
Although slower ascents certainly improved decompression for caisson workers and divers
alike, some divers continued to suffer from this malady. Of course, it’s important to point out
that the diving depth limit was around 120 feet seawater (fsw) or 36 meters at this time and that
staging divers’ ascents was more difficult than that of caisson workers.
In 1908, while working with the Royal Navy, the English physiologist John Scott Haldane
observed that goats, when brought to the surface after being saturated to 165 fsw (46 msw),
did not develop decompression sickness (DCS) if subsequent decompression ceilings were
limited to half the prior ambient pressure. From this Haldane, and others to follow, extrapolated
human tissue could tolerate elevated dissolved gas pressures (tensions) over absolute (ambient)
pressure by a factor of two before the onset of symptoms would occur. He then constructed
diving schedules for sea level exposures that limited the critical supersaturation ratio accordingly
across multiple hypothetical tissue compartments.
1
CHAPTER 1
At the same time that Haldane was developing his dissolved gas model Sir Leonard Hill was
working a decompression model that advocated a slow uniform reduction in pressure
accommodating the slowest saturating tissue. He rightly questioned the logic of stage
decompression because body tissues probably act more “analog” (in gradients) than “digital”
(on or off or all or nothing). This is why he believed the prevention of bubble growth was
dependent on the maximum-state pressure gradient between the tissues and their environment or
ambient pressure. The crux of his theory was pressure differential or “delta P,” which became
known as the "Critical Pressure Hypothesis.” The results appear very similar to the saturation
tables that were later developed by American physician Christian Lambertsen and others that
are still in use today. In the past, the difference in applicability between Haldane’s and Hill’s
models was whether or not exposures were relatively short or long and shallow or deep.
However, neither model worked for all applications, yet, had Hill's work been more universally
accepted, it is easy to speculate that deeper decompression stops and slower ascents might
have been commonplace decades before now.
In 1937, the U.S. Navy developed its own set of tables, the major difference being the
assignment of separate limiting tensions (maximum or “M” values) to each individual
compartment. An M-value is the maximum allowable inert gas pressure of a specific theoretical
tissue. Later, in the 1950s and early 1960s, other U.S. Navy investigators addressed repetitive
dive exposures by employing six different compartments (5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 120 minutes), with
each compartment again possessing its own limiting tension (M-value). These decompression
tables are still in use by the U.S. Navy and many diver certification agencies today.
The modern Royal Navy Tables are also descendants of Haldane’s early work. However, both
the limiting tensions (M-values) and the repetitive diving procedures are more conservative than
the U.S. Navy tables.
Professor A. A. Bühlmann also utilized Haldane’s theory but with 16 half-time compartments
ranging from 2.65 to 635 minutes. Many of the dive computers designed over the last several
years utilize compartments with half-times up to as much as 720 minutes. This proliferation of
compartments is an indication that the actual mechanics of inert gas uptake and elimination is not
entirely understood. Originally, Bühlmann employed E-E algorithms but his later models
employed E-L algorithms (exponential in-linear out), computing inert gas elimination slower than
uptake.
Essentially all biophysical models of inert gas transport and bubble formation try to prevent
"bubble trouble," or the bends, however, they differ on a number basic issues, which still remain
mostly unresolved today. The five missing keys are:
1. The rate limiting process for inert gas exchange, blood flow rate or gas transfer across
tissues
2
CHAPTER 1
4. The critical trigger point best delimiting the onset of symptoms, such as the amount of
dissolved gas in the tissues, bubble volume and the number of bubbles within a specific unit
or tissue volume
5. The actual nature of the critical insult that causes the bends
While these issues confront every modeler and table designer, they remain ambiguous and
perplexing in real-life application and translate into dilemmas for these researchers who have put
their best efforts forward to describe decompression phenomena.
Dissolved gas models limit degrees of tissue saturation, assuming gas exchange is controlled by
circulatory rate of delivery (perfusion) or gaseous diffusion between blood and tissue. The
exchange of inert gas in the Haldane model is driven by the local gradient, which is the pressure
differential between dissolved gas in the arterial blood and the local tissue tension or the
dissolved gas pressure within the tissue.
Dissolved gas models seek to maximize the rate of gas uptake or elimination by maximizing this
gradient. To achieve this goal, the strategy is to bring the diver up from depth to as close to the
surface as possible while staying within M-value constraints. The problem is that any bubbles
present are now at their largest permissible cumulative volume and bubble (free phase) size for
that depth or M-value. By treating larger cumulative volumes and bubble size with pressure in
the shallow zone in lieu of increasing free phase (bubble) elimination at depth, these models
appear to work more like a treatment table than a decompression table. Other critics note that
bubbles appear before the supersaturation ratio is reached.
In recent years, many changes and modifications have evolved in the practical use of diving
tables. Some of the changes are shorter no-stop times, slower ascent rates and safety stops.
These modifications were discovered, if you will, through Doppler technology that detects both
3
CHAPTER 1
symptomatic and asymptomatic bubbles in the blood. Other reasons for these advancements are
dive computer development, bends statistics and a more conservative diving approach with the
community. All of these changes are supported on operational, theoretical and experimental
grounds by phase modeling, and in particular RGBM.
Similar schedules and procedures also evolved in Hawaii among diving fishermen, according to
Farm and Hayashi. Harvesting the oceans for food and profit, Hawaiian divers would make
between 8 and 12 dives a day to depths beyond 350 fsw (107 m). A typical dive series might
start with a dive to 220 fsw (67 m), followed by two dives to 120 fsw (37 m) and end with
three or four more dives to less than 60 fsw (18 m) – with little or no surface interval between
repetitive dives. These profiles clobber conventional tables, but when analyzed using bubble and
phase mechanics, these extreme profiles gain credibility.
Phase Mechanics
In the mid 1980’s, bubble models began to gain some acceptance within the diving community
largely due to the work by David Yount (Varying Permeability Model, VPM) and Tom Kunkle
(Surfactant Stabilized Model). Yet, while Yount’s work did begin to simplify the detailed
physics of the gas nuclei, it didn’t quantify the formation and stabilization mechanisms for bubble
seeds. An approach treating bubble nucleation, excitation and growth in tissue and blood is
termed phase mechanics, because it focuses on bubbles and their interactions with dissolved gas
in tissue and blood. It is with this approach that NAUI Technical Operations implemented the
NAUI RGBM tables for recreational and technical diving alike.
Bubble Seeds
Phase mechanics, as it pertains to diving, begins with the concept that body tissues store
persistent gas micronuclei over a time scale of minutes and hours. Micronuclei can be thought of
as "bubble seeds” and have been demonstrated experimentally in agar, salmon, and shrimp.
These "bubble seeds" are about one micron in size. By comparison, red blood cells only
measure three microns in size. While their origin is not fully understood, they are thought to be
caused from blood and tissue rubbing together (friction), gas moving in and out of the intestines,
exercise, mechanics of blood coursing through our circulatory system and even cosmic radiation
and charged particles.
4
CHAPTER 1
Micronuclei are stable when held at a fixed pressure, but can become unstable when exposed to
changes in pressure. They are classified into families according to size and the characteristics of
their surfactants, the film surface of activated molecules that coat the bubble and are both lipid
and aqueous. The composition of the surfactant affects the rate at which gas diffuses in and out
of the bubble. In general, the larger the micronuclei the more readily they will develop and grow
into bubbles.
The establishment and growth of bubbles and possible bubble trouble involve a number of
distinct yet overlapping steps, which include the following:
4. Bubble aggregation
5. Tissue damage and ischemia caused from both aggregation and growth of bubbles
As pressure decreases on ascent, the dissolved gas, which is now at a higher pressure than the
pressure within the bubble seed, begins to diffuse from tissues across the bubble boundary and
into the seed interior. This increases the internal bubble pressure and causes the bubble to grow.
RGBM protocols stage the diver at a permissible super saturation that has been fitted to
laboratory observations, diver data and maximum likelihood to risk. Unlike dissolved-gas
tables, RGBM permissible super saturation continually changes with the equations of state for
time, temperature and pressure, thus providing a better fit, or filling in some of the gaps.
RGBM
The very tenet of the RGBM is to maintain the diver at depth to both crush bubbles and squeeze
out inert gas via diffusion across the surfactant boundary. Since both the dissolved gas and the
free phase gas must be eliminated, staging becomes a playoff between these two goals. RGBM
determines a decompression rate that limits and tracks both the size as well as cumulative
volume of the bubbles during the ascent phase of the dive. Real equations of state determine the
rate of diffusion through the bubble film surface and small-scale changes in the radius of the gas
nuclei during compression-decompression, which is a major breakthrough in decompression
modeling.
RGBM is a dual phase approach to decompressing divers under wide array of conditions,
including multi-day, multi-level, repetitive, non-stop, altitude, decompression, mixed gas and
saturation diving. It assumes that during the compression phase of the dive, “bubble seeds” are
crushed to smaller sizes and stabilize at their new reduced size. During the decompression
5
CHAPTER 1
phase, a certain critical radius separates the bubbles that will grow from the bubbles that will
contract. It is during this stage of the dive that RGBM defines the fundamental difference
between free phase modeling (bubble mechanics) and dissolved gas modeling. RGBM gradients
for the elimination of bubbles increase with depth, directly opposite from the dissolved-phase
gradients that decrease with depth. Furthermore, RGBM minimizes bubble growth and
cumulative volume (phase volume) during decompression while reducing physiological insult and
overall decompression time, major reasons for its growing popularity.
Wienke extended the RGBM over other bubble models to include repetitive/multiday diving
with three gradient reduction factors applied to both bubble size and cumulative bubble volume.
The first factor reduces the allowable gradient by accounting for new bubble seeds generated
over a time scale of days. The second factor reduces the allowable gradient by allowing for the
birth of additional bubble seeds generated on reverse diving profiles. The third factor reduces
the allowable gradient by accounting for bubble growth during repetitive exposures on a time
scale of hours, with this gradient reduced with observable diffusion into bubbles during the first
two hours of fast tissue compartments.
While NAUI RGBM has changed the face of advanced diving protocols, at the recreational,
no-required-stop level few changes will be evident to the untrained eye. Nevertheless, RGBM
should reduce the effective risk of all levels of diving. To achieve this in the recreational diving
arena, RGBM requires mandatory safety stops, restricted deep dives with short surface
intervals and penalizes no-stop limits on reverse diving profiles (shallower dives followed by
deeper dives).
1. Los Alamos National Laboratory has used the RGBM (full up repetitive, deep-stop
version) for many years, logging more than 450 dives on mixed gas (trimix, heliox, nitrox)
without incidence of decompression illness. Thirty five percent (35%) of these dives were
decompression dives and twenty five percent (25%) were repetitive dives without
decompression with at least two hours surface intervals.
2. NAUI Technical Diving Operations personnel have been diving the full up, deep-stop
version since 1997, with some 1700 dives logged worldwide with a wide array of mixed
gases from nitrox through trimix. Diving depths have ranged from 60 fsw (18 m) to over
500 fsw (152 m) without incidence. These dives have ranged from warm tropical Caribbean
waters to the cold waters of northern Europe.
3. Modified RGBM recreational algorithms (Haldane imbedded with bubble reduction factors
limiting reverse dive profiles, repetitive and multiday diving) as coded into SUUNTO,
ABYSS, HYDROSPACE ENGINEERING, MARES, and PLEXUS dive computers
lower and already low incidence rate of approximately 1/10,000 or less.
6
CHAPTER 1
4. A cadre of divers and instructors in the mountains of New Mexico, Utah and Colorado
have been diving the modified (Haldane imbedded) RGBM altitude tables with an estimated
400 dives, without incidence. Again, not surprising since the altitude RGBM is slightly more
conservative than the usual cross correction used routinely to about 8,000 feet (2438 m).
5. Within the dive computer implementations of the RGBM, not a single DCI hit has been
reported in the multi diving category. As of this printing this encompasses several thousand
dives.
6. Extreme chamber tests to 300 fsw (91 m) and beyond for mixed gas RGBM are being run,
currently without incidence.
7. Recent experiments by Alf O. Brubakk of the University of Trondheim, Norway and Bruce
Wienke of Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico compared the effects of three
different decompression schedules on pigs. They tested the standard Haldanean U.S. Navy
model against two faster ascent rates congruent with the Reduced Gradient Bubble Model.
The researchers tested whether or not the RGBM type profile would give effectively deeper
decompression staging with a resulting reduction in bubble expansion and growth of
cumulative volume. The schedule that most closely resembled the RGBM model produced
significantly fewer bubbles than any other profile tested. See “The effect of in-water
decompression profile on bubble formation after dives with surface decompression,”
