the Cooperative Movement in ndia was formally introduced with the promulgation of Cooperative Societies Act in

1904.The National Cooperative Union of ndia (NCU), the apex organisation of the ndian Cooperative Movement
traced back its origin in 1929.
When All ndia Provincial Cooperative nstitutes Association came into being with Shri Lallubhai Samal Das Mehta as
its first President. Having been reorganised as ndian Cooperative Union, it was renamed later as All ndia
Cooperative Union in 1954 and re-christened as National Cooperative Union of ndia in 1961.
The Objectives
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
O Promote and develop the cooperative movement in ndia.
O To educate, guide and assist the people in their efforts to build up and expand the cooperative sector.
O To serve as an exponent of cooperative opinion in accordance with cooperative principles.
&CTIOS
In furtherance of these objects, the &nion undertakes the foIIowing functions :
i. Organise cooperative education and training programmes and popularise the principles and practices of
cooperation.
ii. Develop inter-cooperative relations and help the coordinated functioning of the cooperative movement in
various sectors.
iii. Organise, conduct, collaborate and assist in carrying out research, investigation of cooperative problems
and formulation of projects for cooperative development.
iv. Arrange for the production and publication of literature and audio-visual and other aids including films,
filmstrips on cooperation and allied subjects.
v. Give publicity to the achievements of cooperatives through periodicals, journals, newspapers, pamphlets,
brochures, books, films, broadcasts, T.V and the like for creating favourable atmosphere for the
development of the cooperative movement.
vi. Maintain an information bureau and a library.
vii. Express opinion on matters of cooperative Policy and act as the accredited representative of the ndian
Cooperative Movement in the national and international spheres.
viii. Convene and hold the National Cooperative Congress and cooperative seminars, meetings,
conferences, exhibitions etc
ix. Select delegates, representatives and observers on behalf of the Union for participation in the
international, national and state conferences.
x. Facilitate the promotion of cooperative institutions and assist the member societies in resolving their
problems and difficulties and formulation of programmes and their implementation while also preserve and
safeguard the democratic character of the cooperative movement in the country.
xi. to confer honour on the eminent co-operators.
xii. Acquire, hire, purchase, own or dispose off immovable property by way of sale, lease or otherwise for the
furtherance of objects of the Union.
xiii. Promote international cooperative relations through active collaboration with CA, UNO, FAO, LO,
UNDP, UNDO and other international agencies involved in cooperative development.
xiv. Establish effective liaison and relations with CA member-organisations and national cooperative
organisations of other countries.
xv. Help, promote international marketing on cooperative to cooperative basis by documenting necessary
information and to act as nodal agency for the benefit of ndian Cooperative Movement.
xvi. to provide consultancy services to the cooperatives.
xvii. to undertake such economic activities, directly or through strategically collaborative joint ventures or
partnerships with cooperatives and other organisations including insurance business as may be considered
necessary for consolidation of financial position of NCU or for furtherance of any or all of the above stated
objects.
xviii. to generally undertake such activities or functions as are considered incidental or conducive to the
attainment of the objects of the Union.

The General Body consists oI delegates oI member societies. The supreme authority oI NCUI vests with the General Body. The General body
progress oI the work programme oI the previous year and also decide the policy and programmes Ior the next year.

The General body elects the Governing committee once Ior a period oI Iive years. The Governing Council consists oI twenty one members el
including President, Vice Presidents, two members are also co-opted members. The ChieI Executive, NCUI is the ex-oIIicio member oI the G
Council meets once in every quarter and Iunctions through the Executive Committee and other Iunctional committees.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is a smaller body constituted out oI the members oI the Governing Council. It consists oI President, Vice President
Executive Committee is responsible to execute the decisions oI the Governing Council.
President
The President is the head oI the NCUI and is elected Irom amongst the members oI the Governing Council. He is supported by the ChieI Exe
various Iunctional divisions oI the NCUI secretariat.
Chief Executive
The ChieI Executive is the executive head oI the NCUI. He perIorms all the responsibilities as entrusted to him by the management and exerc
assigned to him under the Act, Rules, byelaws and also delegated to him by the Governing Council, Executive Committee and the President.




National Council for Cooperative Training has been constituted by the National Cooperative Union of ndia
under its bye-laws with the concurrence of Govt. of ndia, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture
and Cooperation. The Council is responsible for organising, directing, monitoring and evaluating the
arrangements for cooperative training for the personnel working in the cooperative sector in the country.
The main objective of the Council is to organise need based training programmes and facilitate the process
of human resource development for cooperatives for the country. t also envisages to conduct research in
critical areas of cooperative movement.

The Council has established its own training structure comprising of the VAMNCOM, Pune at National
Level, Five Regional nstitutes of Cooperative Management at Chandigarh, Bangalore, Kalyani,
Gandhinagar, Patna and 14 nstitutes of Cooperative Management located in different parts of the country.
