CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

Scientists, since long ago, have performed experiments on people if hearing music while doing something, such as studying or reading, gives a better effect or can help people do better in what theyre doing. Moreover, studies have also shown that children who listen or play classical music excel better in academics than those children who dont but this doesnt necessarily have to apply to all since being inclined to music can also be contributed by the genes of the parents (De Vera, 1997). Since it had worked on people, scientists then have studied and tried to find out if music also has an effect on plant growth. And after an experiment of exposing plants to music during the growing process done by a woman named Dorothy Retallack from Colorado Womens College in Denver, it was proven that music does have an effect on plants (1997). In this study, the researchers aimed to find a significant difference in the sprouting of a mongo plant when exposed to different genres of music specifically the pop, rock, classical, and jazz genre. In this case, the researchers chose the mongo plant (Vigna radiata Wilczek) since it grows quickly and the researchers can then gather the needed data immediately.

B. Statement of the Problem The researchers want to determine which genre of music has a significant effect to the sprouting of mongo plants exposed to selected songs of the said genres: classical, jazz, pop, and rock. Specifically, it seeks to answer the ff. questions: 1. What is the growth of the mongo plants exposed to classical music in terms of sprout height? 2. What is the growth of the mongo plants exposed to jazz music in terms of sprout height? 3. What is the growth of the mongo plants exposed to pop music in terms of sprout height? 4. What is the growth of the mongo plants exposed to rock music in terms of sprout height? 5. Compare significant difference between the control group results and the classical music results. 6. Compare significant difference between the control group results and the jazz music results. 7. Compare significant difference between the control group results and the pop music results. 8. Compare significant difference between the control group results and the rock results. 9. Is there a significant difference among the growth of monggo plants exposed to different genres of music in terms of sprout height?

C. Objectives

1. This study aims to determine if which genre of music will give a better sprouting height to a mongo plants sprouting by means of comparing the average lengths of the sprouts when exposed for a week to different genres of music. 2. This study aims to determine if there is no significant difference in the mean heights of mongo plants after being exposed to different genres of music in duration of one week. 3. This study aims to determine if a significant difference can be found in the mongo plants sprout height if exposed to any kind/genre of music.

D. Hypotheses - There is no significant difference in the sprouting growth of the mongo plant when exposed to different genres of music.

E. Significance of the Study If this study will be a success, the researchers study will be able to prove which genre of music gives a better effect to the sprouting growth of the mongo plants, specifically on the plants sprouting. It can also aid farmers and agriculturists in giving

4 better crops without using commercial fertilizer that can be toxic to the environment. Also, common people who are particularly interested in gardening can also benefit from the results of this study. Students who would want to do a further study with this plant as the experimental subject may refer to this study regarding the plants growth rate and characteristics. F. Scope and Limitations The researchers study will only be limited to the determination of the effect of the different genres of music on the sprout height of the mongo plant. The researchers will record all the heights of each specimen and get the average height of all the mongos sprouts. For each genre, a single specific song will be played. For the pop genre, the song Kiss Me thru The Phone by Soulja Boy will be played; for the classical genre, the song Fur Elise by Beethoven will be used; for the rock genre, the song New Divide by Linkin Park will be played; and for the jazz genre, the song Dream a Little Dream by Louis Armstrong will be used. Since the mongo plant grows in a short span of time, each song of the particular genre will be played for equal periods of time for each day that will go on for about a week, and another genre will be played the following week, and so on until the plants have been exposed to all the genres.

G. Definition of Terms Vigna radiata Wilczek (scientific name for mongo) Was used as test subject in the study; was tested to determine if the intensity of music has an effect on the growth of the mongo

5 plant. Classical genre The genre of the music Fur Elise and was included in the most common musical genre that was used in this study. Pop genre The genre of the song Kiss Me thru The Phone that was also used in the

researchers study. Jazz genre The genre of the song Dream a Little Dream that was also used in the researchers study. Rock genre The genre of the song New Divide that was also included in the researchers study. Sprouting height The basis of comparison for the researchers to distinguish which of the different genres of music was best for the plant growth of mongo plant.
