How to Use This Resource

The bone game is a traditional counting game played by Blackfoot children.

Originally, the game would have been played with carved bones from the ribs
of bison. It was used to help teach children to count.

Your students can make their own set of bones. Use this picture as a guide.
Bones can be made on craft sticks or tongue depressors (something that will
land up or down). Counting can be done in any language.

Markers tend to bleed on the wood, so we recommend using pencil or pencil

crayons. A light spray of clear acrylic can help protect them.

If a bone lands blank side up,
zero points are scored.

To play: Students will toss their set of bones onto the floor. They will count their
points. The next player will pick up the bones and toss them. Play continues until
one player reaches 20—the first player to reach 20 wins.

Who are the ninjas?

Our passion is making teaching easier. We all know it’s one of the most difficult (but heartfelt) jobs
in the world. Our years of experience in the classroom have shown us how much the role has
changed. We can’t write your report cards, go to staff meetings, or make that parent phone call,
but we can write engaging lesson plans that will foster a love of learning for your students while
saving your precious time.
