INTRODUCTION

The inception oI Emami Group took place way back in mid seventies when two
childhood Iriends, Mr. R.S. Agarwal and Mr. R.S. Goenka leIt their high proIile jobs
with the Birla Group to set up Kemco Chemicals, an Ayurvedic medicine and cosmetic
manuIacturing-unit-in-Kolkata-in-1974.

It was an extremely bold step in the early seventies when the Indian FMCG market was
still dominated by multinationals. Several such companies headquartered in Kolkata were
considering shiIting out oI West Bengal due to labor unrest and political problems.

But against all odds with a vision oI combining the age old wisdom oI Ayurveda with
modern manuIacturing techniques Ior creating winning brands the company was started
with-a-merger-amount-oI-Rs.-20,000.

A dream oI reaching out to the Indian middle class; a target audience whom they thought
will have increasing potential Ior consumption, the company started manuIacturing
cosmetic products as well as Ayurvedic medicines under the brand name oI Emami Irom
a-small-Iactory-in-Kolkata.

In the early days the two Iriends used to go around places and sell their cosmetics Irom
shop to shop. They piled their goods on hand pulled rickshaws and went on distribution
drives making their brand extremely popular, available and acceptable among consumers.

The Iirst-rate quality oI the products soon created a consumer pull and gradually some
people were hired to work Ior them. A chain oI distributors was established and the sale
oI Emami products spread Irom West Bengal to rest oI Eastern India and gradually to

other-states.
Emami Talcum, Emami Vanishing Cream and Emami Cold Cream were great Iavorite
brands with the quality conscious consumers in the mid-seventies. The company soon
became adept in selling beautiIul dreams to Indian women interested in Iinding their own
identity. The signature tune oI Emami played over radio and TV became a household
Iavorite.

In 1978, Himani Ltd (incorporated as a Private Limited Company in 1949) had become
sick unit and was up Ior sale. Himani, almost a 100 year old company with good brand
equity in Eastern India and a well laid out Iactory in Kolkata, was producing a number oI
cosmetics. Mr. Agarwal realized the opportunity and acquired Himani though Ior their
young organization it was a tough task to mobilize resources Ior buying a sick unit and
even tougher to turn it around to a proIitable venture. The degree oI Iinancial risk
involved was enormous considering the small capital base oI the company in those days.
However Mr. Agarwal, supported by Mr. Goenka decided to go ahead with the deal
which later on proved to be the turning point Ior the organization.

Mr. Agarwal decided to produce in the Himani Iactory diIIerent types oI health care
items and toiletries based on Ayurvedic preparation. Ten years aIter commencement oI
the company, it launched their Iirst Ilagship brand Boroplus Antiseptic Cream under the
Himani umbrella in 1984. Many additional brands Iollowed Boroplus including Boroplus
Prickly Heat Powder which came as a brand extension oI the mother brand. Emami
brands started selling in all states oI North, East and West India. Today Boroplus is not
only the largest selling Antiseptic Cream in India but also in Russia, Ukraine, and Nepal.

Nineties was very eventIul Ior Emami. The next Ilagship brand oI the company Navratna
Cool Oil came in the nineties under the Himani Umbrella and the second Iactory was
opened at Pondicherry to expand production. Navratna over the years has become

market-in-the-cool-oil-category.
The introduction oI new brands continued and the distribution network oI the company
was extended to South India with Navratna spear heading the process. In 1995, Kemco
Chemicals, the partnership Iirm was converted into a Public Limited Company under the
name and style oI Emami Ltd. In 1998, Emami Ltd was merged with Himani Ltd and its
name was changed to Emami Ltd as per Iresh certiIicate oI incorporation dated
September1,1998.

In 2000, with a view to concentrate on its core FMCG business, Emami's investment
undertaking was demerged and Pan Emami Cosmed Ltd. issued its Iully paid up shares to
shareholders oI Emami in the ratio oI 1:1. In 2003 a new Iactory unit was set up at
Amingaon, Guwahati. A Public Issue oI 50 lacs Equity Shares oI Rs2/- each at a price oI
Rs. 70 Iollowed in 2005. The issue was oversubscribed within Iew seconds oI its opening
with an overall over subscription oI 36 times oI the issue size. The share price sold at Rs.
70-today-is-quoted-in-the-stock-market-as-Rs.-210.

In 2005 Emami created a marketing history in India by launching Fair and Handsome,
the-Iirst-Iairness-cream-Ior-men.

In 2006 the company decided to introduce a Health Care Division and a number oI new
brands oI Ayurvedic OTC medicines. The company has taken up the challenge oI
growing this new division with a dedicated and enthusiastic team working on this project.

Among the brands created by the company, today Navratna brand is Rs.300 crore
Iollowed by Boroplus brand standing at Rs.250 crore and Fairness Iamily standing at
Rs.100 crore. Sona Chandi Chyawanprash, Menthoplus and Fast RelieI also among the
top-brands in-their-respective-categories.

In 2006, J B Marketing & Finance Ltd., the erstwhile marketing company oI the Emami
Group merged with Emami Ltd. and the total turnover oI Emami including sales in
domestic and export market stood at Rs 516 crores at the end oI the Iiscal year 2006-07.

Emami Limited with an investment oI Rs 700 crore has acquired major stake in Zandu
Pharmaceuticals Works Ltd on the basis oI huge business synergy between Zandu and
Emami. Post the acquisition oI Zandu Pharmaceuticals a century old household name in
India, some oI its prominent brands like Zandu Balm, Zandu Chyawanprash, Zandu Kesri
Jeevan, Zandu Pancharishta, Sudarshan and Nityam Churna are also under Emami`s
basket oI brands.
Within three decades, the company has grown into a huge Rs. 1000 crore Emami Ltd
under the Ilagship company oI the Rs.3000 crore Emami Group.

Today, Emami Limited is led by Mr. R S Agarwal and Mr. R S Goenka with the help oI
the second generation Promoter Directors Irom the two Iamilies. QualiIied and dedicated
set oI proIessionals run the day to day operations oI the company. Recently a new
corporate oIIice 'Emami Tower has been added to the history oI the company which
houses Emami Limited as well as all the other Group companies in Kolkata.

Recruitment and selection of EMAMI BIOTECH LIMITED,

HALDIA
People are a company`s most important assets. They can make or break the
Iortunes oI a business. In today`s highly competitive business environment
placing the right people in the right position is very critical Ior the success oI
any organization.
The recruitment and selection decision is oI prime importance as it is the
vehicle Ior obtaining the best possible person-to-job Iit that will, contribute
signiIicantly towards the Company's eIIectiveness. It is also becoming
increasingly important, as the Company evolves and changes, that new recruits
show a willingness to learn, adaptability and ability to work as part oI a team.
In this project report I have studied Recruitment and Selection process of
EMAMI BIOTECH LIMITED, HALDIA and attempted to provide some
ways so as to make recruitment more eIIective and to reduce the cost oI hiring
an employee.
My involvement in the project has been very challenging and has provided me
a platIorm to leverage my potential in the most constructive way.
During the internship period I have studied oI Recruitment & Selection
Process in EMAMI BIOTECH LIMITED, HALDIA.
.

In today`s rapidly changing business environment, organizations have to

respond quickly to requirements Ior people. The Financial market has been
witnessing growth which is maniIold Ior last Iew years. Many private players
have entered the economy thereby increasing the level oI competition. In the
competitive scenario it has become a challenge Ior each company to adopt
practices that would help the organization stand out in the market. The
competitiveness oI a company oI an organization is measured through the
quality oI products and services oIIered to customers that are unique Irom
others. Thus the best services oIIered to the consumers are result oI the genius
brains working behind them. Human Resource in this regard has become an
important Iunction in any organization. All practices oI marketing and Iinances
can be easily emulated but the capability, the skills and talent oI a person cannot
be emulated. Hence, it is important to have a well-deIined recruitment policy in
place, which can be executed eIIectively to get the best Iits Ior the vacant
positions. Selecting the wrong candidate or rejecting the right candidate could
turn out to be costly mistakes Ior the organization. ThereIore a recruitment
practice in an organization must be eIIective and eIIicient in attracting the best
manpower.

The company Iollows a recruitment process in general while appointing

candidates in the company. The recruitment process is explained in a Ilow chart
below:

Recruitment policy:

In today`s rapidly changing business environment, a well deIined
recruitment policy is necessary Ior organizations to respond to its human
resource requirements in time. ThereIore, it is important to have a clear and
concise recruitment policy in place, which can be executed eIIectively to
recruit the best talent pool Ior the selection oI the right candidate at the right
place quickly. Creating a suitable recruitment policy is the Iirst step in the
eIIicient hiring process. A clear and concise recruitment policy helps ensure
a-sound-recruitment-process.

It speciIies the objectives oI recruitment and provides a Iramework Ior
implementation oI recruitment programme. It may involve organizational
system to be developed Ior

Implementing recruitment programmes and procedures by Iilling up
vacancies-with-best-qualiIied-people.

COMPONENTS OF THE RECRUITMENT POLICY
O The general recruitment policies and terms oI the organisation
O Recruitment services oI consultants
O Recruitment oI temporary employees
O Unique recruitment situations
O The selection process
O The job descriptions

O The terms and conditions oI the employment

A recruitment policy oI an organisation should be such that:
O It should Iocus on recruiting the best potential people.
O To ensure that every applicant and employee is treated equally with
dignity and respect.
O Unbiased policy.
O To aid and encourage employees in realizing their Iull potential.
O Transparent, task oriented and merit based selection.
O Weightage during selection given to Iactors that suit organization
needs.
O Optimization oI manpower at the time oI selection process.
O DeIining the competent authority to approve each selection.
O Abides by relevant public policy and legislation on hiring and
employment relationship.
O Integrates employee needs with the organisational needs.

FACTORS AFFECTING RECRUITMENT POLICY

O Organizational objectives
O Personnel policies oI the organization and its competitors.
O Government policies on reservations.
O PreIerred sources oI recruitment.
O Need oI the organization.
O Recruitment costs and Iinancial implications.
RECENT TRENDS IN RECRUITMENT:
The Iollowing trends are being seen in recruitment:
OUTSOURCING:
In India, the HR processes are being outsourced Irom more than a decade
now. A company may draw required personnel Irom outsourcing Iirms. The
outsourcing Iirms help the organisation by the initial screening oI the
candidates according to the needs oI the organisation and creating a suitable
pool oI talent Ior the Iinal selection by the organisation. Outsourcing Iirms
develop their human resource pool by employing people Ior them and make
available personnel to various companies as per their needs. In turn, the
outsourcing Iirms or the intermediaries charge the organisations Ior their
services.

Advantages oI outsourcing are:

1. Company need not plan Ior human resources much in advance.
2. Value creation, operational Ilexibility and competitive advantage
3. turning the management's Iocus to strategic level processes oI HRM
4. Company is Iree Irom salary negotiations, weeding the unsuitable
resumes/candidates.
5. Company can save a lot oI its resources and time

POACHING/RAIDING:
'Buying talent (rather than developing it) is the latest mantra being
Iollowed by the organisations today. Poaching means employing a
competent and experienced person already working with another reputed
company in the same or diIIerent industry; the organisation might be a
competitor in the industry. A company can attract talent Irom another Iirm
by oIIering attractive pay packages and other terms and conditions, better
than the current employer oI the candidate. But it is seen as an unethical
practice and not openly talked about. Indian soItware and the retail sector are
the sectors Iacing the most severe brunt oI poaching today. It has become a
challenge Ior human resource managers to Iace and tackle poaching, as it
weakens the competitive strength oI the Iirm.
E-RECRUITMENT:
Many big organizations use Internet as a source oI recruitment. E-
Recruitment is the use oI technology to assist the recruitment process. They
advertise job vacancies through worldwide web. The job seekers send their

applications or curriculum vitae i.e. CV through e mail using the Internet.

Alternatively job seekers place their CV`s in worldwide web, which can be
drawn by prospective employees depending upon their requirements.

Advantages oI e-recruitment are:
O Low cost.
O No intermediaries
O Reduction in time Ior recruitment.
O Recruitment oI right type oI people.
O EIIiciency oI recruitment process.

Every organization has the option oI choosing the candidates Ior its
recruitment processes Irom two kinds oI sources: internal and external
sources. The sources within the organization itselI (like transIer oI
employees Irom one department to other, promotions) to Iill a position are
known as the internal sources oI recruitment. Recruitment candidates Irom
all the other sources (like outsourcing agencies etc.) are known as the
external sources oI recruitment.

Sources of recruitment

The HR manager oI the organization or top management oI the organization
usually does the Iinal interview which is the most important part oI recruitment
and selection process.

FINDINGS:
O Recruitment is done throughout the year more during the months
oI May-June and Oct-Nov;
O Huge investment oI time;
O Huge recruitment cost;
To pursue these, I would be going through the recruitment policies oI the
company. By active participation in the recruitment process, the areas where
improvement can be bought about are identiIied.

Conclusion:

Emami Biotech limited is a well equipped company which processes edible oils
oI diIIerent variants to suit the need oI customers and their sedentary liIestyle.
Equipped with European technologies the Iactory is supported with a whooping
production capacity oI 900 MT/day and is aiming Iurther at increasing the
capacity thus meeting the need oI the day.
The Iactory also aims at being energy eIIicient and eco Iriendly by reducing
emissions and treatment oI wastes produced by its EIIluent Treatment Plant.
The ETP is equipped to produce reutilizable waste water, a major advantage oI
the unit.
The biodiesel plant is another such example oI the eco Iriendly character oI the
Iactory. Very Iew industries are equipped with this unit and hence Emami

LEARNING EXPERIENCE:
My internship at Emami biotech ltd, Haldia has given me the practical exposure
in areas oI Recruitment and related areas and has provided me ample
opportunities to know the structure, process and policies used in the areas oI
recruitment oI the employees.
This experience includes eIIective communication skills, selI conIidence,
proIessionalism, time management and corporate ethics.
O Knowledge about recruitment process oI the company.
