RESEARCH ABSTRACT

Ever since the advancement of technology, it has become an

integral part of people’s everyday routine. This routine includes several

activities that can be done with the help of technology, including

watching news or movies via television or gadgets, seeking

information, and communicating online. Technology has also

revolutionized the commerce industry in such a way that it has become

possible for many people around the world to buy and sell products

online. Relative to this, the involvement of delivery companies made it

possible for sellers to effectively deliver their products to their buyers.

As a matter of course, it is the delivery riders who are in charge of

handling and delivering packages and who encounter difficulties and

challenges in their job. Hence, the researchers aim to explore and

understand the lived experiences and challenges of parcel delivery

riders in Sta. Lucia, Quezon City, using phenomenology as their

research design. To gather the qualitative data, the researchers

interviewed five (5) parcel delivery riders in person using a structured

Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

questionnaire that contains six (6) open-ended questions. The

transcribed data from the interview was carefully arranged and

analyzed to be shown in this paper. The following themes were

derived: Victims of Fake Booking, Problems with Customer Behavior,

and They Are Their Own Bosses. The researchers would suggest the

government focus on developing and implementing policies such as

verification processes in online shopping apps, customer service

programs, support systems, and safe riding programs to cater to the

concerns of parcel delivery riders.

Keywords: E-commerce, Delivery Riders

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

The advancement of technology has made it possible for humans

to do things with just one click. On this day, people heavily rely on

technology, as it makes their ways of living much easier and more

convenient. One of the most significant advantages of technology is

the boost in efficiency. Tasks that once took hours are now completed

in mere minutes (Asaram, 2023). This notable change can be seen in

every aspect of our lives, including education, social life, and

entertainment. With the help of the internet, people are now able to

look for information instantly without having to go to libraries. People

are now able to connect with one another, even from afar, through

internet communication. It is also technology that gives us a valuable

Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

viewing experience, such as watching a movie or show on television or

mobile gadgets.

Above all, technology played a pivotal role in improving the

commerce industry — the way people buy and sell goods. Before the

innovation of technology in the commerce industry, people could only

buy their basic necessities through on-site visits to supermarkets and

groceries. This is where e-commerce comes in—a product of

technology that offers a more convenient way of shopping that allows

people to buy and sell goods over the internet (Bloomenthal, 2024).

This new way of shopping became possible through the use of online

shopping apps that provide their users with a hassle-free and

convenient online shopping experience. The entire experience of online

shopping lies with the delivery riders. Without the aid of delivery

riders, online shopping will not be a success since every purchase

made online requires delivery. Hence, delivery riders play a crucial role

in the e-commerce industry, as they ensure that orders are delivered

to customers in good condition and in a timely manner.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Courier services, also known as express delivery services, are

responsible for transporting goods and packages from one place to

another. Their main goal is to ensure that these items are delivered to

customers quickly and securely. The courier industry has been

operating for centuries and has evolved significantly with

advancements in transportation and technology (Akhai, 2023). One

notable change in the delivery method of the courier industry is the

shift from using horses to trucks and motorcycles to transport goods

and packages. Back in 1860, in the United States, they established a

system called Pony Express, wherein couriers rode on horses and

carried mail and packages across the western part of the country. On

this day, trucks and motorcycles are greatly used by courier services in

every country, particularly the Philippines. In this country, there are

some courier services that use trucks and motorcycles as their means
Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

of transporting packages, some of which are Lalamove, LBC Express,

Grab Express, and J&T Express.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to identify and understand the experiences and

challenges faced by Shopee Delivery Riders in Sta. Lucia, Quezon City.

Furthermore, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What challenges do delivery riders face everyday?

2. What implications can be derived from the experiences of

delivery riders?

3. What recommendations can be made based on the implications

of such experience?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

INTRODUCTION

Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

(Insert text here. Write in “Justify” format. Cite at least three. One

must be local.)

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

(Zulkifly, 2023) states that the freelance deliverers face numerous

safety and health hazards when performing deliveries as they are

mostly working outdoors, specifically on the road. Previous research

indicates that the frequency of motor vehicle accidents was positively

correlated with work stress, health risk, and burnout as reported by

food and parcel delivery riders. In Malaysia, road accidents are still a

major problem, particularly for motorcyclists. This includes the food

and package carriers who have to work under strict deadlines to meet

client expectations, which can subsequently cause them to engage in

unsafe riding or driving practices.

According to (Evangelista et al, 2023), when more women are

accepted into a new industry, the quantity of employment available to

them rises. Employment opportunities for women can help modernize

traditional culture in a country like the Philippines, where gender

Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

norms prioritize males as the primary breadwinners. There’s no telling

where an accident can happen as the female delivery riders risk their

health on the highways. They are vulnerable to traffic accidents,

including those caused by other drivers in addition to inadvertent

riders. The experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of

delivery riders are examined in this study. The Realist, the

Accommodated, the Vulnerable, and the Determined are further motifs

that emerge. The participant’s difficulties and experiences were

highlighted by these themes.

(Salleh et al, 2023) states that the main issue of delivery riders is

their inconsistent income, which could have a bad effect on their

finances. The commission is paid at the time of delivery. Since the

corporation does not employ them, there is no job security in this

case. Benefits and protections like paid time off and health insurance

are not available to them. Riders may be forced to work strange hours

or lengthy shifts in order to meet consumer requests. Riders and their

families may face financial instability as a result of a lack of

employment security and benefits. Food riders are also at risk of road

accidents, theft, and being blamed for delays. Additionally, riders are
Sta. Lucia Senior High School
Practical Research 1 (PR1)

generally employed on an informal basis and accept a high level of risk

as part of their employment. Delivery riders engage in informal

employment and must be paid based on the number of goods they

deliver. In a less developed country in Africa, the delivery rider is

perceived as a means of alleviating poverty and unemployment among

the population with low levels of education and socioeconomic status.

These individuals have been reported to be the most likely to engage

in a poor safety culture that poses a greater risk to them and

influences their motivation to continue working in the occupation. In

addition, most delivery riders are young road users who need formal

training in riding. There needs to be a higher awareness of the risks of

using roads.
