BACKGROUND OF STUDY

A soundtrack can be recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, book, television program or video game, a commercially released soundtrack album of music as featured in the soundtrack of a film or TV show, or the physical area of a film that contains the synchronized recorded sound. In movie industry terminology usage, soundtrack is a contraction of "sound track" and is an audio recording created or used in film production or post-production. Initially the dialogue, sound effects, and music in a film each has its own separate track (dialogue track, sound effects track, and music track), and these are mixed together to make what is called the composite track, which is heard in the film. A dubbing track is often later created when films are dubbed into another language. This is also known as an M & E track (music and effects) containing all sound elements minus dialogue which is then supplied by the foreign distributor in the native language of its territory. The contraction soundtrack came into public consciousness with the advent of so-called "soundtrack albums" in the early 1950s. First conceived by movie companies as a promotional gimmick for new films, these commercially available recordings were labeled and advertised as "music from the original motion picture soundtrack." This phrase was soon shortened to just "original motion picture soundtrack." More accurately, such recordings are made from a film's music track, because they usually consist of the isolated music from a film, not the composite soundtrack with dialogue and sound effects. The term soundtrack now most commonly refers to the music used in a movie or television show, and to an album sold containing that music. Sometimes, the music has been recorded just for the film or album. Often, but not always, and depending on the type of movie, the soundtrack album will contain portions of the score, music composed for dramatic effect as the movie's plot occurs. The abbreviation OST is often used to describe the musical soundtrack on a recorded medium, such as CD, and it stands for Original Soundtrack (OST), however, it is sometimes also used to differentiate the original music heard and recorded versus a rerecording or cover of the music.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The movie industry in Malaysia has reached greater heights as of late, as more and more Malaysian movies achieved box-office success. Some of these movies have also been shown outside of Malaysia, reaching the foreign market and attracting audience outside of Malaysia. To promote the movie, one of the strategies that were used by the movie production company is to use the OST of their respective movies and playing it through local radio networks. Although the OST might sometimes seem different compared to the content of its associated movie, the movie producers would still try to promote it as long as the targeted audience are hooked to the OST and eventually have the desire to watch the movie at the cinema or through services such as Astro First. There is also a trend within the movie industry whereby the movie production companies also have their own recording studios to record their own OST and utilizing in-house talents to do it. One of these companies is KRU Studios, which recently promotes the OST entitled Kerek from their movie, Karak: Laluan Pusaka. KRU Studios also produced the epic movie entitled Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, which had an OST that was sung by Anuar Zain. The title of the OST is Sedetik Lebih. But, does this OST influence the success of the movie itself which has raked in nearly RM 6.5 million at the box-office? If that so, how does the OST influence the success of that particular movie? As a result, what is the importance of movies OST on towards the people and the movie industry as a whole?

SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY

Through this particular study on the effects of original soundtracks to audience, we hope that it will widen the perspective of human towards original soundtracks. It may sound unimportant but eventually people will look at this issue in a more serious manner once this study is completed. This is because this issue involves the movie industry that entertains us in our daily life. As we know, entertainment is one of therapy that helps us to release our daily pressure. Learning more from this issue is another significant gain that we can have from this study. Understanding the importance of original soundtrack to movie industry is vital because it will help audience to recall what movies are related to the original soundtrack. This is important so that we will be more prepared when it happened to someone we know. Also, through this study, we hope that audience will clear about the importance of original soundtrack towards the film and also the all of the crew of production. The original soundtrack helps the production to promote their film. If there is no promotion of the film, there is no acceptance from the audience. Hopefully, once the audience exposed to the effects of original soundtrack, they will exposed on the difficulties of the production to promote their film.

SCOPE OF STUDY

This particular study also faces several scopes that might dampen the chance of getting a more accurate result from this study. The scope of this study are allocated time, in terms of people that we observe and location. The time allocated for this study is fairly short, which is in about a months time. This will limit us in terms of getting a more precise data in a longer period. We have to make do with the allocated time to take as much data as we can. If the allocated time is much longer, we can take this study into newer depths and perhaps get more accurate data. Another scope of this study is location. For this study, we conduct our research in UiTM Malacca. With various types of methodology to be applied in this study, this might affect the accuracy and the amount of data that we able to collect. The people that we observe also one of the scope to this particular study. This research is being conducted among students in DMC110 1J in UiTM Malacca. This particular factor could have some impact towards the data that has been collected.

LITERATURE REVIEW

According to the book Mass Media in a Changing World- History, Industry, Controversy, most music are promoted by radio. This is because radio is a free medium for people to listen to music compared to the CD they have to spend some money to buy it. This shows that most people like to have a free things and at the same time, music industry take a change to promote new musics through radio. According to Utusan Malaysia, in the music industry, every composeres and singers compete among themselves to make a new songs and try their best to bring up the song so that people will be familiar and like the song. According to the journal entitle Important of music in viewing films,Despite continued acknowledgment of the importance of music in viewing films, empirical studies investigating the interaction of music with film are conspicuously absent. Evidence from a few isolated cognitive studies suggests that the relationship between music and film is additive. Little is known, however, about the physiology of emotional response to viewing film music stimuli. The present study utilized both self report as well as physiological indices to investigate the nature of the film and music relationship. Results indicate a fairly straight-forward, additive relationship in terms of emotion self report. The modulating role of music on physiological reactions to film, however, was more complex. This study corroborates previous evidence regarding the subjective experience of viewing images with music. Physiological evidence, however, suggests that the interactions between music and film not always are predictable. The scientific examination of the physiological correlates of human emotional response dates back to the later nineteenth century, with the work ofDarwin ( 1872/1969; Lewis & Haviiand-Jones, 2000). Since that time, many words have been written in an attempt to define what an emotion is-with varying degrees of success. Two general methods of classifying emotional response, however, have earned particular recognition: the categorical and dimensional approaches. The categorical or discrete emotions approach (e.g., Izard, 1977) posits the existence of several "fundamental" emotions (e.g., happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust) that can function

either independently or as members of an interrelated group (Neumann & Waldstein, 2001 ). A major criticism ofthis approach, however, is the lack ofan agreed-upon set number ofthese fundamental emotions (S loboda & J us Hn, 2001 ). In various literations of the theory, this number ranges anywhere from seven through more than a dozen (Izard, 1993). Dimensional models of emotion date back over a century (Russell, 1997). Significant recent iterations include those by Russell ( 1980), Russell & Feldman-Barrett ( 1999), and Lang ( 1995). The dimensional model posits that every emolion can be expressed as a function of(usually) two "core" dimensions, frequently referred to as valence ana arousal. Valence is described in terms of a range of response from positive (happiness, pleasure) to negative (sadness, displeasure). Arousal ranges from low (indicating calmness, peacefulness) to high (excitement, energy).

METHODOLOGY

For this particular study on the effects on original soundtracks, two types of methodology have been chosen. The methodologies are interview and observation. Through these methodologies, we hope we can collect the necessary data needed for the analyzing stage of this study.

Library Research In our research, we use, articles from Utusan Malaysia, journals Robert Simons, and text book which is Mass Media in Changing World that provided by library to complete our assignment. Observation Observation is also another methodologies that we use to form this research. We observe the content of OST lyric of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa which is Sedetik, Lebih .We also observe relevancy of the lyric towards the storyline of the film. Survey questionnaires In survey questionnaires, we will ask peoples in our survey targets about Hikayat Merong Mahawangwa OST. There will be 10 questions and they must

answer it depends on their opinions. This will be achieving by distributing about 10 set of questionnaires to the MC1101 J students.

4.0 RESULT

Library research According to Mass Media in a Changing World History, Industry, Controversy book, the soundtrack of the film has been one of the medium to promote the film itself. Usually the OST of the film will come out before the film shown at the cinema. When the song become familiar to the listener, automatically they will attract to watch the film. Observation As we state in our methodology,we observe the content of OST lyric of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa which is Sedetik, Lebih and the relevancy of the lyric towards the storyline of the film.In our observation on the content of the lyric,we observe that it is only relate with one part of the scene in the film, which is when Merong leave his lover,Embok for a war at Langkasuka.Embok feels sad when Merong want to leave her. This shows that the content of the lyric does not relevant with the storyline of the film. Survey questionnaires As for the survey questionnaires, we distributed 10 set of questionnaires to the student of DMC110 1J.The questionnaires was answered by 5 male students and 5 females students. The average of the age is between 18-19.Below are our questionnaires and its results.

3. As for me,yes. This is because, the OST of the Hikayat Merong Mahwangsa have two version, which is Malay and English language,in order to promote this film.

4.2

DISCUSSION

In our research,we found that the OST of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa called Sedetik Lebih, that sung by Anuar Zain have less influence the succes of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa film. This is because the OST are not the main reason that contribute to the popularity of the film.By refering to our result in the questionnaires ,question number six, half of the students say that they are attracted to watch the film after they listen to the OST, while half more say that the OST do not attracted them to watch the movie. Other than that, we also found that there have many ways that the OST has done to influence success of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa film. Based on the result of questionnaires for question number four, 5 out of 10 from our respondent choose the radio as the medium where they listen to the OST, 2 of them choose the film itself as the medium, while the rest listen the OST from the internet. This shows that the radio channel is the most and better medium to advertise a movie through its OST as people more likely to listen to music from radio. People love to listen to music and as we know OST is one type of a music. As for movie and music industry, the OST is one of the way to promote the popularity of its movie and music.Movie industry rely on music industry as it will help movie industy to achieve the popularity.Without OST,a film will achieved less popularity and that is why, nowadays every film have their own OST.

5.1

RECOMMENDATION

For the further studies, we recommend other people to conduct research impact of the OST towards the successful of a film by using other than action ephic film. We also recommend other people to conduct a research about the presence of obsence lyric in music.Apart from that,we suggest people to conduct research about illegal downloading of music.Last but not least, people should conduct a research on why people in Malaysia tend to listen songs from other country than Malaysian songs itself.

5.2

CONCLUSION

As for the result,we conclude that OST also have its own role towards a film, although it is not the main role for the promotion of a film. OST only play a small role for the popularity of a film, but it doesnt mean that OST is not vital for a film. This is because, the OST will help people to recall upon a film. For an example, if we mention about Sedetik Lebih, people will recall for Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa film as people know that it is the OST of the film. We also conclude that most people expose to listen to OST from radio compared through the film itself. In this case, the genre of the OST doesnt match to the genre of the film as the OST is in romantic genre, while the film is in action-packed genre. This prove that the OST only give less impact towards the popularity of the film.
