GRIP Cont'dfrom Page 1 community Monterey pine seedlings native to Cambria that have been selectedto resist Pitch Canker. "Greenspace has spent years working with the world's leading experts to develop a plan that will replace the dead and dying trees in our forest with Monterey pines that exhibit resistanceto Pitch '.We 'let Canker," Hawley said. can't wait to say the planting begin'." GRIP's first stepis to identify 100 Monterey pine treesthat appear asymptomaticto Pitch Canker in heavily infected areasof the forest. Thesetreeswill be inoculatedwith Pitch Cankerand their coneswill be collected. Volunteers from the community will de-seedthe cones and plant 3,000 seedsin containers. These first seeds will be grown into seedlingsin greenhouse conditionsunder the supervisionbiologist and GreenspaceDirector Jim Brownell. When the seedlingsare approximately eight months old, they will be inoculated with Pitch Canker. A few months later, they will be inoculateda second timo. Those seedlingsthat survive the dual inoculationprocess will be deemedviablefor planting. As onegroup ^ of seedlrngsmaturesand is distributed, a new group will be planted, 1! providing for an ongoing volunteer replanting effort.
GRIP volunteerswill replantthe forest with seedlings that will be able to grow to maturity. Since the seedsare gathered locally, the plantingswill alsomaintaintheuniquegeneticdiversityof Cambria's native Monterey pine stand, Hawley observed.
