Problem:

• Technology is an add-
on to the school
which is quickly
becoming
indispensable, there
is no one person
steering the
Technology Ship

Our Budget
• The school does not have a unified technology
department so requests are granted or denied
without set policies.

Our Staff
• There is no unifying
force between our
web page, our server
administration, our
support personnel,
our computer and
graphics teachers,
our entire faculty, and
our administration

1
Our Resources
• There is no continuity
between departments,
administrators,
business people, and
curriculum
– If one of our support
people leaves or retires,
it would be a major
setback for obtaining
state and federal
funding for technology

Our Curriculum
• Technology is currently piecemeal and implemented unequally
– There is no unity between professional development, curriculum, and
support services.

Did you know . . .

• It is recommended
that 1/3 of a school’s
technology budget
should be for
professional
development?

2
Plan

• We need someone to keep our Technology Ship

on course.

The Dean of Technology

• A Dean could coordinate programs, professional
development, purchases

The Dean of Technology

• A Dean could seek out grants, and aid in the
training of faculty and staff as it relates to cross-
curriculum needs. A dean could be the help we
most need to teach with technology. (Chen,
2008)

3
The Dean of Technology
• A Dean could be a strong voice for our faculty to
those who hold the purse strings. (Massy, 1991)

Did you know . . .

• Some public and
private schools have
already created
Deans of Technology
in order to eliminate
waste, and ensure
curriculum-based
progress in the area
of technology?

Asked and Answered

• Don’t we have too
many deans as it is?
– The laws, ethical
guidelines, and
available technology
are growing faster
than our school. To be
in charge of all the
things that our current
Director does AND
relate to curriculum is
a lot. (Hopkins, 2002)

4
Asked and Answered
• Is this just a waste of
money on more
administration?
– We are wasting money
by having a lack of
coordination. There is
Dean of Technology
so much out there that
would be “neat” to
have, but having an
expert would be in a
better position to
spend the tech budget
wisely. (Massy, 1991)

Asked and Answered

• I don’t use technology
in the classroom, why
should I care?
– The Dean of Teaching
is there to critique and
assist your teaching
methods; the Dean of
Technology can do the
same in terms of
Technology.

Asked and Answered

• Ok, who should be the 1st Dean of Technology?

– Someone who has experience seeking and applying
new methods and machines in the classroom.
– Someone who has a history of assisting fellow faculty
– Someone who is experienced in budgeting
