MEASUREMENT
❖ Physics is an experimental science which tries to
describe everyday phenomena. One important aspect of
experiments is Measurement.
❖ Measurement is a comparison of an unknown quantity,
called the measurand, with a known amount of the same
quantity, called the standard, using a measuring tool.
❖ Unit is a unique name we assign to measures of physical
quantity, e.g., meter for the quantity “length”.

❖ Rules of Significant Figures
✔ All nonzero digits are significant.
✔ Zeroes in a whole number are not significant; unless a
bar is put over it.
✔ Zeroes to the right of a decimal point are significant if
there is a significant figure to the left of the decimal
point.
✔ In a decimal number, zeroes after a significant figure are
always significant.
