Composites involve combinations of two or more materials from the previous four categories. The first five categories comprise the structural materials. Semiconductors comprise a separate category of electronic materials that is distinguished by its unique, intermediate electrical conductivity. Choose two (2) of the engineering materials given and deseribe TWO (2) of their important properties to use in manufacturing i. Polymer Metal iii, Ceramic Compo: (4 marks) Chemical analysis in materials science laboratories is frequently done by means of the scanning electron microscope. An electron beam generates characteristic. x- rays that can be used to identify chemical elements. This instrument samples a roughly cylindrical volume at the surface of a solid material. Calculate the number of atoms sampled in J-jam-diameter by J-um-deep cylinder in the surface of solid copper (density of copper = 8.93g/cm’, atomic mass of cooper = 63.55 g/mol, Avogadro’s number of Cu = 6.02 x 10” atoms/mol) (4marks) i. Explain what is meant by efectron valence and why itis important in chemical bonding process. (2 marks) ii, Write the electron configuration for Titanium (Z=22) and Bromine (2=35) by using spdf notation. Electronegativity value for : Ti=15,0= 35, 2n= 1.6,Te =21 (4 marks) With aid of diagram, illustrate covalent bonding process between two oxygen atoms. Given the atomic number for oxygen is 8. Your answer should include electron configuration in spdf notation, State the type of multiple bonding formed. (3 Marks) Most engineering materials used by engineers are crystalline. Common to all crystalline materials are the fundamentals of crystal geometry. Each of the thousands of crystal structures found in natural and synthetic materials which is can be placed within few crystal systems and Bravais lattices. Define the following terms: i. crystal structure. crystal systems. iii, Bravais lattices. (marks) ‘There are a few basic rules for describing geometry in and around a unit cell. These rules and associated notations, such as crystallographic directions, planes and their indices are used uniformly by crystallographers, materials scientists and others who must deal with crystalline materials. How are the indices for a crystallographic direction in a cubic unit cell determined? ii, State the indices of the direction that results from the intersection of the pair of planes within a cubic crystal: (010) and (001) planes. iii, Determine the Miller indices of the crystallographic plane in a cubic unit ccell that intersects the following coordinates: (1,0,0); (1,1,1/4) and (01,0).
