The material developed will enable the student to able to present in different environments, focusing mainly on presenting in a formal environment.
Session one Introduction:
Presentation is the practice of showing and explaining the content of a topic to an audience or learner. Presentations come in nearly as many forms as there are life situations. In the business world, there are sales presentations, informational and motivational presentations, first encounters, interviews, briefings, status reports, image-building, and of course, the inevitable training sessions. Although individuals most often think of presentations in a business meeting context, there are countless occasions when that is not the case. For example, a Non Profit Organization presents the need for a capital fund-raising campaign to benefit the victims of a recent tragedy; a school district superintendent presents a program to parents about the introduction of foreign-language instruction in the elementary schools; an artist demonstrates decorative painting techniques to a group of interior designers; a horticulturist shows garden club members or homeowners how they might use native plants in the suburban landscape; a police officer addresses a neighborhood association about initiating a safety program. Presentations can also be categorized as vocational and a vocational. In addition, they are expository or persuasive. And they can be written, or memorizes. When looking at presentations in the broadest terms, it's more important to focus on their purpose. There are two basic purposes for giving oral presentations: 1. To inform 2. To persuade
Activity1: Introduce yourself in front of the whole class. Tell them about your
educational background, hobbies, your ongoing activities, interests. Also speak of some situations and environments in which presentations are given. Speak for 3-4 minutes.
Activity2: Review your own introduction; write down things that you lack necessary for
a presentation e.g. sentence making, your speaking style etc. Discuss with the whole class the things you feel are important for a presentation.
Assignment: Prepare a 5min presentation on a topic of your choice on PowerPoint for
the next class.
Session Two
Effective Presentation Skills:
1. Research your material Collect and read as much information as possible. Make some notes and also look at the validity of the information you are collecting. Make sure it is not outdated and is relevant to the actual subject. Take notes and highlight potential key points for your presentation. 2. Review your notes once you have gathered enough information review your notes and select the information you will present. Look at the key ideas that support the purpose of your talk. Decide how deep you will go when presenting. Always keep the type of audience in your mind, it could vary in ages, educational background, their employment etc. 3. Organize your key ideas Start with the key points you will make and add two to three ideas and elements to it. When you will present you will be taking your audience from a starting point to an ending point, keep you material in an order and in sync with the information you provide. 4. Decide how you will present information decide what sort of visual aids you will use e.g. videos, sounds, pictures, slideshows etc. Remember that your presentation will be more interesting with the use of visual aids. But dont solely rely on visuals you should also use more effective communicating skills. 5. Organize the material for your presentation Review your presentation. Make a scene of the time of presentation in your mind. This will help you to better organize your ideas in an order. Try to find weak points in your presentation, work on them.
Activity 1: Discuss these points with a partner; share anything you think is important
with the teacher and the class.
Assignment: Prepare a 4 minute presentation on a topic of your choice keeping in view
the points discussed. Your presentation should include visual aids such as videos and pictures. TIP: the general layout of the presentation starts with an introduction; tell the audience your name the topic you will be presenting on, then start the presentation and end with a thank you note.
