WORKPLACE SATISFACTION REPORT Mitchells Stores

1.

Executive summary Introduction

Resume of everything
2.

Human Resources Department developed a questionnaire and distributed to get the eleven items answered by each of the 247 employees. The items are focused in three different major themes which, together, may give the whole piece of employees workplace satisfaction in Mitchells Stores:

Bonds with Mitchell Remuneration, perspective of promotion and ability to the job Relationships in workplace and hygiene factor

3.

Findings

78% of the workers said they would leave Mitchell for better remuneration. 85% of the employees works for a promotion most of them are Salesperson, which commented that they work hard for being hired with contract as Cashiers (they have no contract as Salesmen). 68% of the employees find they are well-paid, but less than 50% agreed with payment criteria (46%). 57% help colleagues when it is necessary, but this percentage is compound mostly by Sales Supervisors and Store Managers. Salesmen are very clear in justifying their noncollaboration with the commission, which is individually accounted. 62% of the employees find a good workplace inspired by colleagues good mood. It was mentioned though that Salesmen in bad mood very often insult costumers, whom leaves stores unsatisfied with the treatment. 83% like their activities and only 26% of total think their skills are underused. There were no major complaints about Hygiene Factor so that 98% of the participants said the work environment is clean.
4.

Conclusion

Promotion opportunities and raising salary possibilities are determinant factors to define the satisfaction level of Mitchells employees with their work ambiance. It was found that for most of Mitchells employees it is more important to be well-paid than to work in this company. Although Mitchell is well-known as a reliable retailer where best professionals chose to work, being hired by Mitchell is question of proud only for highlypositioned employees (most of them Store Managers). Salesmen and mainly Sales Supervisors/Cashier have no bonds with the company/brand. Making some money is their goal. Despite of not having job security (no contracts), Salesmen are satisfied with their remuneration since it only depends of how hard is their work they are paid per hour and, in addition, they can receive commission on sales (but complaints were written about how difficult it is to reach the goals). On the other side, the stores loses part of their potential on managing because

Store Managers, which mostly have other business experience and may have some acknowledgement, feel unmotivated to work harder and increase profit because there would be no additional gains like profit shares and no perspective of promotion. Because of everything that has been said, Mitchells workers are mostly unhappy with their workplace. The dissatisfaction levels may not have interfered with the profit, but as it affects the way Salesmen deal with customers, it is about to change the way clients sees the brand.

Recommendations

The most important thing Mitchell should do to enhance employees workplace satisfaction is changing their payment criteria. Paying a percentage of sales for Salespersons (commission) is a motivating factor but is also a bad circumstance for workplace satisfaction, as it increases the competition and decreases the collaborative attitudes between co-workers. It was also noticed that Store Managers are well-educated and so that they could lead some workshops for their subordinates. It would help improving service and would make Managers feel more useful to and involved with the company.
