DOING BUSINESS

IN THE CLOUD
GETTING STARTED
The potential of cloud computing is enormous. It promises a step-
change in how you think about the services that underpin your
business: paying only for what you use; passing investment, risk
and management headaches to a service provider; being able to
scale at the flick of a switch; enjoying unprecedented levels of
agility, collaboration and productivity. But there are pitfalls to
avoid in order to realise the full business benefits.
WHAT IS IT?
There are a plethora of cloud-based
services on offer: some mature (think of
cloud-based backup storage) and others
not; some designed from the ground up
as enterprise solutions, others evolved
from consumer services. If you migrate
to cloud computing services, you need to
understand all of these factors to avoid
introducing new sources of complexity
and risk to your organisation.
This means that you can't afford to view
cloud computing as purely an IT project.
If you focus on IT architectures and appli-
cations, rather than on how these support
business processes and your organisa-
tion's strategic objectives, you're unlikely
to achieve the full benefits or mitigate the
potential risks.
Our three-week cloud adoption assess-
ment will give you a head start in
understanding the complexity of the cloud
computing ecosystem.
We'll help you assess the suitability of your
business processes for delivery through
an appropriate cloud-based model. We'll
help you decode the options: all the 'as
a service' possibilities infrastructure,
platform, software, process and the
different types of cloud: private, public,
hybrid and so on.
Finally, we'll give you a roadmap to help
you prioritise your cloud migration and
transformation activities.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Businesses revolve around processes,
so thats where we start. This approach
ensures that both business and IT leaders
are engaged and our assessment is
based not just on technical feasibility or
a single factor, such as cost, but includes
all the issues that are important to your
organisation.
We appreciate that every business is
different. So we consider your strategic
objectives, the way you're organised, your
regulatory constraints, and your
key differentiators.
Another advantage of our process-
focused approach is that it provides a
clear scope for your assessment. Most
organisations rely on a small number
of core processes. These will include
common processes, such as order-to-
cash or procurement-to-payment, and
industry- and company-specific ones. You
may have a good idea of the processes
you want to consider; if not, we'll advise
you based on our experience with
organisations like yours.
We score each process to identify its
suitability for transfer to a cloud delivery
model, taking into account the IT serv-
ices and security frameworks that apply
to it, and the contractual and regulatory
constraints within which it operates. We
identify any barriers to migration arising
from your existing IT setup or the way
your organisation works.
As well as scoring the top-level process,
we drill down to its component processes
and assess these to make sure that they
fit with the top-level assessment. If not,
we'll advise you of changes you can make
to align the component process or it may
need to be 'extracted' as a separate target
process with its own suitability score.
WHAT DO I GET?
Suitability scorecard
The suitability scorecard gives you much
more than a yes/no assessment of whether
the process is suitable for migration to a
cloud-based model. It tells you the ideal
level at which you should be looking for
a cloud-based alternative: process as a
service, software as a service, platform as
a service or infrastructure as a service.
Cloud adoption roadmap
The roadmap identifies the processes
that will deliver the most benefit to
your organisation if delivered through
an appropriate cloud model. As well as
prioritising your processes for you, we
use our extensive knowledge of the matu-
rity of different types of cloud service,
our continuing assessment of all the key

WHY CSC?
Unlike other companies, well only ever send in senior transformation consultants
to perform your adoption assessment. They will work with you to define the scope
of your assessment, perform the assessment, produce the reports and be there to
answer your questions.
