The Laser beam you can see with your eyes

A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation) through a process called stimulated emission. The term laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Laser light is usually spatially coherent, which means that the light either is emitted in a narrow, low-divergence beam, or can be converted into one with the help of optical components such as lenses.

The color green is the most perceptible color to the human eye. Green lasers now appear as ultra bright light sources when compared to other colors of equal power. As an example a 5 mw green laser will appear many times brighter than a 5 mw red laser. A 5 mw green laser beam (ray) will be visible in low light where a red laser is only visible as the impact point on the target. A great advantage is that you get this brightness without exceeding the 5 mw Class3A compliance regulation as required by the FDA. This can also explain why portable green laser pointers are much more popular among laser lovers all over the world.

Standard classification for lasers

Any laser system that has a power output of greater than 5 milliwatts MUST be registered with the FDA and Center for Devices and Radiological Health if it has an exposed beam, such as for entertainment (I.E. Laser light shows) or for medical use (such as surgery) where someone other than the operator may come in contact with it. (this is called a 'varience' and I have filled them out and submitted them and they ARE a royal pain in the backside !)

Classification of Power Output for all Lasers

Class I laser product
No known biological hazard. The light is shielded from any possible viewing by a person and the laser system is interlocked to prevent the laser from being on when exposed. (large laser printers such as the DEC LPS-40 has a 10mW HeNe driving it which is a Class IIIB laser, but the printer is interlocked so as to prevent any contact with the exposed laser beam, hence the device produces no known biological hazard, even though the actual laser is Class IIIB. This would also apply to CD players and small laser printers, as they are Class I devices).

Class II laser products

Power up to 1 milliwatt. These lasers are not considered an optically dangerous device as the eye reflex will prevent any ocular damage. (I.E. when the eye is hit with a bright light, the eye lid will automatically blink or the person will turn their head so as to remove the bright light. This is called the reflex action or time. Class II lasers won't cause eye damage in this time period. Still, one wouldn't want to look at it for an extended period of time.) Caution labels

CLASS IIIA Power output between 1 milliwatt and 5 milliwatt. These lasers can produce spot blindness under the right conditions and other possible eye injuries. Products that have a Class IIIa laser should have a laser emission indicator to tell when the laser is in operation. They should also have a Danger label and output aperature label attatched to the laser and/or equipment. A key operated power switch SHOULD be used to prevent unauthorized use. No known skin hazard of fire hazard exist.

Emits a power level of between 1 and <5 milliwatts (.005 watt). This may seem minuscule but when contained in a narrow beam can be very optically impressive being able to illuminate an object over several miles under dry clear conditions. Observer visibility can be limited by the curvature of the earth!! These lasers operate from a push button and require labelling as shown.

Laser pointers fall into this category.

CLASS IIIB Laser systems emit a power level of between >5 and <500 milliwatts (.5 watt). This power level can produce some real neat optical effects and is often used for star pointing. The ray of the laser is usually quite visible dependent on power level and color. Output powers over 50 milliwatts can burn objects and human flesh.

CLASS IV Laser systems emit a power level of between >500 milliwatts (.5 watt) and upwards. These power levels can burn, cut and fabricate most materials including metals. These higher powered laser systems are the candidates for directed energy beam weapons. Class4 lasers require a key switch functioning as remote control access port, time delay and an aperture shutter. These can and will cause eye damage. The Class IV range can and will cause materials to burn on contact as well as skin and clothing to burn. These laser systems MUST have: A key lockout switch to prevent unauthorized use Inter-locks to prevent the system from being used with the protective covers off Emission indicators to show that the laser is in use Mechanical shutters to block the beam Red DANGER labels and aperature labels affixed to the laser. The reflected beam should be considered as dangerous as the primary beam.

1. Astronomical laser
With a brilliant beam stretching for miles into the night sky, high power green and red laser pointers are excellent tools for astronomy. Easy and quick identification and pin pointing stars and other celestial bodies. No need for difficulties, frustration or wasted time pointing with your finger or trying to explain. A laser pointer can be used to identify and pinpoint any object in just a few seconds.

High power portable lasers can also be mounted on telescopes as a visual indicator of where the telescope is pointing. Portable laser is also ideal for mounting on GOTO mounts/telescopes to help direct other people with telescopes and binoculars to an object. With no duty cycle, an on/off switch and very durable construction, a portable laser can be both conveniently and easily mounted on almost any make of telescope and used by hand. Red light is scattered less by the atmosphere than green light because red light has a longer wavelength making green lasers more visible and suitable for astronomy. The light from green lasers also has the advantage of being the wavelength that our eyes are most sensitive to. Most cheap low powered laser pointers are not effective to be used in astronomy. The beam from these lasers is too weak and easily obscured by ambient light, smog and fog. The beams from high power laser pointers will easily be visible at night in the worst of conditions with the higher powered models even being visible during the day. Perfect for dawn and dusk astronomy.

2. SINGLE/TWINBEAM TARGET LASER

Whilst standard lasers are of a defined wavelength and setting, the Single/TwinBeam laser meets the increasing demands on target lasers to be of full usage whatever the conditions require. The two inserts can be selected from a range of basic laser sources. Each insert can be independently adjusted in the X and Y axes, making the TwinBeam laser a truly unique tool for rapid deployment forces and special police units. TwinBeam lasers can be fitted with any two of the following laser inserts: Red visible beam Infrared invisible beam Infrared invisible beam expanded (for night illumination)

3. Laser Photography
There are many laser photography essentials you can find and refer to online. Lasers are visually stunning and are used to create very impressive and dynamic photographs. When a camera is used on extended exposure, a high power laser pointer can be used to draw, make pictures and create marvelous visual effects.Thats why these handheld laser pointers are so popular with filmmakers. The proliferation of laser photographs online is a testament to the popularity of lasers and photography.

For taking basic and intermediate high quality laser photos, the most important item of equipment is a laser. Laser modules that can be used continuously and are hands free are ideal and portable lasers such as laser pointers are also good. The power of the laser is not important and any power level over 1 to 2mW will be enough. The color of the laser is also not important and mainly a matter of personal preference. Blue lasers are popular for their beautiful beams. Lasers and photography is not just limited to lasers pointers and hobbyists. Specialist lasers with short powerful pulses make high speed photography with exposure time of several trillionth of a second possible.

4. Aiming devices
As a sports person out for some target practice or a soldier on the battlefield, high power laser pointers can help you improve your aim and accuracy. With a range well in excess of 10 miles at night, laser pointers will give you the ability to line up any target in visual range. Even in broad daylight, the green laser dot will be a visible aiming point that can greatly improve accuracy.

5. Laser dazzlerNon lethal deterrent

A dazzler is a type of a directed-energy weapon employing intense visible light, usually generated by a laser (laser dazzler). It is a non-lethal weapon intended to cause temporary blindness or disorientation. The first reported use of laser dazzlers in combat was by the British, during the Falklands War of 1982, when they were fitted to various Royal Navy warships in order to hinder low-level Argentinian air attacks. Blinding weapons are banned by 1995 United Nations Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons. Dazzlers are not intended to cause permanent blindness, therefore are thought to be able to skirt this regulation.

6. Laser pointers for Construction/Alignment

Laser pointers can also be found in construction work as an aid to laying pipe, in building construction for leveling purposes, and in security and police services as an aiming device for firearms. On construction and building sites, high power laser pointers and portable lasers are ideal for engineers and site mangers to point out details and features. The laser beam dot is clearly visible in all conditions allowing the quick and efficient identification of features on a site. Effectively saving money through the reduction of wasted time and minimizing errors.

Laser pointers are also used for aligning objects over long distances. High power laser pointers are commonly used by both road construction crews and ground keepers at major sporting venues, worldwide.

7. Scare birds with an avian dispersal

Farmers, airport ground controllers, pet owners and naturalists all use portable lasers as a non lethal method of avian dispersal. Lasers have been instrumental in the reduction of bird strike rates and in effective avian predator management for a number of protected bird species.

Both laser pointers and portable lasers are used by farmers from various countries to supplement their avian dispersal programs. By using our lasers, farmers have been able greatly reduce their cost (rifle or ammunition costs) with zero impact on wildlife and still adhere to local laws for wildlife protection.

8. Laser shows & entertainment

No rave or dance venue now is complete without a laser show. The same can be said for any major outdoor event with the Asian games, Commonwealth games, Afro-Asian games and Olympic Games being classic examples. Both high power laser pointers and portable lasers can also be used with basic optics to create similar light shows on a smaller scale. The shows you can do with lasers range in complexity from a simple star diffraction grating to a more elaborate set ups with galvanometers and diachronic mirrors.

9. Medical lasers
Lasers in medicine have a wide range of applications range from vision correction and surgery to wound cauterization and the acceleration of soft tissue healing. In brief, the lasers used in are divided into two categories, high power green lasers (3000mW to 10000mW) and low power red and infrared lasers (1mW to 500mW).

High powered lasers are used to cut through tissue and seal/cauterize wounds where as low level lasers are used to treat injuries and promote healing. Though not designed medical use and not to be used without medical approval, high power laser pointers and portable lasers and infrared laser pointers do in both theory and practice have medical applications.

10. Laser Experiments

Lasers can provide you with hours of fun conducting experiments that provide insights into light, optics, electronics, energy and lots more. Much more beneficial and enjoyable a boring class room or stale text book. Experiments can range in complexity from some as simple as popping a balloon (heat conduction and reflectivity) to as complicated as bending light (wave propagation).

11. Camping/Hiking
Laser pointers and portable lasers are great aids for camping and hiking. There is nothing worse than being stuck out in the middle of the bush during the wind and rain and with wet matches and not being able to light a fire. High powered lasers are great for lighting fires. Lasers with a beam that is visible for miles can also be used to signal for help in the event that you are lost or need aid. Lasers can also provide adequate illumination at night that unlike a normal torch will not ruin your night vision. High power laser pointer are so light and small, you can hike with them in your pockets and not even notice the weight. The larger laser portable lasers weigh the same as a small flashlight and can easily fit in your back pack. It's also strong enough to survive the heaviest pounding and roughest trail.
