Conflict Management
On 16th of March we had a speaker series by Mr. Vijay Kumar. He shared an immense knowledge and experience to us about managing the conflicts in our day to day life. We are just graduates and we have no experience about corporate world. He has made the ignorant (students) into knowledgeable by telling all the conditions faced by managers and also employees in the industries. This is a wonderful experience for us, especially as a student, as we have never faced such environment before. So this has really helped us in knowing what is actually happening in the real world scenario. The speaker stated that, by handling conflicts one can find a change in their performance and can mold themselves from good to great. At first conflict is to have a disagreement or a contradiction with the other person. On the other hand conflict management is resolving the issues which we face in our day to day life.

The main conflicts which we face in our regular life are because of: y Communication ruptures y Misunderstandings y Rumors y Complaints grievances y Disputes y Employee/ customer relationship problems y Agitation/ negotiation/litigation/arbitration

In order to move from good position to great position we need to manage all the above conflicts so that we can live, lead, succeed and sustain the success. One of the main causes for a conflict is when we over estimate our self and under estimate others. So, we have to follow one rule that is Dont over estimate about you and under estimate others.

If we want to manage the conflicts we have to manage the following: o Emotions Anger Anxiety Allergy o Attitude o Change o Relations o Stress o Reactions

The speaker has told a story named empty boat. This is a wonderful story that every person must know. It tells us how to manage our anger. Zen Masters, Lin Chi was meditating and got disturbed when a boat hit his boat. He was frustrated by this and got anger. When he wanted to express his anger he came to know that it was an empty boat. As there was no way left with him, he cooled down and managed his anger. This is a really great story which tells us how to manage anger. This is very useful for every person and in every moment of life. Attitude: For a person to be successful in life, he just needs to follow his heart and should not get distracted by the comments like the Deaf frog. So, here in this story The tiny frog stood out from the whole group of frog only because it was deaf and it did not give up until it reached the top of the tower. Strong determination and self-belief helped this frog to win the race, whereas the other frogs had no belief on them and they got distracted by the comments of the other frogs and they finally gave up. There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: its you.

90-10 rule: o 10% of life is made up of what happens to us and 90% of it is how we react. o No can really control the 10% of the life it just happens while the rest of the 90% is determined by our behavior and our reactions. It is not what happens to you, it is how you handle what happens, makes the difference when we face conflict in our regular life. Decision Making plays a vital role in managing the conflicts o Three types of decision makers are: Analyzer Synthesizers Valuers o Techniques of decision making: Brain storming generating the idea. Nominal grouping technique evaluating idea. Delphi technique - Use experts to make predictions & forecasts.

Methods of conflict management: o Withdrawing o Smoothing o Compromise o Forcing o Problem solving Negotiation Collective bargaining

 Conciliation Arbitration Adjudication

Mr. Vijay Kumar has clarified our doubts very patiently and merged our brains with the concepts of handling conflicts. He clearly stated how to face difficult situations as an employee and as a manager.
