Introduction:

Newton’s Second Law of Motion is one of the foundational principles in classical

mechanics. Formulated by Sir Isaac Newton, the law establishes a direct relationship between the
force acting on an object, its mass, and the resulting acceleration. Mathematically expressed as F
= ma the equation conveys that the force applied to a body is the product of its mass and its
acceleration (Space Center Houston, 2022). This simple yet powerful relationship allows us to
predict how objects will move under various forces, whether they are large celestial bodies or
small everyday objects.

Historically, Newton's second law helped to revolutionize our understanding of motion by

providing a quantitative way to analyze how forces cause changes in velocity. Prior to Newton,
much of the understanding of motion was based on Aristotle's theories, which did not account for
inertia and the effects of forces on objects. Newton's formulation showed that an unbalanced
force acting on a body causes it to accelerate in the direction of the force, a concept that
underpins modern physics (Britannica, 2024).

In practical terms, this law is applicable in various fields, including engineering, space
exploration, and even sports. For instance, when designing a vehicle, engineers calculate the
force needed to move it at a certain acceleration, considering the vehicle's mass. Similarly,
astronauts aboard spacecraft use this principle to maneuver in the vacuum of space, where
gravitational forces are minimal (Space Center Houston, 2024).

One of the key insights from Newton's second law is its capacity to explain why heavier
objects require more force to accelerate at the same rate as lighter ones. This is why pushing a
car requires significantly more effort than pushing a bicycle. It also underlies the idea that when
no net force is acting on an object, it will either remain at rest or continue moving at a constant
velocity, as described by Newton's first law of motion.

In our project, we will demonstrate Newton’s second law of motion by setting up two
balloon rocket with one of these is being wrapped by coins and let them accelerates. After the
demonstration, we will observe who accelerates faster. This will provide a clear visual
confirmation of the law in action, allowing us to determine connect theoretical principles with
real-world outcomes.

Objective:

To design and create a simple demonstration of law of acceleration. This project aims to
provide an engaging, hands-on experience in understanding Newton’s 2 nd Law of motion. By
creating this simple balloon, individuals will gain an understanding of the law of accceleration
while enjoying the fun and satisfaction of building that model.
