Dr. Nicholas J. Carino retired from the U. S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2004, after 25 years of service as a research structural engineer. At NIST, his research involved in-place testing of concrete for strength, nondestructive methods for flaw detection in construction materials, and high-performance concrete. He conducted fundamental research on the maturity method and the pullout test method. He conducted breakthrough research on the use of stress-wave propagation to locate defects within hardened concrete. In 1986, he was awarded the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Wason Medal for Materials Research for a paper describing the initial research that subsequently led to the development with co-workers of the impact-echo method. He was awarded the same medal a second time in 1991 for research with Dr. Mary Sansalone on the application of the impact-echo method for detecting delaminations. In 1994, he was awarded a third Wason Medal for a paper with Dr. R. C. Tank on the maturity method. His exceptional contributions to research and standards development were recognized by ACI and he was the recipient of the Robert E. Philleo Award in 2004 and the Arthur R. Anderson Award in 2008. In 2011, Dr. Carino was named an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute. He continues to be active on many technical committees. He served as the Chair of the ACI committee on nondestructive testing (NDT) of concrete and was instrumental in the development of committee's reports. He is currently a member of the construction subcommittee of the ACI Building Code Committee and is a member of the ACI Specifications Committee. He served on the ACI Board of Direction and the ACI Technical Activities Committee. Dr. Carino is also a Fellow of ASTM International, and served as Chair of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. In 2002, he received the ASTM Award of Merit for his leadership, service, and outstanding contributions to Committee C09. In 2004, he received the Robert J. Painter Memorial Award from the Standards Engineering Society and ASTM for his service to standards development. In 2006, he received the Frank E. Richart Award for contributions in research and standards development. In 2009, he received two additional ASTM awards: the Katharine and Bryant Mather Award for outstanding service in performing administrative and managerial duties leading to enhanced standards and concrete technology; and the Walter C. Voss Award for distinguished contributions in the field of building technology. Dr. Carino is recognized worldwide as an effective communicator on concrete technology and nondestructive test methods.
