Module: Contemporary Management Issues by Barry Simmons Code: BAM3011 The aims of the module are:

To evaluate a range of management theories and their impact on contemporary organisational settings. To critically appraise and explore interactions between different management standpoints. To develop a critical awareness of new management initiatives Indicative Syllabus Content 1. Current management writers, eg. Porter, Drucker, Kotler, Deming. 2. The demographic challenges arising from an ageing workforce. 3. Business ethics and transnational organisations. 4. The challenges arising from cultural diversity: multiculturalism and cultural empathy . 5. Globalisation and regionalisation : complements or competitors? 6. International, political, legal, technological and social challenges facing managers, eg. the need to maintain competitive advantage, the importance of assuring quality, NGOs, the emergence of new markets, equality in the workplace, diversity, maintaining the security and integrity of organisational knowledge. 7. Corporate governance: self-regulation or legislation? 8. Corporations and responding to the demands of social responsibility : from the principal-agent relationship to stakeholding . The future of market capitalism. 9. Exploring the inter-relationships between the topics 1 to 8 noted above in order to help students appreciate the increasingly complex challenges facing managers today. Learning, Teaching and Assessment

This outcome will be assessed by an assignment and an end of module open book exam. The articulation of the learners ideas, and their interpretation within class discussions and seminars relating both to established theory and relevant contemporary issues will provide the learner with the time and opportunity to reflect and internalise these skills. Both assessments will permit the construction of carefully considered and detailed arguments, well founded in both established works, recent journal articles and a full range of relevant, contemporary practical examples from appropriate fields.
