2. Read the source below and answer the questions to follow.

Source A

The source below is about reasons for VOC permanent settlement at the Cape in 1652

Commander Jan Van Riebeeck was requested by Dutch East India Company to
undertake the command to establish a refreshment station at the Cape, as a stopping
place for ships (voyage) between Europe and Asia. The purpose of the settlement was
to provide the VOC (Dutch name for DEIC) ships with water and fresh food supplies.
The Cape settlement was also a place where sailors who had scurvy could rest and
recover as deaths on route were very high. The Dutch settlers built a fort to protect and
shelter themselves known as Castle of Good Hope and build hospital for sick VOC
sailors.

Source D

The source below is taken from a Platinum Social Sciences book written by P Ranby et
al. It shows the life of slave and how they resistant slavery

The main cause of slave resistance was that they were not treated as humans. Slaves
were treated harshly. They were taken from their homes, separated from their families,
kept chained or locked up, and given new names. Slaves were forced to live with other
slaves who spoke different languages because they came from different part of the
world. Cruel, inhuman treatment and bad working conditions sometimes had effect of
making slaves resist by stealing, damaging, or burning an owner’s property, but they
were terrible punishment for any acts of resistance if the slaves were found out.
Running away was probably the main form of resistance at the Cape in the 17th and 18th
centuries. If slaves managed to run away, there were many places to run to. They could
not go home, as home was too far away. Slaves sometimes joined other slaves who
lived in groups in the mountains around Cape Town. Some slaves joined Khoikhoi
groups who had moved away from the Cape.

3.4. Using the source and your own knowledge, write a paragraph of about EIGHT lines
explaining how slaves resisted the life of slavery (6)
