LAB EXPERIMENT N°1
Diode characteristics
The purpose of this experiment is to determine the characteristics of a diode using two ways:
1. Direct measurement of voltage and current
2. Display on the oscilloscope (X-Y plot)
Part 1:
The diode characteristic will be determined by direct measurement of voltage and current.
1. Test the diode and give its reference
2. Connect the following circuit.
R=1K
Vs V
3. Set the voltage source Vs to 0 Volts and the current limiter on your power supply at
25% of full current.
4. For each value of the voltage source Vs (0, 0.1, 0.2, ….0.9,1, 2….5V), measure the
voltage across the diode (VD) and the current ID. (you can determine the current using
the voltage across the Resistor R: ID= VR/R).
5. Plot your results ID=f(VD) in a graph.
6. Determine from the graph the knee voltage and the internal resistance.
7. Reverse the diode connection (or the voltage source), set V=5V. Measure the current
in the reverse direction. What do you remark?
Part 2:
The diode Transfer function will be displayed directly on the scope.
1. Calibrate the waveform generator for an 8V p-p , 1kHz triangular wave, and connect
the circuit shown below. Set both channels to DC (with 1Volt/Division scale). Set the
scope into X-Y mode.
2. Obtain I-V curve of the diode and draw it by scale.
3. Discus your results.
Channel 1:X
8VP-P
Channel 2:Y
