QUARTER 4 – MODULE 4
WRITING A POSITION PAPER
LESSON 1: Writing a Position Paper
ACTIVITY 1 | Rearrangement
1. DEPRESSION
2. CYBERBULLYING
3. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
4. TEENAGE PREGNANCY
5. SAME SEX MARRIAGE
ACTIVITY 2 | Analysis
1. Technology has a lot of benefits to us but it still has a number of
negative effects on human lives and on the society.
2. I agree with the writer’s claim that in spite of technology has changed
and improved our lives, we can’t deny the fact that we are negatively
getting immersed by it and it continues to diminish our self-
development
3. The first argument of the writer is about jotting down the most often
ignored harmful effects by the society who's constantly getting dazzled
by technology’s innovative features.
4. As a conclusion, the writer let us know his awareness about the effects
and nature of technology, and call us for action through persuading us
to use technology wisely.
5. I contend that technology brings danger to our self-development,
especially the improvement of our personality and skill, although it
upgrades and innovates everything around us for the betterment of
the society.
ACTIVITY 3 | Reflection
1. What I Know About the Lesson
Position paper is like an argumentative essay. It persuades the readers
about supporting the writer’s chosen side in the argument and call the
readers to do something to support the writer’s claim
2. What I Can Say About the Lesson
It is brief yet it gave enough information to let us know the features of
a position paper and how to do it properly. Through giving some pre-
and post-activities, accurate definitions and procedures, relative
examples, and real-life applications, I understand the topic way better
than searching for it online.
3. What I Found Out After Reading the Lesson
I found out that position paper and argumentative essay are not 100%
percent alike as the position paper tend to be more formal yet still
persuasive. Also, I learned the special features of the position paper
(background, overview about the opposing side, counterarguments,
arguments, and call for action), and also the procedure on properly
writing a good position paper about some talk of the town topics.
ACTIVITY 4 | Stating Your Claims
I contend that same-sex marriage should be allowed in our country as
a big step to welcome and fully embrace the existence of LGBTQI+
community.
ACTIVITY 5 | Pointing Your Reasons
Main Reasons/Evidence
Idea/Claim
I strongly believe It destroys the lives of the teenager parents as they
that the are most likely to drop out of school then turn their
increasing rates backs from their dream of better future to face the
of teenage harsh realities of parenthood at an early age
pregnancy Adolescent mothers are at risk in post-partum,
should end for depression, malnutrition and other medical and
the sake of our psychological conditions since their mental,
society and for emotional and physical states are not ready for early
the future motherhood
generations. Based on statistics, children of teenage pregnancy,
not only are likely to have medical conditions such as
premature birth, but they also experience a bad
childhood and tend to follow the path their parents
walked at
The negative impacts of teenage pregnancy ripple
up to an economic level as it affects the rate of
unemployment. Teenage parents didn’t finish their
school and thus, they have a hard time finding a
good job so they stay at under minimum wage jobs
or just stick around their parents
ACTIVITY 6 | Knowing Your Stand
Soc Med is Underrated
It is widely known that one can’t live, mostly teenagers, without
scrolling through one social media app in a day. That’s how engaging and
sensational the social media was. It only aims to give access to information
back then but today, it was literally a need for younger generations and most
adults. Social media creates a virtual world that brings all people together
around the globe and aids us in every aspect we can possibly think. Still,
parents and educators tend to overlook the benefits of social media and just
focus on its bad sides. FOMO, addiction, self-absorption, cyberbullying, and
suicide that social media is not actually the culprit. If we can only dive deeper
to this talk-of-the-town issue, we can see that the social media itself is not
the problem; the people are.
Social media paves us the way to grow in different dimensions of
wellness; either mentally, socially, emotionally or spiritually. It lets us
discover sources of valuable information and learning through YouTube,
Pinterest, Tumblr, Quora and Goodreads. It finds us new friends and
communities; network with other people who share similar interests or
ambitions via Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram, Wattpad, Vimeo, and
Skype. It is an outlet for our creativity, technological savvy and self-
expression, and it spreads awareness and moral values such as faith and
equality. Just like what Karen Gross said, an author and educator, social
media helps provide a sense of community. It overcomes barriers of distance
and time so that people can connect with the world whenever they want.
Through social media, every voice can be heard and no one will feel alone.
Especially with this current pandemic we are facing, social media enables us
to seek for motivation, unity and emotional support. According to statistics,
social media platforms improve health-related factors such as self-identity
and self-confidence, and it also helps most teenagers to vent their pent-up
emotions. Through these, we can see the positive opportunities we can get
from social media that may surpass the bad effects of it.
Social media is a medium for people to socialize with one another but
it can never replace the face-to-face interaction and real-world relationships.
However, it doesn’t mean that it only has harmful effects in our lives.
Remember that as social media change the way we socialize, it will still all
boil down to us on how we can be mindful and disciplined users. Instead of
focusing solely on the negative impact social media can have, try to highlight
the ways we can use social media for good. It will be in our hands if we will
keep underrating the fact that social media offer us greater convenience and
connectivity that no one will ever refuse to have.
LESSON 2: Defining a Stand on an Issue
WHAT’S NEW
Social Media
I strongly believe that social media is beneficial to students’ academic
performance though one should set a limit on using it
Smoking
Smoking will never be a good way to relieve one’s stress and anxiety
Legalization of Divorce
I think divorce should not be allowed in our country because the
essence of marriage is at stake
Bullying
Bullying is not the proper way to vent one’s pent-up emotions
Giving of Homeworks to Students
Giving of Homeworks to students is fine but it must be only in
weekdays because weekend is not included on school time
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
1. What I Know About the Lesson
Taking a side or position of the argument is essential in writing a
position paper
2. What I Can Say About the Lesson
Brief yet informative knowledge was given and I am good with that.
The definitions, tips and examples are also relevant, current and
useful.
3. What I Found Out After Reading the Lesson
Choosing an argument/issue and position/claim to defend takes a lot of
analysis and decision-making since they have particular characteristics
to meet, and evidences are extremely important in writing a position
paper since it will be the foundation of your claim.
