TURN DOWN THE RADIO

1 The governor of the state of Maryland signed a new law yesterday. The new law makes it illegal to play loud music in your car. The law says that if the music can be heard from a distance of 50 meters away, it is too loud. So, starting today, it could cost you a lot of money to turn the volume up too high on your radio in Maryland. 2 People who break the law must pay a $50 fine. They will also have to appear in court. This could be very inconvenient for some people. For example, if you live in Allegheny but play your car radio too loud in Ocean City, you will have to return to Ocean City to appear in court and pay your fine in person. Some people think that is ridiculous. 3 A local judge said, To me, it makes no sense to force people to appear in court for something like this. What is more serious playing your car radio too loud or reckless driving? he asked. 4 5 We already have laws against disturbing the peace, the judge continued. I think those This new law doesnt put the priorities in the right place. If you get a ticket for laws are probably enough to cover this problem. speeding, you can just mail in the payment. You do not need to appear in court. But if you play your car radio too loud, you have to come to court to pay the fine. According to the judge, it does not make sense. 6 There is going to be a problem if police officers give a lot of people tickets for playing loud music in their cars. It will waste a lot of court time that should be spent on more important things, said the judge. 7 8 John Morley is an officer in the Cumberland Police Department. Morley said all of the We enforce all laws and we will certainly be strict about enforcing this new car radio police officers have a copy of the law. They will do their best to enforce it. law, said Morley. When you have the radio turned up that loud, its not safe. Its a distraction because you cant hear emergency vehicles, honking horns, or other cars, according to Morley. Its a real problem at the beach resorts where you can hear music screaming from car radios. Tourists are looking for peace and quiet. They complain that the loud music from car radios is annoying. 9 This is a good law, said Morley. It will create safer roads and ultimately save lives.
