Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a medical disorder affecting several areas of the brain
which results in disruptive behavior, irregular loss of working memory and reduced organizational abilities.
There is no single cause for (ADHD); however, heredity (passing it from parents to children), is the most
common cause. This has been confirmed in studies looking at the rates that ADHD appears within families.
Other risk factors for ADHD have to do with factors that can influence brain development and functioning
such as exposure to toxic substances e.g. exhaust pollution from cars, and brain injury due to trauma or
disease. Factors such as diet, television viewing and parenting have not been proven to be causes of ADHD.

attention deficit disorder. Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent, 29, 526-533.

Text 2
It is likely that many factors play a role in each case of ADHD. One such factor is brain damage which
makes ADHD sufferers feel “different”. For example, when brain damage causes a disconnect between two
parts of the brain, some parts of the brain do not receive alerts to pay attention to visual or sound messages.
That is why ADHD victims, in this case, can feel isolated. Hence, they can have difficulty making friends
and find it harder to maintain friendships. In addition, children with ADHD are often emotionally
immature. Their classmates are often more developed than them emotionally, making it hard for children
with ADHD to relate and connect with children their own age. Some research has shown that children with
ADHD, especially those that have emotional outbursts or have aggressive tendencies, have trouble getting
along with their peers.

Although children with ADHD often struggle in school, ADHD is not connected with intelligence. ADHD is
not a learning disability; however, it can cause difficulties in learning. Some studies have indicated that as
many as 50% of children with ADHD may also have a learning disability. Disorganization, forgetfulness and
losing items are also major problems for students with ADHD. Keeping track of projects, remembering
homework assignments and tests are all frequent complaints of students with ADHD. In addition, ADHD,
can cause students to miss details when a teacher is speaking, when homework assignments are given or
when other students are talking.

Text 4
Many children with ADHD are at risk of academic underachievement despite having average or above
average intelligence. This is because ADHD sufferers process information more slowly than their peers and
have significant problems with memory. Studies in Canada and the United States of America show that
childhood ADHD results in lower achievement scores in reading and mathematics (8 to 10 % lower) which in
turn often leads to repetition of classes, not finishing high school and generally poor performance in
adulthood.
Robert Tannock. (2007). The educational implications of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Text 5
The exact cause of ADHD is unknown but most evidence points to genetic factors, environmental factors and
brain damage. It is reported that, at least, one-third of all fathers or mothers who had ADHD in their youth
have children with ADHD. However, it is important that parents should not blame themselves for their
child’s disorder. Recent studies have also found a connection between ADHD and environmental factors. In
2010, Canadian researchers reported a link between air pollution and ADHD. In addition, children with
ADHD may have certain parts of the brain that are smaller or less active than they are in children who don't
have ADHD. Children who suffer from ADHD may act without thinking, may be over active and may have
trouble focusing. Of course, all children act this way at times but ADHD children have symptoms for a
longer period of time and it weakens a child’s ability to function socially, academically, and at home.
