STAAD PRO An Overview

Use of Computer in Structu ral Designing of Buildings In e ar lier period s sa y in s ixt ies, engineering calculat io ns were do ne b y slide ru les. Then in sevent ie s, came the era of calculators, w hic h replaced s lide rules comp letel y. T he calculators are ver y much in vogu e these da ys but to aid the structural e ngineer have come computers which are high-speed calculators and much mo re. When similar members (sa y, s labs, b eams columns, footings) are to be designed, relevant compu ter programs c an be used to get mo re accurate met hods which w ere earlier difficu lt and time-consuming to u se manuall y. Fo r examp le, frames u nd er horizo ntal loads were ana l ys ed b y portal o r cant ilever met hods manuall y. These gave o nl y approximat e resu lts and we had to be sat is fied w it h them. But now, comp uter can be used effect ivel y to get accurate results. Computer-Aided Analysi s & De sign:Co mputers have rece nt l y been brought in to aid structu ral designers. T hese m ac hines are a s effective as t he ava ilab le software (i.e. compu ter p ro grams). Programs are a va ilab le for design o f s labs, simp l y supported and continuous beams. Co lumns u nder biaxia l bend ing, isolated foo tings, combined fo otings a nd raft s. Ther e are also ava ilab le 2-D plane frame programs, gr ids, reta ining walls, etc. not onl y all t he ava ilable p ro grams ma y be to the liking o f a d es igner. T he as sumptions m ade in t he de velop ment o f some programs ma y no t be acceptable to t he structural des igner a nd in one ca se, it w as fo und t hat the colum n program pu rchased was valid onl y for s hort columns and not for long colu mns, alt hou gh at t he tim e of purchase, it was cla imed to be valid for both sho rt and ling co lumns. In practice, co nt inuou s beams, frame a nal ysis u nder horizonta l loads are a lmost alwa ys solved b y a computer. Sometime s, a n building is divided into fra mes in b oth t he pr inc ip al directio ns. A ll t he fr ames wit h t he vert ical and t he horizo ntal load s are pu t in t he computer and the solut ion is got w hic h includes t he complete d es ign of beams at al l the flo or levels. Colum n lo ads are t hen as sembled manuall y. Column design under bia xial be nding at all levels is done b y a co mpu ter program. A ver y powerful program STAAD Pro is a lso availab le in t he market whic h ca n be used fo r 3-D ana l ysi s of a building as a whole. It is usefu l for anal ysis a nd des ign of multi-storied build ings. We ma y
