The AutoCAD Working Environment

Like other windows- based applications, AutoCAD


comes with a wide range of features used in many
different aspects of a working drawing.
The AutoCAD Working
Environment
Application Menu Button
The application menu provides easy access to common tools.

- Open an existing drawing; open a new


template; save, print, or export
drawings; and other common options.
Search Tool

The Search bar displays at the top of the


Application menu. It is used to search for
any command. If you type any keyword in
the search bar, you can find a list of
commands related to it.
B. Quick Access Toolbar – is located along the top of the
application window (above or below the ribbon).

Provides direct access to common or defined set of commands


like New, Open, Save, and Plot.

Left-click on Arrow or to add or remove commands to the


toolbar

To Remove a tool: Place the cursor on the tool to remove and press
the right mouse button. Select Remove from Quick Access Toolbar.
D. Filename /title bar
Contains the program name (Autodesk
AutoCAD 2013) and the title of the current
drawing (Drawing1.dwg).
E: The InfoCenter is a tool used to search for
information. It is located in the upper right corner of the
screen.

InfoCenter Toolbar
Search Box – is a tool that allows you to search
for a particular data or document in a help file or
to web.
F. Toolbars/Ribbon - provide a single, compact
placement for operations/tools that are relevant to the
current workspace.

Comprised of three components.


C. Ribbon

I. Ribbon
• Draw Toolbar - Draw commands can be used
to create new objects such as lines and circles.

Modify Toolbar – is used to modify the basic


drawing objects in some way to suit the image
you need.

Eg.Move, Copy, Rotate and Mirror.

Workspaces and the Ribbon

For products that run on the Windows


operating system, a workspace is set of
ribbon tabs and panels, menus, toolbars,
and palettes that provide you with a
custom, task-oriented drawing
environment. You can change to a
different the ribbon by changing the
workspace. On the status bar, click
Workspace Switching and select the
workspace you want to use. For
example, here are the initial workspaces
available in AutoCAD.
O. Command Line Bar - is where you enter the
commands from the keyboard and where the
prompts are displayed. It has a text area where all
the previous commands are displayed.
N. Origin Icon/ UCS – is found at the bottom left hand
corner of the AutoCAD drawing window. You will see a
symbol like the one shown below.

This is called the UCS (User Coordinate System) icon


and it is there to remind you which is the X axis and
which is the Y axis.
K. Working/Drawing Area – is the place where your
drawings are displayed and modified.

Consider this your paper. The color of this area can be changed using
Options / Display Tab / Color
J. Cursor/ Crosshairs – is a type of cursor consisting of two
lines that intersect. The movement of the pointing device, such as a
mouse, controls the movement of the cursor. You will use the
cursor to locate points, make selections and draw objects.

The size can be changed using Options / Display tab / Crosshair Size.
L. View Cube is used primarily in
the 3D mode.
• It enables you to view and rotate
the 3D Model.

Navigation Bar
The Navigation Bar is displayed in
the drawing area and contains
navigation tools.
M. Navigation Bar
The Navigation Bar is displayed
in the drawing area and contains
navigation tools.
S. Status Bar- The Status Bar is located on the bottom
of the screen. It displays the current settings. These settings
can be turned ON or OFF by clicking on one of the buttons or
by pressing a corresponding function key, F2, F3 etc.
Status Bar- The Status Bar is located on the bottom of the screen. It displays
the current settings. These settings can be turned ON or OFF by clicking on one of
the buttons or by pressing a corresponding function key, F2, F3 etc.
