Cantinflas Biography Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes (Nickname: Cantinflas) September 12th, 1911 - April 20th, 1993

Born in: Santa Mara La Redonda, (Tepito) Mexico City. Profession: Actor, Comedian, and Doctor. Of humble origin, had to suffer poverty during his childhood. Tepito grew up in the neighborhood. To get ahead knew how to use audacity and street tricks he knew. He enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Mexico City to please his father, but during the study begins to make his first steps as a professional dancer and imitator. It is also a space dedicated to professional boxing long before venturing into the world of entertainment. He worked in the circus and soon his great talent for interpretation, his tenderness and his optimistic vision of the world led him to recreate the kind of "peel" (common man and poor in Mexico, which characterized with sagging pants, tattered shirt, tie around his neck ...) and thus was born "Cantinflas". One day he went to an appointment with a vaudeville impresario of Jalapa (Veracruz) to see him dance, but by a local incident in the Cantinflas had to go on stage and calm the public. Nerves not allowed to speak fluently and to talk haltingly made the audience laugh. So began his career as a comedian. Charles Chaplin himself admired and tried to make a film with him but was unable to even once called him "the best comedian in the world." The decades of the 40s and 50s were the most productive for Cantinflas, so much so that in 1946 refused to work with Mexican companies and signed contracts with Columbia Pictures. In 1952, displaying his characteristic generosity, undertook a campaign in favor of the poor to build a social habitat. He lived his last years in retirement at his ranch. As a person he was always admired for his simplicity, humility and generosity, which will come from a childhood of poverty and a successful adulthood carved freehand, even if sometimes art criticism was not in his favor. He devoted himself, after retiring from the art world, to contribute to charities, especially those who are dedicated to helping children. After suffering from lung cancer, died on April 20, 1993.
