Learning objectives
• Define an angle
• Explain types of angles
• Construct standard angles
• Construct a triangle given necessary
information
1. Angles
• An angle is a space subtended by two lines
meeting at 900
1.1 Types of Angles
1. Acute angle 2. Right angle
3. Obtuse angle 4. Reflex angle
1.2 Standard Angles
• Standard angles are angles that can easily
be constructed with a compass only e.g.
7.50, 150, 22.50 in short all those angles that
are divisible by 7.50.
2. Constructions
• Construct the following angles
a) 600
b) 300
c) 450
d) 900
2. Triangles
• A triangle is a plane figure bounded by three
straight lines.
2.1 Types of Triangles
1. Right-angled triangle 2. Isosceles triangle
3. Equilateral triangle 4. Scalene triangle
2.2 Parts of a Triangle
The triangle has the following parts
h θ
α
A B
i. Base: line parallel to the horizontal
ii. Altitude: vertical height of the triangle
iii. Vertical angle: angle opposite the base
iv. Vertices: corners of the triangle
v. Base angle: angle between the base and side
2. Constructions
• Construct the following triangles
a) Equilateral given length of side 60 mm
b) Isosceles given perimeter 110 mm and altitude 42 mm
c) Scalene given perimeter 170 mm and ratio of sides 2:5:3
d) Triangle given the base 40 mm, one base angle 600 and
perimeter 132 mm.
e) Triangle given the base 80 mm, altitude 38 mm and
vertical angle 600.
f) Circumscribe the triangle in a) and inscribe a circle inside
the triangle drawn in b).
