The Ron Paul Phenomenon

By Roger Sheeman

Jennifer Flowers, Publisher of Kendall Weekly Times

Ron Paul ran for President 4 years ago and garnered about 7% in national polling. This time around, he is polling nationally about 15%. He has a core following of supporters who without a doubt are the most enthusiastic followers of any candidate in the Republican primary. His message of freedom and liberty has struck the hearts of many who believe the federal government should adhere to constitution as it was written. His message is resonating with those who tend to be more libertarian than Republican. Republicans certainly want more freedom, less intrusion in our lives by the government and reduction of our massive federal debt. The question becomes what path we take to get there. Ron Paul wants to reduce federal spending by $1 trillion in one year. He really offers no specifics how to do this except bringing back all of our military from around the world back home. He offers no solution to improving the economy or how to get people back to work. No matter how you feel about Americas role in the world, bringing all our troops home would be a disaster by endangering world peace as fragile as it already is. Whether we like it or not, the United States is the worlds peacekeeper. Who else will stand up to those who want to rule the world by tyrannical means?

We must not become isolationist in our foreign policy, although I do believe we get into too many conflicts where we dont belong. Our involvement in Libya is a prime example. Dr. Paul says we should leave everybody alone and they will leave us alone. How nave can anyone be with all those Islamic radicals who have called for death to America? He even blames the U.S. for provoking the 9/11 attacks in New York. We must continue to have a superior military force. Peace through strength should be our goal. Ronald Reagan built up our military strength, which led to the collapse of the Soviet Empire. Ron Paul believes we should do away with the Federal Reserve. Republicans believe the Federal Reserve has overstepped its bounds and needs to be reeled in, but not eliminated. The Federal Reserve plays a useful role in dealing with monetary policy, but its powers to create more money and bail out domestic and foreign banks must be curtailed. The Federal Reserve must be audited and must be more open to the Congress and the public regarding its dealings. It has operated for too long without any real oversight. Ron Pauls message of freedom and liberty on the surface sounds great. He believes all drugs should be legalized. How many people would die from the ravages of cocaine, crack and heroin? A costly price for complete freedom. The drug cartels would be even bigger and more violent than they already are. He recently said he believes there should be zero income taxes. How great would that be? How

through the years, from weddings to birthdays. When you mention the Legion to people, not just from Oswego but around the region, they immediately think of the Historic Fish Fries on Friday night or the community Bingo on Wednesdays night, through which the Legion has served the community. However, the story does not end there. Other community contributions this organization makes includes yearly scholarships, the honor guard that serves the community by participating in parades attending the funerals of past members, or just offering a place to go and hear the current events of the day. So if you have the opportunity, stop on by the Oswego Legion and learn more about this wonderful community meeting place.

For 79 years, the Oswego Legion has served as a meeting and gathering place for veterans and family; however, their contribution to the community goes much further. Organized in 1933, the Legion was meant to serve as a place for local vets and family to share. However, the Legion has grown to serve more as a local meeting place for community members who share in the activities that the Legion has provided over the years. From the Vets parade to the Fish Fries, the Oswego Legion always provides the community the opportunity to participate and become part of the family atmosphere at the Legion. The Oswego Legion offers a banquet room and a full catering service that has served in providing families of Oswegoland memorable experiences

would we pay for our military, our federal courts, maintain our national parks and government buildings? No one wants to pay any more taxes than absolutely necessary, but elimination all income tax is a delusional thought. Ron Paul and his followers are not real Republicans. They are radical libertarians. Ron Pauls ideas are not good for our country. Republicans believe in a constitutional conservative approach to government. Ron Paul believes in no government. Ron Pauls ideas are bad for America.

It takes a little looking to find evidence of what came before when it comes to rails that once crisscrossed the Aurora area. Not many people know, for instance, the birthplace of todays BNSF railroad was in Aurora. Indeed, the Aurora Branch Railroad was genesis of the Burlington and Quincy, known as CB and Q or just Q. The BNSF came later. Portions of the Aurora Branchs first line connecting it with the Chicago and Galena Union (now Union Pacific) at Turner Junction (now West Chicago) are still in use. And, over time, the Aurora Branch Railroad became CB and Q, yet its shops remained in Aurora, playing an important role in railroad history, as well as in the history of the area. The Aurora Shops built early steam locomotives and rolling stock. Several examples of their homemade wooden cabooses are preserved around Kane and Kendall counties. Also, the shops claim credit for constructing the first car dome there. A sizeable percentage of the population in and around Aurora found employment with the Q, and being the first railroad in the area, most local industries became customers.

Today nearly all of those industries are gone; however, part of the Qs shops complex still stands, used a commuter station and brewpub. Some of its history lives on throughout the place. Fewer people are still aware that the three other major railroads had a presence in the local area. It takes a lot of looking to find any remnants of the following three. The Chicago

and Northwestern Railroad (now Uunion Pacific) had tracks running west of the Fox River, entering Aurora from the north end. Meanwhile, the Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern (now Canadian National) around Rathbone Ave near the Aurora Montgomery border. Portions of both those railroads live on today as the Virgil Gilman Nature Trail. Travel by train was the norm many years back, with the previously

Pardon the history lesson, but did you know what an interesting variety of railroads helped develop the Chicagoland area into the megalopolis it is today? Although some of the lines may have changed names, and not all of them are still in business, together they made Chicago into the rail center of the nation: a fact thats still true today.

I had a chance to attend both of these, and both featured wit aplenty. PIMProv especially featured incredibly quickwitted (and bling-bedecked) actors who improvised with impressive speed. As Laurie observed, the Comedy Shrine indeed has something for everyone, and that the gift of mirth is even more crucial these days especially.

mentioned railroads offering passengers services at one time or another. From Aurora, you could go just about anywhere by train, including every town in the surrounding countryside. No less than interurban trolley lines to and from Aurora existed less than a century ago! There was the Aurora Elgin and Fox River Electric, Aurora Plainfield and Joliet, The Chicago Aurora and DeKalb, the Aurora Yorkville and Morris, and the largest most successful of this long-extinct bunch, the Chicago Aurora and Elgin. Part of the Roarin Elgin" as the CAandE was known locally, survives and a bike trail, too. The rest of Aurora's interurban were ill-conceived, cheaply constructed lines that never developed sufficient business to survive. Now, as remnants of extinct railroads fade into oblivion, a few of us continue trying to decipher their fascinating story. Theyre our ghosts!

David Sinker is a comedian himself with very impressive credentials, ranging from winning a Midwest Emmy to jumpstarting the career of a then-neophyte named Steve Carell. Its obvious that Daves ambition and passion for comedy is heartfelt and that it scintillates in every facet of the Comedy Shrine. Indeed, the atriumor Shrine, if you willis peopled by a massive collection of Daves own comedy memorabilia. The owner also stressed that each comedian who performs at the Shrine is a professional, and some of their performersnamely Prescott Folk and David Graham have been featured on Comedy Central. Others have also been seen on Premium Blend and HBO, particularly the comedians featured in the Shrines weekend Superstars of Stand-up. Formerly located in downtown Naperville, the Shrine relocated to Aurora last year because they outgrew the space and could only do improv, according to Laurie. At length they branched out, as Laurie stated, to include stand-up in their repertoire. With their new location settled, they offered a wide range of shows and events on two theaters: one for improv, the other for stand-up. First in the week's lineup is an open-mic night (for $5) on Mondays. Aspiring comedians also have resources to better their craft by enrolling in writing classes at the Shrine, some headed by Dave. In addition to this, they also feature variations of the popular sketch show Whose Line is it Anyway? on Friday and Saturday nights, including a more risqu version of it

This is my description of and tribute to the 1985 Chicago Bears. In my opinion, they were the single greatest football team that ever lived. More than three decades ago, a professional football team dominated an entire league, electrified an entire

nation, and took an entire city by storm. They were the 1985 Chicago Bears. And in this journalists notso-humble opinion, they were the greatest professional football team that ever lived. In general terms, the 1985 Chicago Bears had a season for the Ages. They finished with an overall record of 18 wins against just a single loss, en route to being crowned the Super Bowl Champions. It was one of the greatest records in the long and profound history of the NFL; and it still is to this day, and always will be for that matter. The Bears were so dominant that year, their opponents stood absolutely no chance of defeating them. And this was a fact that became unmistakably clear from the very first game right on through the Super Bowl. They would come charging out of the gate with the power and force of Seattle Slew and Secretariat combined and never look back. They would win their first 12 games by the overall score of 359 to 127! The specifics of that incredible win streak are simply mind blowing. For instance, in week 11, the Bears would obliterate the Dallas Cowboys 44 to 0 in front of 63,855 stunned Dallas fans at the Old Texas Stadium. It was the single worst defeat in Cowboys' history. The Bears would follow this awesome display of firepower with a 36 to 0 demolition of the Atlanta Falcons at beautiful Soldier Field the following Sunday. The Bears continued to smash their helpless opponents to smitherines for the remainder of the 1985 season, clinching a playoff berth almost two months before the season even ended and locking up the division title just a week later. They would set an NFL record by amassing 456 points in 16 regular season games, which averages to 28.5 points per game, while allowing their opponents a measly 12.4 points per contest. As great as the 1985 Bears were during the regular season, amazingly, they raised their game to a whole new level during the playoffs, winning each game by astounding margins. In the first round, they really cut the Giants down to size with a 21 to 0 shellacking. During this contest, they would allow the Giants vaunted running game only 32 rushing yards, while sacking quarterback Phil Simms a record eight times.

The Bears next victim (I mean opponent) was the Los Angeles Rams. The Bears crushed them 24 to 0; and once again, their stellar defense put on a tremendous show for the 65,522 in attendance at Soldier Field. They derailed the Rams power running game, by limiting Eric Dickerson to just 46 yards rushing, the lowest total of his entire career, and suffocated their passing game by holding quarterback Dieter Brock to just 66 yards passing from only 10 completions. Now came the most important game of the year; Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots. Incredibly, the Bears had saved their best performance for the big stage. The one and only glitch came on the second play from scrimmage when the legendary Walter Payton fumbled a hand-off from Quarterback Jim McMahon, and the Patriots recovered on the Chicago 19- yardline. This seemed real bad at first, until the Bears defense completely snuffed the Pats offense, allowing zero yards, and forcing them to settle for a 36-yard field goal instead. That defensive stand really electrified the Bears offense. They would score an unbelievable 44 unanswered points en route to a 46 to 10 annihilation of a completely and thoroughly overmatched Patriots team. It was one of the most lopsided scores in the history of the Super Bowl; and remains so to this day. The 1985 Chicago Bears gave new meaning to the word: dominant. They were unstoppable offensively and insurmountable defensively. Their opponents were beaten so thoroughly, that it looked as though the Bears were actually going up against Division A College teams rather than other professional football teams. In summation, during one glorious season, the Windy

City bore witness to the greatest football team to ever play the gamethe 1985 Chicago Bears.

Southsiders Winter Update

Sox Looking To Fill Gaps in 2012 By Martin Flowers

The 2012 campaign for the Southsiders left many faithful wondering what is next. Long-time manager Ozzie Gullien is gone, and General Manager Kenny Williams hired first-time manager Robin Ventura. With high-priced Adam Dunne looking to rebound after a lackluster year, what direction will the Sox look in heading into the winter meetings? With the pitching and hitting top concern, the Sox have established a strong farm system that will help develop players. The main question now is will they look to compete in 2012 or enter a rebuilding phase. GM Kenny Williams' track record states that each season is an opportunity to win, and he has historically positioned the club to compete. Finishing 79-83 and with the fifth highest payroll baseball in 2011, the Sox business plan might call for immediate action, looking long-term and cutting payroll in order to see the team turn a profit. Another alternative is to look at the mid-level free agency and develop youth early in the season. Without a doubt there will be changes on the South side when the season opens. During his career Robin Ventura was a hard-nosed player with a bluecollar approach to work and many hours developing the trade. He will

encourage this value in the 2012 club. The Central Division is wide open with Cleveland, Detroit, and the Sox as the teams to watch early in the season. As we approach spring training, follow roster invites and key moves through the draft as the Sox look to make 2012 a year to remember on the South Side.

Chicago Slaughter Report

By Dick Kolf

The 2012 season of the Chicago Slaughter will be starting up again. Last season the Slaughter ran into the playoffs with thrilling wins behind fourth quarter heroics by Kicker Chris Nendick. This season, change is in the air at the Sears Center. Coach McMichael looks to rebuild the Slaughter with the departure of notable players Jarrett Payton and Chris Nendick. Look for the team to feature a strong defense that will close down the alleys for opposing offenses this season, and a return to Slaughter Ball with a run and shoot offense with explosive running game on tap. The Slaughter begin the season February 19th against the Bloomington Steele. For ore information on the upcoming season and the Arena League visit the Slaughters' web site.

are a few insights into how the games are lining up. The AFC picture is the most clear. Tom Brady and the Patriots are the clear favorite to win the AFC Championship against a not-quite-readyfor-prime-time Ravens team. Sure the Ravens are a respectable team with a good quarterback, but Flacco has not out-performed his opponent since early December. Combine this with the fact there is no defense right now that can stop the Patriots from getting their points, spells defeat for

the Ravens; possibly by a lot. My pick NE 35, BR 24. The NFC picture is a bit murkier for the championship game. The 49ers won the last battle between these two teams 27-20 back on November 13th. The book-makers give the edge to the 49er's, but nobody is real confident in that call. The Giants expect Bradshaw to play, and the Giants are still riding their contact high after dispatching Rodgers and the Pack. The Giants

definitely have the momentum and I believe this will be one game that shows how important momentum is. With the questionable weather at game time, Bradshaw's ankle improving, and a solid Blue defensive line, I am going with the Giants in a minor upset in this one. NY 24-SF17. Whether it is the 49ers or Giants in the NFC, neither team seems up to the task of bringing down the Patriots. Brady is just too strong right now and the rest of the Pats offense too quick for either defense. The possibility of a low scoring Superbowl is almost laughable at this point. Even Tim Tebow could not bring Tom Brady down! (That's not really relevant but it is mandated that Tebow's name appears in every football article in the USA). My prediction: a lot of happy football fans in Boston this winter.

struck again, his fourth goal in seven games, and the held off a late charge by San Jose to get the win 4-3, claiming the top spot in the conference for now with 60 points. As for the young Hawks, Kane continues to struggle scoring goals, as his old teammate Antti Niemi makes what could be the save of the year on Kane to further frustrate him. Andrew Shaw continues to play like he belongs here in the NHL, and Viktor Stalberg was named second star of the week in the NHL for his strong play last week and first career hat trick. All in all, things are looking up with the Hawks as long as the young stars can keep up the good play.

This past weekend for the Hawks certainly had its ups and downs. With an early start Saturday with an 11:30 start at the Joe in Detroit, the Hawks took to the ice against their long-time rival, and it looked as though the Hawks needed some coffee as they slept walked their way through the first 30 minutes of the game, only coming out of their slumber late in the second. The young stars of the Hawks have been playing well, and it was Andrew Shaw lighting the lamp again, scoring his third goal in six games on a gift from Jimmy Howard. Even though they came on strong, tied the game late, and sent it to overtime, the Redwings had the last laugh when they scored late into overtime to beat the Hawks, 3-2. A quick turn-around found the Hawks at home Sunday night facing another top Western Conference opponent in the San Jose Sharks. With the Western Conference so tight, this one looked to be another hardfought game, and the fans were not disappointed. This time the Hawks came out flying, with David Bolland and Viktor Stalberg finding the back of the net in the first period. The second period didnt start the way the Hawks wanted. The Sharks came out flying and tallied two goals in the span of 26 seconds, but the Hawks would get the lead back 5 minutes later and finish the second with a 3-2 lead. The Hawks stretched the lead to 4-2 when the kid (Shaw)

Further information on Sunnymere can be found on our website at www. Sunnymere.com. Rhonda K. Sleezer, R. N. Executive Director
