Good afternoon class! Today I am going to talk about my critical thinking and leadership project.

Before we start, allow me to ask you a question. What is a good leader? Anybody? Thank you for your remarks. Now let s proceed to the presentation. Florence Nightingale. So, Florence Nightingale was born from a rich family. Her father is a rights activist. Florence Nightingale fights for human rights. She is actually the first person to create a nursing school which is named as the St. Thomas Hospital. During the Crimean War, Florence nightingale is known as the lady with the lamp. This is due to the countless times she has been making her rounds in the military wounded hospital. Florence Nightingale is the founder of the modern nursing studies. Now, we celebrate the International nurses day based on her birthday, which is on the 12th of may every year. Now the next person is Dr. Jean Watson. Dr. Jean Watson is a modern popular figure who specializes in the care of nursing. She has numerous achievements, as seen here. . She actually took her PhD at the University of Victoria on 1973. She is a Fellow of the American academy of nursing. Fellowship is one of the highest remarks you may acquire in your field of study. Dr. Jean Watson founded the Watson caring science institute. This specializes on the care. She also created the Caring theory of nursing which we are discussing in the next slide. These are the ten caritas processes. Caritas is a latin word that means love in the sense of charity. Allow me to read these ten processes to you. . By the theory, Watson says that the nurse should treat the

patients holistically(including the body, mind and spirit). The nurse should display unconditional acceptance and be treated with all positive impression that the nurse could give. The nurse should also spend uninterrupted time with the patients. This is also known as the Transpersonal Caring Moment.which is the next slide Transpersonal caring moment is when the nurse should spend uninterrupted time with the patient. Of course, this does not only apply to the nursing field. For example, you can have a transpersonal caring moment, applying your nursing skills and attitude towards your friends who need help. It is because nursing is a career that can change a person wholly. These are the leadership styles on the next slide. Let me define to you these three. Authoritarian (Autocratic) the style when the leaders want something done in an allotted time without getting the advice from their followers.

Participative (Democratic) the decision-making process is done through having the followers give their views and opinions. Then, the leader shall decide on which action should be chosen. The selection process may be of majority voting or of the leaders own evaluation discretion. Delegative (Laissez-Faire) the decision-making process is allowed to the followers to do. The followers will do their own decisions in their respective courts of responsibility. However, the leader makes the general decisions. The leader may also interfere with the individual decisions that the follower has made when he sees the need to do such. I believe that I am a democratic leader most o the time. However, it really depends on the situation. If urgency is in need, I can easily take the authoritarian role. If for example, doing projects, I can take the participative role.
The next slide talks about the long term care facility that I have visited during my clinicals. We all know how I had my experienced it. Anyway, in my findings there are There are 10 care aides in this

facility. There are also a number of LPNs and RNs who lead the two floors. These nurses total to a number of 5. Aside from nurses, there is the maintenance crew and the recreational staff. These care aides and nurses have different styles of caring. Some do their practice very fast that they do not display much affection to their residents. Other nurses are truly careful with the residents that they do their job very well. Other nurses are there to show hate to the residents due to some reasons. I believe there are other same instances that happen. Other facilities could have been practicing a better or worse care. Therefore, it is realistic to say that what we learn in nursing school shall soon get emboldened with experiences in the field.
This is the long term care facility scenario provided. On the next slide, let me discuss my solutions. The goal is to .

The solution is to use my empathic skills to determine how mary really feels. Afterwhich, I can already go to find the solutions. One of the most probable solutions is having a private one-on-one conversation with mary. She should tell me her problems, guaranteeing confidentiality, I can tell her that nursing is a career that is important for the people. The people need her, a good nurse who can really change their end-of-life lives. I will open the gate for her by saying that she should realize the

feeling of caring and nurturing the people while they are on the end of their lives. It is a very promising and responsible role. She will make a difference to how the residents will be experiencing their lives before they die. If Mary has a religion, it would be an advantage because I can tell her that God is proud that she can give teachings and nurturing to the people who are waiting to meet Him. I will tell Mary the fact that every nurse has a connection to the patient, based on Jean Watsons Theory. And that is the end of my presentation. Do you have any questions?
