Lady Hawks Stumble

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Two days after the Saint Marys college womens basketball team pulled off a low-scoring upset over Catholic University, the Lady Seahawks fell to Marymount 60-50. Although Saint Marys claimed the games first lead, Marymount rallied in the first half to take the lead for good. The Seahawks stayed close most of the game, and a three pointer by guard Kiely Murphy brought them within one point in the middle of the second half, but Marymount used a strong offensive spurt to put Saint Marys out of the game. GM Wrestling Wins Big

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Ahead 39-36 with one match remaining, the Great Mills Hornets needed a big win in the 189 lb. weight class to beat Thomas Stone. Thats when Keane Flores stepped onto the mat. I didnt really expect to be in that position when I came out here today, Flores said after the match. But I was relaxed when I went out there. Flores, a first year wrestler, took the mat and dictated the pace of the match. He was able to get back points early and made nice escapes off the bottom. That was one of the [matches] I just couldnt watch, Hornets coach Bill Griffith said. I kept pacing back and forth. In the third, both wrestlers were visibly tired, and Flores opponent actually took injury time. But Flores fought through the fatigue and finished the match ahead 14-5 to help the Hornets escape with the 43-36 victory. I was really, really nervous, Flores teammate Matt Kosewicz said after watching the final match. But he just went out there and wrestled hard. It was really exciting. Stone claimed the last four matches to charge back into the competition before Flores win halted their run. Kosewicz, also a first year wrestler, had a critical pin in the 135 lb. class to help lift the Hornets. His win came in the middle of the match and gave Great Mills a 33-12 lead. I thought it was important. I was doing it for the team, Kosewicz said. I went out there thinking just dont get pinned by him, but then I went all out and just took him out. Thomas Stone claimed the first two matches of the competition, but four forfeits by the Cougars gave the Hornets a 24-12 lead. Kosewicz said the forfeits were helpful, but was confident that his team would have prevailed in those matches had Stone not forfeited. They were pretty important, he said of the forfeits. But I think that even if [Stone] had guys to fill those spaces, our team would have gone out there and wrestled their butts off and won. Hornets Hit the Road

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer After a five game home stand in which the Great Mills boys basketball team went undefeated, the Hornets have packed up for a six-game away stretch. We have to be able to pack up the energy that we had here at Great Mills, put it on the bus, and take it wherever we go, Great Mills head coach Frank Peck said. The Hornets started by bringing that energy to Huntingtown, where they beat the Hurricanes 60-34. Center Trae Jacobs led Great Mills with 15 points, while guards B.J. Brown and Will Smith each threw in 12. ? In their most recent home game, the Hornets beat McDonough handily, 70-51. The first quarter featured 11 lead changes and ended on a free throw by point guard Cody Kohn that put the Hornets up 13-11. [McDonough] is real good, Brown said. Theyve got good shooters, they box out, [they have] big men down there, and theyre physical. We knew they were going to come out strong.

Lady Raiders Win SMAC Championship

As Indoor Track Winds Down, Competition Heats Up
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Leonardtown girls indoor track team took first place in the last three events of Saturdays SMAC championship at the Prince Georges County Sportsplex to win the title by 20 points. After Olivia Websters second place finish in the 3200m run, the Lady Raiders won the 4x200m relay, the 800m run, and the 4X400m relay. Sophomore Alex Evitts ran anchor for Leonardtown in both relays and produced come-from-behind wins in each race. She also won the 500m run and placed third in the 300m dash to compile 16 individual points. When other SMAC coaches approached Leonardtown coach Shawn Snyder after the meet to inquire about the new Raider sensation, he replied modestly with a smile on his face, shes a sophomoreshes coming around. I am really excited, Evitts panted just minutes after winning the 500m run. This year I knew I had to come up and prove myself. Along with Evitts, Webster and Kaitlyn Dillow helped the Raiders lock down middle and distance events. Webster took forth in the 1600m run, and Dillow won the 800m run and took second in the 1600m run. We have a history throughout the years of middle distance, Snyder said. They just seem to come our way. The Raiders piled up 48 points in the last five races to pass La Plata for the win. According to Snyder, the 4x200m relay was the biggest surprise for the Raiders. La Platas seed time ranked them second, while the Raiders were ranked third. But the Warriors suffered a fall during the race, and See SMAC page B-5

Cards Snap Seahawks Streak

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Seahawks four game win streak came to an end Jan. 25 when Catholic University center Stephen Wheeler tapped in a game-winning layup with .8 seconds remaining in the game. Wheelers game-winner came just 30 seconds after Seahawk guard Tyson Lesesne knocked down a jumper to knot the score at 73. Saint Marys coach Chris Harney attributed the loss to poor rebounding. We got out-rebounded 38-26, he said. It kind of drove the point home that they won the game on an offensive rebound. They tipped it in and we just did a poor job boxing out. The Hawks led the entire first half as they searched for their fifth consecutive victory, but the Cardinals shot 65.4 percent in the second half to climb back into the game and eventually escape with the victory. We were clicking [in the first half], Harney said. But when you play a team that good, you have to do all the little things, and [rebounding] was one area where we really did a poor job. Thats what cost us the game. We played good defense, and the offense was good. We didnt box out, we gave them too many second chances and thats exactly what happened at the end of the game. ahawks traveled to Marymount University, where the Saints were able to pull off their fourth straight victory, beating Saint Marys 89-80. Behind guard Mike Grays 35 point, 11 rebound and 6 assist performance, the Saints came back from a five point halftime deficit to take the lead and the win. He was a really strong post player and he really beat us up inside, Harney said of Gray. We didnt have an answer for him defensively as far as just keeping from scoring inside. He basically just scored at will. He was a lot more physical than we were. For the Seahawks, point guard Mike Smelkinson had a career-high 31 points and seven assists against Marymount. I think hes just comfortable, Harney said of Smelkinson. I think hes kind of made the transition now to what we need him to do and I think hes just playing good basketball right now. Hes just confident. But hed trade all the points for a win I dont think weve seen his best basketball yet. Hes just getting better and better every game. Guard Tyson Lesesne added 18 points and six rebounds while center Alex Irmer chipped in 12 points. Saint Marys is 4-6 in the Capital Athletic Conference and fell a half game behind Marymount with the loss. In the Knowl
Below the Rim
The tallest player in the league right now is Yao Ming at 76. The tallest man ever to play in the NBA, who some might remember better for his starring role in the film My Giant alongside Billy Crystal, is Gheorghe Muresan, who towered over the rest of the league at 77. Who remembers anything that goofy oaf did in the By Andrew Knowlton NBA? In case you missed it, Muresan plays himself in the commercial, in which the host of a home-shopping network tries on Muresans cologne and asks, Is that cabbage, Gheorghe? to which Muresan responds, Chicks dig it If you never saw that one, you havent lived. And if you cant find it on YouTube, theres something wrong with the society we live in. But enough about Muresan. This is about the little guys. By little, I mean 510 and shorter. In the NBA, thats miniscule. Muggsy Bogues, Anthony Spud Webb, Earl Boykins, Nate Robinson. These are some of the shortest players to put on an NBA uniform, but quite honestly, they are some of the most exciting to watch. Spud Webb was 57, and he won the 1986 slam dunk contest. Im an inch taller than Webb and I can barely reach the net. This past year, Robinson, the 59 Knicks point guard, won the dunk contest when he swung the ball between his legs and threw it down with his right hand. These high-flying little guys spice up the NBA with their no-look passes, scrappy defense, and amazing leaping abilities. But believe it or not, you can find guys like these right here in Saint Marys County. Head on down to Saint Marys College to catch a Seahawks game. You wont miss Mike Smelkinson, the 55 point guard who makes those 64 guys look foolish. Hes usually the quickest guy on the court, and he wont hesitate to use his speed in a full-court press situation. He drained 31 points on Marymount over the weekend and dished out seven assists. I dont think Smelkinson can rise like Spud Webb or Nate Robinson, but one thing is for surehes been eating his Wheaties. Great Mills has a guard, B.J. Brown. Hes not the shortest guy on the court at 59, but when you see him soaring in the air for a dunk, you might think he was shot out of a rocket. Caution: do not let this guy get a fast break. He will make the rim shake. Behind the arc, Brown is like Sam Perkins smooth. And he can kill you in the paint, too. Its not uncommon for him to drop 25 in a game. At Ryken, theres Julius Brown. Hes about 510 give or take an inch or two. Julius can score 15 plus on some of the East Coasts best teams on any given night. Hell drain treys from all over the floor and drive to the basket at will. Like Allen Iverson, Julius is fearless and wont hesitate to sacrifice his body on the court. Like Smelkinson, Julius Brown may not throw down 360 dunks, but he can go toe-to-toe with the big guys in just about every other category. So raise your glasses to the little man (Im one myself)! Raise it high! Be proud! Repeat after me: Chicks dig the little man!

Maryland Youth at Risk

Study Shows Maryland Students Make Risky Decisions at Same Rate as Rest of Nation
A recent study shows that Marylands young people, much like their counterparts from across the nation, are involved in a significant amount of risky behavior. The new student activity data is included in the 2005 Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey, part of the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), published biannually by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Maryland data, released by MSDE today, finds that for the most part, the choices made by Maryland students do not differ significantly for high school students in the rest of the nation. For example, 73 percent of Maryland students in grades 9-12 have tried alcohol at least once, compared to 74.3 percent nationally. In some cases, Maryland data is somewhat better than the rest of the nation. More than 16 percent of Maryland students said that had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, a rate below the 23 percent national figure. Maryland has been documenting youth behavior for several years, through our own Maryland Adolescent Survey, and our data shows that we are making progress in steering students toward good decision making, said State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick. This report confirms our belief that we still have a long way to go. The Maryland General Assembly in 2004 required that MSDE conduct the YRBS for the first time. The survey was conducted in the spring of 2005 and covered traffic safety; personal safety; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; suicide; diet, nutrition, and physical activity; and protective factors. Thirty schools were randomly selected to take part in the survey, drawn from the states 24 systems. The General Assembly required the signature of a parent or guardian specifically authorizing the students participation before a he or she could be given a survey to complete, a process known as active consent. A total of 1,414 usable surveys were obtained for the sample size, about 65 percent of the enrollment in the sampled classes. Among the results of the survey: Nearly three in 10 Maryland students report feeling sad or hopeless for two weeks in a row or more (29.7 percent), a figure on par with the national statistic (28.5 percent). Nineteen percent of high school students in Maryland report carrying a weapon in the past 30 days, a figure close to the national average (18.5 percent). More than one-quarter of Maryland students (27.4 percent) consider themselves slightly or over overweight, slightly better than the national average (31.5 percent). Nearly 9 out of 10 Maryland high school students (89.5 percent) report they have been taught about HIV infection in school, compared to 87.9 percent nationally. The survey results are available on the MSDE website, http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/MSDE/ divisions/studentschoolsvcs/ student_services_alt/surveys/surveys.

Test Drive: 2007 Ford Fusion

By: Jesse Stump Contributing Writer Few cars truly embody the American automobile the way the Ford Taurus has for the past two decades. Everyone and their brother has thought about buying a Taurus at some point; heck, my family has owned four! However, 2007 will mark the end of an illustrious 20 year run that saw nearly 7 million Tauruses roll off the line. To fill the huge hole the Taurus will leave in its lineup, Ford will turn to its recently introduced mid-size sedan, the Fusion, to carry the torch. Walk Around The Fusions exterior is marked with sharp edges and a relatively sporty stance. The SEL V6 model comes standard with 17 aluminum wheels and chrome dual exhaust tips. The bold chrome grille and rear accents are standard across all models and give the Fusion a unique look. For an additional $300, a rear-deck spoiler is also available. Interior The Fusions cabin is surprisingly spacious, though rear legroom can be a bit tight if the front seats are positioned for a taller passenger. The optional 8-speaker sound system is a worthwhile upgrade from the standard unit and can be paired with Sirus satellite radio. Appearancewise, Ford opts to use glossy black plastic in places where 2007 Ford Fusion leather or brushed aluminum would have made for a classier alternative. As a result, the interior feels a bit cheap, even with the upgraded leather seat package. Test Drive For 2007, the 6-speed automatic-only V6 models are given an optional allwheel drive system. I tested an SEL V6 with AWD and wish the weather had been worse. Under normal driving conditions, the majority of the power is provided to the front wheels and the system goes unnoticed. The car is constantly monitoring traction, and within milliseconds, capable of distributing power from wheels that are slipping to those with traction. Under hard acceleration, cabin noise is rather high, and you hear the Fusion revving through each of its gears. Regardless, I was impressed with the Fusions responsiveness. Its not exactly a small car and the V6s 220hp is significantly lower than other sedans in its class. The Fusion is no Mustang, but its most certainly not my moms Taurus. Overall The Fusion has huge shoes to fill in taking over where the Taurus left off, but I think Ford is on the right track. Remember, even the Tauruss interior was once burgundy crushed velour. Navy News
Small Unmanned Air System Requirements Addressed
The profile of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps family of unmanned aviation systems is expanding.
In the coming months, the Navys PMA-263 acquisition program office intends to hold a full and open competition to fill the requirement for a small, tactical unmanned aerial system (UAS), to be utilized by both the Navy and Marine Corps. Experience with this size of UAS in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terror has validated the need for this capability. This small UAS is expected to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support for tactical level decisions and unit level defense, and protection for Navy ships and Marine Corps land forces. The draft request for proposal is expected to be released this fall. (NOTE: The Navy refers to this capability as the Small Tactical UAS (STUAS) while the Marine Corps refers to it as Tier II UAS.) Currently this small UAS capability is being met in theater, by sole-sourced service contracts, for the Navy and the Marine Corps through their respective acquisition commands. Under such service contracts, the UAS is owned and operated by the contractor, not the government. This year, each service will continue with service contracts, but on a competitive basis. This effort will continue until the larger, STUAS/Tier II joint effort reaches initial operational capability in FY 10. Additionally, the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab in Quantico, Virginia, has begun a Tier II UAS concept demonstration effort. This system will serve as a test bed for developing concepts of operation; techniques, training and procedures (TTPs); new technologies; and advanced payloads. The information gathered from the Marine Corps concept demonstrator will be used in the development of the combined STUAS/Tier II program at PMA-263. The UAS program office, PMA-263, reports to the Program Executive Office, Strike Weapons and Unmanned Aviation (PEO (W)), and is located at the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland. This years schedule includes the San Diego Symposium March 22-24; the East Coast Symposium, to be held in Alexandria, Va., April 19-20; the European Symposium held this year in Linkoping, Sweden June 13 - 15; and their 51st Annual Symposium and Awards Banquet in Anaheim, Calif. Sept. 26-29. In association with the Society of Flight Test Engineers, SETP also sponsors an annual Flight Test Safety Workshop, which will be held in San Diego this year, May 7 - 10. The SETP is organized into eight geographical Sections, each of which has their own officers and slate of local educational and social activities. The East Coast Section held their Section elections last fall and installed their 2007 officers, all from southern Maryland, at a luncheon meeting in Patuxent Rivers Cedar Point Officers Club Dec. 13. The new East Coast Section Chairman is Mike Wallace, a Boeing Experimental Test Pilot; Vice Chairman is Cmdr. Bob Blake, USN, the Navys MH-60R IPT leader; Secretary is Dr. Jim Casler of Wyle Labs; and the Treasurer is Cmdr. James Glass, USN, the Executive Officer of the US Naval Test Pilot School. The SETP, with more than 2100 individual members and more than 70 corporate members across the USA and in 35 other countries around the world, was founded in 1955 to promote air safety and contribute to aeronautical advancement by promoting sound aeronautical design and development; interchanging ideas, thoughts and suggestions of the members, assisting in the professional development of experimental pilots, and providing scholarships and aid to members and the families of deceased members.

St Marys County Residents Lead Test Pilots Society

The Society of Experimental Test Pilots, known throughout the aerospace profession as the SETP, had their annual change of leadership last fall during their 50th Annual Symposium and Awards Banquet held in Anaheim, Calif. For the first time in the history of this prestigious international society, all three of the most senior leaders and their families have been long-time residents of St. Marys County. Jim Sandberg, the incoming President, has lived in Bushwood since 1994; Mike Rabens, the outgoing President, lived in the county from 1993 to 2001; and Ricardo Traven, the incoming President-Elect, has lived in the county since 1992. The Societys newest President, Sandberg, and his wife Marja, have lived in the countys 7th District for more than 14 years. As a Marine test pilot he flew the original F-18 Hornets at Pax River and at Pointt Mugu, Calif. in the early 80s. Since joining Northrop Grumman 25 years ago, he has been a test pilot in California state on the F-5, F-20, QF-86, YF-23, B-2, JPATS and back at Pax River again on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet throughout its EMD program from 96 to 99. He is currently the Director of the F-35 Integrated Test Force for the Joint Strike Fighter at Pax River. The Sandbergs son, Lt Brian Sandberg, is a Navy helicopter test pilot at Pax River who graduated from the Test Pilot School in December, 2006. Here in the county, Sandberg is a member of the Seventh District Optimists Club, serves on the Board of Advisors of the John Glenn Squadron of the Marine Corps Aviation Association (MCAA), and on the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the Naval Academy Alumni Association. The Societys outgoing President, Ret. Capt. Mike Rabens, his wife Lisa and their children lived in St. Marys county for more than eight years between 1993 and 2001 while he was in the Navy with assignments as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS), then as Head of Carrier Suitability, returning to USNTPS as Commanding Officer, and finally as Deputy Program Manager, Joint Strike Fighter Program. During this period, he also served as Treasurer, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the East Coast Section of SETP. On a previous tour, he was a student test pilot at USNTPS in 1985 as part of Class 88. Mike and his family moved from southern Maryland in 2001 when he was assigned as Commander, Naval Test Wing Pacific at Point Mugu, Calif. Rabens retired from the Navy in 2004 and is currently the Manager of Flight Test Operations for Raytheon Technical Services Company, LLC in Van Nuys, Calif. The SETP President-Elect serves on the Board of Directors for a year before becoming the President for a year and then continues to serve on the Board for another year as the Executive Advisor. This years PresidentElect, Ricardo Traven, and his family, have lived in St Marys County since 1992. As a Captain in the Canadian Air Force, he graduated from the USAFTPS at Edwards AFB with class 92A and then was assigned to Strike Test Squadron (now VX-23), at Pax River, as Canadian exchange officer. He retired from the CAF in 1997 and joined Boeing as a senior experimental test pilot on the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the X-31 test program. He is currently the Boeing Chief Test Pilot for all models of the Hornet family of aircraft and is the Boeing Air Show Demonstration Pilot for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Ricardo and his wife Shameron have a son in the civil air patrol and a daughter who recently soloed in a J-3 Cub. Ric owns and maintains a 1943 Stinson Reliant and a Beech Baron at the St. Marys County airport. The Society of Experimental Test Pilots holds four major technical symposia each year.

NAVAIR to Get New Commander

Vice Adm. (Sel) David Venlet will assume command of the Naval Air Systems Command from Vice Adm. Walter Massenburg during a ceremony Feb. 16. Adm. Mike Mullen, Chief of Naval Operations, will preside over the ceremony. Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, Dr. Delores Etter is also scheduled to attend. The ceremony will be held at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Hangar 306 at 10 a.m. Massenburg has served as NAVAIR commander since November of 2003 heading up a team with more than 27,000 program managers, depot artisans, engineers, acquisition experts, test pilots and logisticians.

Perc Test Applications Available

The St. Marys County Health Department is accepting applications now for 2007 wet season perc testing. Those interested in having their properties tested for suitability for on-site sewage disposal systems should apply now. Perc tests are required for all new construction and sewage disposal systems on properties outside public sewer system areas. Sports
SMAC
Continued from page B-1 faltered to fourth. The Raiders took advantage of La Platas fall and beat out Thomas Stone by .67 seconds. Before the meet I knew it was going to be between us and La Plata, Snyder said. It was just a matter of who got those extra pointsThat [race] could have been the difference. Added Snyder: Those last five events, we had some studs, and they did what they were supposed to. Boys Race Ahead The Raiders had success on the boys side as well. Senior Brandon Demers took first place in the 800m run and the 1600m run. His time of 2:01.94 missed the SMAC meet record by just two-tenths of a second. He won the fourlap race by almost five seconds and earned personal records in both of his victories. Last night somebody asked me how badly I wanted to win, Demers said. But it wasnt necessarily about winning. I wanted to do something theyd never forget. This being my last indoor SMAC championship, I knew I wouldnt be able to sleep tonight unless I went out on top. Demers scored 20 points individually with his two Brittany Mattingly also took fourth place in the 55m dash. I thought we did pretty well, Chopticons head coach John Urban said. Weve definitely been better than in previous years. Whats good is our kids are already running times now that are faster than the first week of outdoor practices last year. Shot putter Patrick Moran and long jumper James Countiss each took second place in their respective events to lead the boys team. Basically my big thing is to get this team ready for [the] outdoor [season], Urban said. I dont really see this as the peak. Were still building up and building up. The team is growing and the kids are getting a taste of success.

We have a really young team this year with mostly freshman and sophomores, Great Mills head coach Ray

Rice said. I felt pretty good with the overall performance. I always want them to do better.

Brandon Demers of Leonardtown leads a pack of runners in the mile, which he won by three seconds. He also won the 800m run to lead the Raiders to a fifth place SMAC finish.

Hornets Out Stingin

Come

wins. The Raiders added points in the 4x400 and the 4x800m relays to claim fifth place in the meet. Chopticon had a strong showing as well, placing fifth in a three-way tie on the girls side and sixth on boys side. The Braves scored most of their points in relays and advantage of it. He played solid, Peck said of Smith. He controlled the floor well. I thought he played solid defensively. I thought he played smart on the offensive end. He took open shots when they were there, didnt force anything. When I can get all my guys to do that, not rush shots, take them when theyre open, we have good results. The Hornets were patient offensively and took advantage of McDonoughs lapses, according to Peck. I thought their offense seemed to sputter a little bit, we got some fast break points and we were able to get a decent lead and hold on, Peck said. McDonough center Derek Drummond was the top scorer for the Rams with 21 points. He kept McDonough in the game for the first and most of the second quarter, but the Hornets were able to contain him during critical moments

field events. They placed second in the 4x800, third in the 4x400, and fifth in the 4x200. Senior Melinda Carty took fourth in the high jump, freshman Christina Howard placed fourth in the long jump, and sophomore Nicole Lourette claimed third in the triple jump for the Braves. Junior in the game. McDonough is solid inside, Peck said. They had Drummond inside, he had a big game. I thought we had enough weapons to kind of counter what he was going to do. With the win over McDonough, the Hornets are 12-2 on the season and 7-1 in SMAC. Only the Lackey Chargers, who are undefeated, stand ahead of the Hornets in the conference. Great Mills will play at Leonardtown, Northern, Westlake, and La Plata before returning to their gym for the last two regular season games. They will play Chopticon Feb. 16 and Lackey Feb. 20. Without being clich about itIf we focus on our upcoming opponent, if we focus on them as opposed to looking down the line, Peck said. I think we can really control our destiny.

Great Mills saw some success as well. The Hornets recorded several top finishes in the meet, including a third place finish by sophomore Lauren Jones in the high jump and a third place finish Photo by Andrew Knowlton in the girls shot put by sophomore Melanie Jolessa Nelson of Great Mills competes in the long jump for the Hornets. She placed seventh in the event. Nation.

Hornets
Continued from page B-1 The second and third quarters belonged to the Hornets, as they charged to a commanding 21-point lead. Brown was one of the workhorses responsible for that lead, dropping 25 points in the game, including two threes in the third quarter. After we came out going back and forth, coach just told us to settle down and to get back to playing our own ball, Smith said. Once everybody got back together, we just settled down and did what we know how to do. Smith also had a strong third quarter, exploding for 13 of his 21 total points. I came out looking forward to scoring, Smith said. When we play a better team, I feel like our team needs me more. I felt good all day, in warm-ups and shoot-around, so I just came out and took

Hawks
Continued from page B-1 bin had her first career double-double in the game with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Guard Megan Uglik finished the game with 11 points while forward Allie Scott scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds. On Jan. 25, the Seahawks pulled off a 43-39 victory over Catholic University in a game that didnt see a basket scored until 6:30 minutes had expired. Scott was the first to put points on the board for either team. She also scored the last two points of the half, but the Seahawks hit the locker room down 16-12. Ive never played in a game that was so low-scoring, said Scott, who ended up with 12 points on the night. Both teams played good defense and we couldnt really make a shot. Saint Marys was a different team in the second half. After forward Lisa Daciek scored a layup to tie the game at 27, Saint-Aubin knocked down a three pointer to take the lead. Down the stretch, the Seahawks made four foul shots in a row to seal the win. The Seahawks shot well from the charity stripe all night, going 16-22. They also out-rebounded the Cardinals 45-38.

It was a close game last time at Catholic and they beat us, so we wanted some revenge against them, Scott said. The win gives the Seahawks their first home conference win of the season, which was very much needed, according to Scott. We had a good run in the beginning of the season, she added. So were ready to start that up again. Homecourt advantage has

been beneficial for the Seahawks, Scott said. We love it when they come, she said of the Seahawk fans. Theres definitely a different level of energy when theyre here. After starting the season 3-0, the Seahawks (8-9, 3-6 CAC) lost four in a row and have struggled to get back over the .500 mark since. They have six games remaining (four at home) before entering the playoffs.

Win Big
Continued from page B-1 agrees with Kosewicz. I believe we still would have won because we were really determined to win this, he said. The Hornets proved their determination in the next two matches. Taylor Hubbard won a close one at 130, which was followed by Kosewiczs pin at 135. Before the match, three Great Mills seniors were recognized for their leadership and effort. Among them were Dickerson, Jake Ackerman, and Dustin Knapp. The fact that the Hornets only recognized three seniors just goes to show how young the squad is. This leaves high hopes in they eyes of Griffith and his wrestlers. According to Kosewicz, the guidance of his coaches and older teammates has made him a better wrestler and will help the team in future years. Im a first year [wrestler], and I train with them, he said of his veteran teammates. They show me how to do stuff. And even though theyre hard on me, theyve shown me and Ive gotten better because of them.

Allie Scott led the Seahawks in scoring against Catholic University with 12 points. The Lady Hawks upset the Cardinals but lost to Marymount two nights later.

But before the Hornets start thinking too much about next year, Griffith says he will focus on the upcoming SMAC championships. Id like to see some guys place, he said. Weve got three or four guys who have placed in tournaments this year, so were looking forward to them doing the same thing, and getting some points that will help us get them there and hopefully qualify for States.

Seahawks
Continued from page B- CACs top-ranked team, but results were unavailable at press time. We play well at home, Harney said. We like our gym. So were excited about the opportunity to knock off another first place team. Weve been the spoiler all year long so were trying to continue doing that and get some momentum going into the playoffs.
