Registration
Registration is the mandatory pre-requisite for a student to be eligible to take courses in a semester.
At the beginning of autumn and spring semesters, every student needs to register for the courses.
Tentative academic calendar for the semesters are as follows:
1. Autumn: Third/fourth/final week of July - Fourth/final week of November
2. Spring: First week of January - Fourth/final week of April
3. Summer: First week of May - Third/fourth week of July
During summer semester, no course will, generally, be offered.
Semester-wise registration
For the registration, one should know what are the courses to be running in that semester and which
courses the student needs to take.
1. It is the responsibility of the student to know the exact requirements and accordingly, one needs to
register.
2. Students are advised to consult the assigned FA before registering for the courses. There will be one
departmental FA for a batch of students of same year.
3. It is the responsibility of the students to approach their respective FA along with the SGRs so to get
advised by the FA appropriately.
4. It is the student who has to ensure that s/he have registered the courses as per the department and
institute specified norms.
All the registration processes and subsequent modifications, if required, are generally needed to be
carried out through on-line.
Pre-requisites for the registration are as follows:
1. All institute, library, hostel and mess dues are to be cleared.
2. All course feedbacks of the previous semester are to be submitted on-line beforehand.
6
Change of department
IIT Jammu, after a lot of deliberations considering the advantages as well as the dis-advantages
associated with the change of department and because of its focus on interdisciplinary course
curriculum, has decided not to offer the change of department.
Introduction to credit/s and grade point/s associated with a course and the significance
A student has to take various courses to complete the degree requirements. There will be credit/s
associated with all courses, but the grade point/s might or might not be associated with the courses
depending on the category of the course.
In the curriculum, there are two following category of courses which are categorised in terms of
possibility of earning credits and grade points:
1. Credit earning courses
2. Grade point earning courses
A course from which a student will be able to earn credit/s only, but not the grade point/s, will be termed,
henceforth, as credit earning course (CEC). To earn credit/s from a CEC, a student has to complete the
course by successfully obtaining the satisfactory grade in that CEC, and by virtue of that, the student will
be able to earn the credit/s allotted with that CEC. In case the satisfactory grade is not obtained, it is
considered that the particular CEC is not completed by that student, i.e., the student needs to re-register
to the same CEC in future semesters. If the CEC is not an optional course and s/he needs to obtain the
satisfactory grade in that particular CEC, and then only the particular CEC will be completed by that
student.
A course will be termed as grade point earning course (GPEC) if a student can earn credit/s as well as
grade points from a course. To earn grade points from a GPEC, a student has to complete the course by
successfully obtaining the minimum passing grade in that particular course. In case the minimum
passing grade is not obtained, it is considered that the particular GPEC is not completed by that student,
i.e., the student needs to re-register to the same GPEC in future semesters if the GPEC is not an
optional course and s/he needs to obtain the minimum passing grade in that GPEC, and then only the
particular GPEC will be completed by that student. It is worth to notice that by completing, i.e., by
obtaining the minimum passing grade in a GPEC, the student will be able to earn the credit/s allotted
with that particular GPEC in addition of earning the grade points. How muchgrade points a student would
be able to earn from a GPEC depends on the performance of the student in that GPEC and what grade
is assigned to the student by the CC of the particular GPEC.
7
Attendance policy
Students are requested to attend all the classes. However, 75 % attendance is mandatory to pass a

II. Here is the glimpse of selected Instruments/Equipments in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory:
1. Rainfall Simulator
-Rainfall simulator has features suitable for studying fluvial geomorphology which include: rainfall/runoff
hydrographs for catchment areas of varying permeability; the abstraction of groundwater by wells, both with
and without surface recharge from rainfall; the formation of river features and unique to this apparatus, fluvial
mechanics.
-The unit comprises a sand tank, made of stainless steel, measuring 2 x 1 metre. Water may be input to the
sand tank from spray nozzles located above the tank (simulating rainfall) from an inlet tank simulating a river
flow or from two French drains buried in the sand at either end of the tank. The water is output either from an
outlet tank and flow measurement system located at the end of the main sand tank, from one or both of the two
wells located in the tank, or from one or both of the French drains. A large plastic sump tank is located under
the sand tank.
-Groundwater table levels (phreatic surface) are measured using 20 tapping points in the sand tank, configured
in a cruciform pattern, and displayed on a manometer bank.
-Eight spray nozzles are mounted on a gantry above the sand tank, positioned to give an even distribution
across the tank surface. The height of the gantry can be easily adjusted. Each nozzle has an associated on/off
valve, allowing a wide variety of moving rainfall patterns to be simulated.
-Two variable area flowmeters with integral adjusting valves are used to control and measure the various flows
into the tank. The use of self-sealing quick-release fittings allows the system to be configured in a variety of
different ways, enabling a wide range of demonstrations.
-The outlet tank is located at the end of the sand tank and is used for hydrographs, runoff, and river formation
demonstrations. A stepped height weir is used to adjust the outlet conditions. When performing water table
demonstrations this stepped weir is replaced with a sealing plate. The outlet tank comprises a sand trap, a
water stilling system, and a flow measurement device. The flow measurement is performed by measuring the
height of the water flowing over the outlet weir, using a direct reading inclined manometer.
-The sand trap is configured to allow the sediment to be collected in a sieve. In this way, the amount of
sediment collected over a period of time can be measured.

1) Computational Biology and Biophysics Laboratory :
Protein molecules carry out a vast array of biological functions. Indeed, almost every cellular process,
from genome regulation to energy metabolism, requires a unique set of proteins with their precise
concentration in a cell. Understanding the details of protein synthesis and its regulation remains one of
the fundamental questions of genetics and evolutionary cell biology. In this lab, the group studies this by
integrating the theoretical and computational models of protein synthesis with high throughput
sequencing data. Dr. Ajeet Kumar Sharma is leading the group.
The Solar research group is working on working on Photothermal Water Steaming for Water Purification.
The group is interested in applications such as Fabrication of solar cells, Fabrication, and
Characterization of Organic Field-Effect Transistors for hazardous Gas Sensors, and Tunable Resistive
switching Memory devices. Dr. Ashok Bera is leading this group.

6) Soft Matter Physics Laboratory :
The group’s research focuses on studying collective dynamics in active matter systems. Active matter is
an ensemble of agents with each agent consuming energy (either from surroundings or from within) to
carry out various tasks and thus remains out of equilibrium at all times. Usually, the
interaction/communication among the "active" agents results in interesting collective dynamics and these
dynamics are usually not observed at a single agent level. Furthermore, the underlying causes for these
overall dynamics are diverse. Common examples of active matter are bird flocks, fish schools, bacterial
colonies, etc. Several experimental, theoretical and computational studies aim to understand these
dynamics from basic principles. The researchers use both experimental and computational techniques to
understand the collective dynamics in these systems. For experimental work, the group studies the
collective dynamics of Marangoni surfers (or agents) on the surface of water, whose propulsion is
induced by surface tension gradients. For computational work, the group studies the collective dynamics
of active, passive particle mixtures using Dissipative Particle Dynamics, a commonly used mesoscopic
method for simulating soft matter systems
