“Create Your Own Country”

Now that we have learned about some of the features of the Government of Australia, it is your
task to create your own country and design a government to run it. You may follow the features
of democracy or you may be innovative and come up with something new. There will be four
parts to this project which you will complete over the rest of the term.

You can choose how to present your project. You may present it as a poster, google slides,
model, triarama, pamphlet or brochure or get really creative and make an iMovie.

Week 1 – Create your Country:

● Give your country a name and put it as the title.

● Draw or create the national flag
● Draw or create a map of your country. Label the capital, states, regions, etc.
● Provide a chart of facts. You may want to be creative and include: population, language
spoken, currency, area of the country, length of the coastline, climate, tallest mountain.
● Provide a list of any historic details that would be interesting about your country. For
example: year it was created, first leader, etc.

Week 2 - Determine your government’s structure:

What type of government system does your country use? List the following 5 characteristics of your
government:
1. How do leaders become leaders in your country?
2. Is your government: a democracy, a republic, a dictatorship...?
3. How many levels of government are there?
4. How are the people’s views taken into account?
5. How does the government raise money?
Extension: List 3 more interesting characteristics or facts about your government.
Explain what is one benefit of your country’s government?
Explain what is one drawback of your county’s government?

Week 3 - Create a Constitution:

● List the 5 most important Laws in your country.

● List the types of consequences for breaking the laws of the country. Are they strict and send
people to jail for a long time, or are there more warnings or fines?
● List the 5 most important Rights for the citizens of your country.

Week 4 - Citizenship:

Describe the process of becoming a citizen of your country:

1. How long do they have to live in the country before they can apply? Can they even apply
while they are living somewhere else?
2. Is there anything they have to do before they can apply? Do they have to have a job or
contribute something to society first?
3. If they have family members, relatives or friends who are citizens, could that help them get
citizenship quicker?
4. Who automatically gets citizenship? Children of citizens? Anyone who wants to be one?
5. Can the government take citizenship away from someone? What could that be a punishment
for?
Extension: Is there a test for becoming a citizen? If so, make a test of 10 questions you would ask
someone.
