Travel Expo
Country Research Project

Name: _______________________________________________

Partner: _____________________________________________

Country: _____________________________________________

Task: You and your partner will be providing a comprehensive overview of a country for our first
annual Travel Expo. After researching specific topics during class and at home using the Internet
and print resources, your group will be designing and creating a final project to demonstrate your
country’s uniqueness.

Process: Work through the following steps to complete your project on time.

1. Use the list provided (page 6) to select and agree upon a country to research (once a
country has been selected, it is no longer available to other groups). If you would like a
country not on the list you will need to get teacher approval. Remember, not all countries
are tourist destinations but that does not make them any less important.

2. Between you and your partner, you need to equally distribute the following roles. Below is
a list of four roles that need to be fulfilled, followed by a description of the research that
accompanies the role. All roles must be completed!!

 Historian
o Print one color picture of your country’s flag and/or seal
 You will use this picture, along with art materials, to create a
model of the flag
 This model will be included in your final project
o What type of government rules your country? Who are the current
political leaders?
o Provide the names of 3 famous people who were born in your country
and a brief description of their accomplishments (2 – 3 sentences each)
o Are any major conflicts happening in your country at this time? If so, give
a brief description of what is happening. If not, describe a conflict that
happened in your country in the past (3 – 5 sentences)
o What natural disasters have occurred in your country over the past
several decades? These could include but are not limited to: avalanches,
tsunamis, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.

2
 Geographer
o Print one color picture of your country
 You will use this picture to create an illustrated map of your
country
 Your map must include locations and labels for the capital, major
bodies of water, bordering nations, and any combination of the
following three items: airports, national monuments, historical
sights, areas of interest, and/or major cities
 This map will be included in your final project
o Topographical description of your country
 What is your country made out of? Mountains? Deserts? Plains?
Plateaus? Grasslands? Jungles?
o What is the average climate of your country?
o What is the population of your country?
o How does the size of your country compare to that of the United States
(9,826, 630 km2)? How much bigger or smaller is your country?
o Where is your country located on the globe?

 Culture
o List the names of 4 native food dishes
o What types of music are popular in your country? (Jazz, Classical, Reggae,
Pop, etc.)
 Do not name specific musicians or bands!!!
o Is there a traditional type of dress and/or article of clothing in your
country?
 If so, print one picture to be included in your final project
o Include ten interesting facts about your country

** Extra credit will be given to groups that bring in a native food dish, provide
music during the expo, and/or dress up!!

 Travel Agent
o When using travel websites to plan your vacation, use the airport code for
Boston (BOS) and the dates July 20, 2014 – July 27, 2014. You can use the
airline and hotel of your choice.
 What is the cost of transportation to your country? What is the
name of the airline along with the departing and arriving airports?
 What is the cost of lodging? What is the name of the
hotel/motel/resort you are using?
 What language(s) is spoken in your country?
 What currency is used in your country? How does this compare to
the USD (United States Dollar)? Think about the conversion rate…

3
 What major religions are practiced in your country
* Your group can print three additional images to include in your final project
**Remember, you can also include your own drawings/images
*** All members of your group must be able to locate your country on a map and name the
surrounding countries if asked

3. Once all roles have been distributed, you will start researching your country by using print
materials and the Internet to begin compiling all of the information and images that they
are responsible for.
4. Once all information is collected, you will compile the information and complete the final
project. It is your responsibility as a group to decide what the most important information
is. You can refer to the attached grading rubric to ensure that you have all of the necessary
components.

Final Project

The final project is a way for your group to display the most
important information about your country and it can take a
variety of forms. The minimum requirement for this project is
that you complete a poster board to accompany your country’s
flag and map. However, I would like for you to be as creative as
possible and come up with an original idea for your project.
Examples of these might include, but are not limited to, the
following: a deck of playing cards, country in a box, tri-fold
poster, travel brochure, video commercial, newspaper travel
article, etc. Just be sure that your project includes the most
important information from your research.

You will be receiving individual grades for this project. Any work
you do or information you collect will be turned in for a grade.
