How the Lesson Will Flow:

Day 1:
(1) Class will become familiar with the national geographic website. (5 minutes)
http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/places/find/
Navigate the site to show students the following: how to locate various
countries by continent, locating information, viewing videos, viewing maps,
and getting back to the main page.
(2) Next, will show students how to navigate the website for each country. (5
minutes) Visit two countries this day: Ireland and Mexico. Be sure to show
students how to find information specific for each topic: Nature, Geography,
People & Culture, Government & Economy, Capital, and Official Language.
(3) Students will have a sample passport page. (20 minutes) Fill out this
information together for the first one. Review plagiarism and that facts
should be put into your own words and not copied from the site.
(4) The second example, Let the students try on their own. (20 minutes) Read
aloud one section (ie: Geography) and allow students to find and write down
their own fact. Allow 2 or 3 students to share.
(5) Discuss how the two countries are alike and how they are different from the
United States, based on information found out on this days journey. (10
minutes)
Day 2:
(1) Share the voki with the class mission (5 minutes): President Obama has
asked our class how our country is the same and different from other
countries around the world. He has given each of you a free passport and the

chance to visit various countries around the world to help him. Do you think
you could help him out?

(I will be switching schools so one of the two links above should work. If not,
go to www.voki.com , create your own account, and then create a Barack
Obama voki with the sentences above.)
(2) Pass out and review how to use the passports. (5 minutes) Remind students
to write down one fact for each category. Advise students to read the section
first and then pick one fact and write it in their own words.
(3) Students will visit 4-5 places, filling out their passports with each place they
visit. Students who finish early can visit more than 5 places and/or help
others who are struggling. The teacher should also be available for students
who are struggling. (40 minutes)
(4) In groups, students will discuss ways that different countries are like the
United States and ways that other countries are different from the United
States. Allow, approximately 5 students to share how a specific country is
similar and 5 students to share how a specific country is different than the
United States. (10 minutes)

Day 3:

(1) Go to https://maps.google.com/
Have each person sign into their personal or a class google account. (5
minutes)
(2) Together, pin Raleigh, North Carolina (or your own town) and write one
fact about Raleigh. This will help students practice pinning the places they
were able to visit.
*Students who need extra support can just post the name of the place on
their map. If time allows, they can work on adding one fact to one or two
places. (10 minutes)
(3) Students will then pin the places they visited by using their passports.
Additionally, each student should write at least one fact about each place
they visited. (30 minutes)
*Students who finish early can pin places that they have visited in the past.
If teacher is available to help, show them how to post pictures. Additionally,
students with extra time could go back and include more information about
each country.
(4) Allow a few students to share their google maps. (15 minutes)

Assessment:
Students will be formally assessed using the rubric below. Informal assessments can also
be noted in anecdotal format on a notepad as the teacher facilitates learning through each
days lesson. Using the passport, google map, anecdotal records, and the rubric, teacher
should have enough information to determine whether the student has mastered the
objective.

Sources for the Lesson: This lesson was created by me, Ashley Ward. I got the idea to
use a google map in the lesson from my experience creating a google map of my journey
in England through our study abroad experience.
