FOOD TESTS

PRE-ASSESSMENT:
1. Butter is a good source of …………….
2. …………………… is a complex carbohydrate present in potatoes.
3. Why do we need to test food?
4. If a food sample tested with Iodine solution turns blue-black, what
does this
indicate?
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
To identify the major components of food (carbohydrates, proteins and
fats, ) through food tests.
Keywords:
• Food tests
• Iodine solution
• Biuret reagent

TESTING FOOD:
Scientists use food tests to find out which nutrients are in a food
product.

A different chemical test exists for each type of nutrient. For most food
tests, you we need a solution of the food. To prepare a food solution we
must crush the food and then mix it with distilled water.
POST-ASSESSMENT:

CRITICAL THINKING:
After conducting the iodine test, a cereal sample turned blue-
black, indicating the presence of starch. If another sample of the
same cereal did not show this color change, what could be the
reason for this discrepancy?
