PARAGRAPH

What is a Paragraph?
A paragraph is a group of related sentences that focus on a single main idea. A well-structured
paragraph includes a topic sentence (introduces the main idea), supporting sentences (develop
and explain the main idea), and a concluding sentence (summarizes or provides a transition).
In addition to structure, effective paragraphs often combine general truths (facts accepted as
universally true) with opinions (personal views) to create a balanced argument or discussion.
Key Elements of a Paragraph

1. Topic Sentence
Introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
It should be clear and directly related to the supporting details.
Example:
"Regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle."

2. Main Idea
This is the central focus of the paragraph, directly aligned with the topic sentence.
The supporting sentences must develop and explain this idea.

3. Supporting Sentences
Provide evidence, examples, explanations, or opinions to support the topic sentence and main
idea.
Aim to have at least 2-3 supporting sentences.
Example:
"Exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, improving overall physical health. It also releases
endorphins, which enhance mental well-being. Furthermore, regular physical activity can reduce
the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease."

4. Concluding Sentence
Summarizes the main idea or links it to the next paragraph.
Example:
"Therefore, engaging in regular exercise is vital for a healthy and balanced life."

General Truths vs. Opinions in Paragraphs

General Truths
These are statements based on widely accepted facts or universal truths.
Example:
"Water is essential for human survival because it regulates body temperature and supports vital
functions."

Opinions
These are personal beliefs or interpretations based on individual perspectives.
Example:
"I believe drinking warm water in the morning is the best way to start the day because it
improves digestion."
Combination Example:
"Drinking water is vital for survival because it hydrates the body and supports vital functions. In
my opinion, warm water is better than cold water as it promotes better digestion and soothes the
stomach."

knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life and contributes to economic growth. Research
