UNDERSTANDING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the flow of blood against your artery walls is elevated. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated (healthy) blood from the heart to the rest of your body, whilst Veins are blood vessels that carry deoxygenated (unhealthy) blood from the body back to the heart. Measurement of the force of flow exerted on the arterial wall is known as blood pressure. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The narrower your arteries become as compared with the more blood your heart pumps, the higher your blood pressure. Like air in a tire, blood fills arteries to a certain capacity. Just as too much air pressure can damage a tire, high blood pressure can threaten the health of your arteries and lead to serious conditions.

Blood pressure readings are given as two numbers:-a top number called the systolic blood pressure and -a bottom number called the diastolic blood pressure. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures are the pressures in the arteries when the heart is contracting and relaxing respectively. Normal blood pressure is at or lower that 120/80 most of the time, although a range of values is known to be acceptable. Blood pressures above this are classified as prehypertension or hypertension. Its natural for your blood pressure to vary with changes in activity, sleep or emotional state. However, when blood pressure is persistently above 140/90; it is referred to as High Blood Pressure or Hypertension. You can live with a high blood pressure for many years without developing any symptoms.

Consistently high blood pressure forces your heart to work far beyond its capacity. By means of injuring blood vessels and promoting hardening of the arteries, uncontrolled blood pressure compromises blood supply to most of your vital organs such as brain, heart, kidneys and eyes. Hence, predisposing to serious health problems; heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and blindness.

High blood pressure typically develops over many years, and it affects many people. Unfortunately, high blood pressure is rarely detected unless frequent checks are done. However, with early detection, you can work with your doctor to control it and curb these complications that could result from poor management. 2

Why bother with tested glasses for driving, simply get a prescription windshield! MISTAKE IN ABILITY A doctor has come to see one of his patients in a hospital. The patient has had major surgery to both of his hands. "Doctor," says the man excitedly and dramatically holds up his heavily bandaged hands. "Will I be able to play the piano when these bandages come off?" "I don't see why not," replies the doctor. "That's funny," says the man. "I wasn't able to play it before."
