edu Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 1:00-2:00 and any other time that I am in the office or by appointment. Required Text: Business Law: The Ethical, Global and E-Commerce Environment, 14th edition, Mallor et. al. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY The Universitys Code of Academic Integrity is designed to ensure that the principles of academic honesty and integrity are upheld. All students are expected to adhere to this Code. The Smith School does not tolerate academic dishonesty. All acts of academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of this code. Please visit the following website for more information on the Universitys Code of Academic Integrity: http://www.inform.umd.edu/Campusinfo/Departments/JPO/Acinteg/code_acinteg2a.html On each Exam or assignment you will be asked to write out and sign the following pledge: I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on this exam. SPECIAL NEEDS: Any student with special needs should bring this to the attention of the instructor as soon as possible, but not later than the second week of class. EXAMS There will be three hourly exams and a final. The exams will be objective. The hourly exams will be held during the scheduled class time. THE FIRST EXAM WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2012. THE SECOND EXAM WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4th AND THE THIRD EXAM WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY MAY 7TH . The FINAL EXAMINATION will be held as designated in the Schedule of Classes. The FINAL EXAMINATION IS CUMULATIVE. In general, there will be no make-up exams in the absence of a significant medical reason or serious personal problem, which results in a previously approved absence from the exam by the instructor. Over the years I have noted that the health of grandparents, in particular, tends to suffer at exam time. You might want to inform your grandparents of the dates of your exams so that they will take extra care of their health during that period in order that you do not have to miss an exam on their account. (If you don't have any grandparents, I am sorry. You may substitute any convenient next of kin in the preceding statement.)

CLASS PARTICIPATION Class participation is mandatory and will be part of the student's grade. Failure to participate in a satisfactory manner will result in a reduction of at least one letter grade from the grade earned on the hourly and final exams. TEXT COVERAGE The course will cover the following text chapters: Chapter 1. The Nature of Law 2. Resolution of Private Disputes 3. Business and the Constitution 6. Intentional Torts 7. Negligence and Strict Liability 20. Product Liability 9. Introduction to Contracts 10. The Agreement: Offer 11. The Agreement: Acceptance 12. Consideration 13. Reality of Consent 14. Capacity to Contract 15. Illegality 16. Writing (Lecture only) 17. Rights of Third Parties (Lecture only) 18. Performance and Remedies (Lecture only 19. Formation and Terms of Sales Contracts 23. Personal Property and Bailments (Lecture on selected parts only) 24. Real Property (Lecture on selected parts only) Brief lecture on agency liability how to sign a contract. GRADE The final grade will be determined by the grades on the hourly tests, final exam and class participation. Class participation counts about 10% but I do introduce a certain amount of judgement and subjectivity in determining the final grade. For example, in cases of outstanding participation (or horrible participation) it may be weighted more heavily. BRIEFING A CASE Part of your grade will depend on explaining cases in class. It will be helpful to you if you learn to brief the cases using the following outline: (1) Facts; (2) Legal Issue Presented; (3) Decision; (4) Reason

MISCELLANEOUS If during the course of the semester you encounter a serious problem with the course or significant problems of some other nature, see me immediately. It does no good to wait until exam grades are in as there is little I can do at that time. Students are expected to extract principles of law from the cases. In general, with the exception of the lecture material on Constitutional Law, you are not expected to memorize the names or facts of individual cases. If you have a cell phone or a beeper, turn it off before you come to class.
