OSCE CHECKLIST FOR COLONOSCOPY

01. Identify the patient and explain the procedure to the patient that
carbon dioxide introduced to colon may cause discomfort or
abdominal cramps
02. Get informed consent from the patient
03. Keep patient on low residue diet for 3 days before the procedure
and NPO for 8hours prior to procedure
04. Administer laxative 1-3 days before and cleaning enema the night
before the procedure
05. Provide colonic wash using formula of salt like sodium-sulphate
and polyethylene glycol that is dissolved in 5litres of water and
administer on the previous evening around 9PM.2-5 litres of
solution is to be administered on the morning of the day of the test
between 5am-8am
06. Advice patient to the clear fluids like glucose water or coconut
water along with prepared solution on the day of procedure
07. Avoid premedication unless patient is apprehensive and anxious.
Administer sedatives if ordered
08. Make patient to lie in left lateral position with lower limbs flexed
at hip and knee and buttock at table edge
09. Lubricate the colonoscope and assist the physician in inserting the
colonoscope
10. Instruct the patient to take deep slow breaths while scope as being
inserted
11. Apply pressure to areas of abdomen as directed by physician as he
passes the scope through splenic flexure, ascending colon and
caecum
12. Monitor vital signs, color, warmth, dryness of skin abdominal
distention, level of consciousness and pain tolerance
13. Explain to patient that he may experience abdominal cramps
during procedure
14. Label and transport the specimen to the lab
15, Record the procedure in the nurses notes
