LEMBAR JAWABAN

While I was walking across the campus the other day, I met my old friend John,
whom I hadn't seen since July twentieth. Naturally, we stopped talking to each
other for a few minutes. I asked him how he had done in his classes this
semester. He told methathe had taken a course in English this semester. He said
that he
had completed the elementary course two semesters before, and by next
semester, he was ready took the most difficult English course offered at this
school. "Until now," he said, "I always took the twelve credits which made up a
minimum full-time program for a foreign student. However, I enrolled for
fifteen or eighteen credits next semester. Then I lost so much time. You see, I am
interested in getting my degree as soon as possible." He also said that he had
asked his advisor for permission to take more credits the next semester, and
his advisor stated that it was quite possible because he had got such good
marks in all of his previous English classes.
"I am glad to hear that you have made such good progress so far," I said to
John. Then I asked him if he would told me the secret of his success Before I
tell you
what he replied, I should explain that John has always been a very diligent
student. Of course, this will be quite obvious to you when you read the next
paragraph. This is what he said: " The secret of my success is simple, Peter. First
of all, I refuse to neglect my studies as some students do. I am always prepared
to recite in class. I never pretend to know those things which I have not studied
yet. I never try to avoid writing the assignments. I never object to studying the
fine
points of English grammar. I am always interested in learning something new
about the English language. I resist goingt to the movies with my friends ifI
recall having a new English lesson to study. I always manage to study atleast two
hours a day I never put off sitting down at my desk with my textbook. I don't
hesitate to stay up until very late to finish my assignments. I don't mind giving
up my time
for such an important thing as learning English. This knowledge will prove to
be invaluable tome in the future. There! Isn't it simple!"
You think that I exaggerate what John says. However, I assure you that it is
the truth, Well, Itold John I wasn't so sure that his method was simple. "But
you
deserve alot of credit for work so hard." I added. "I think you are very smart
to devote all of your time to improving your English now. When you get into
the
advance section next year, you will realize how important it is to have a good
foundation in English." Of course, I encourage John to keep up the good work
too. I gave him the name of the book I had used in my English class several
months
earlier. I suggested that he buy it and read it. Then we discussed what my
teacher had told me about the course John would take the following semester.
After that, I mentioned to John that I was having a little difficulty with my
course in French at the moment. Itold him I had taken the same course the
previous
semester but had failed to pass the final examination. I addmitted to him that I
hadn't studied very hard the last semester. "Now I realize how foolish that was.
I wish that I had been more diligent last semester," I said.
After my explanation, John felt sure that I would have passed my French
course the previous semester if I had studied regularly. Of course, I agreed
with him.
Then Itold him about the conversation I had had with my French teacher, Mr.
Goulet, just before the examination lastsmester. Mr. Goulet had said, "Mr.
Grimm, I know that you haven't touched a book since the time you enrolled in
this murse. Undoubtedly, you will fail this coming examination. You will be
forced to repeat this course next semester. When that time comes, you will do
much better work than you have done up to now!"
After hearing that, John said tome, "Right now, if I were you. I would plan to
study every night. You got good marks when you were in highschool. In fact,
you were considered to be the best student in your class. There's no reason why
you can't get good marks now." I agreed and promised that I would work
harder in
the future.
