NetApp BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache Download and Installation Instructions

What is upgraded
The service image file 30801786.zip provides updates to the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache service partition for the FAS31xx and V31xx series.

Installation prerequisites
To install the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache image, you need to have access to the following devices:

A Web server The serial console connected to the storage controller

Downloading the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache


To download the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache files to your storage controller from the NetApp NOW Web site, complete the following steps. Step Action 1 2 At the storage controller console, enter the following command and path to download the latest service image: appliance_name> software install http://web_server_name/path/30801786.zip web_server_name is the name of the Web server on a network accessible to your storage controller. You will get the following system messages: software: copying to 30801786.zip software: 100% file read from location. software: /etc/software/30801786.zip has been copied. software: installing software, this could take a few minutes... Click on 30801786.zip to download the file from this NOW site to your Web server and save the file as 30801786.zip.

Installing the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache service image


To install the BIOS/Diagnostics/Flash Cache service image on your storage controller, complete the following steps. Step Action

1 At the storage controller console, enter the following command to determine the BIOS and Diagnostics versions on CompactFlash: version -b Make a note of the BIOS and Diagnostics versions from the resulting output. 2 If Flash Cache is installed on this storage controller, enter the following command at the storage controller console to determine the Data ONTAP version: version Make a note of the Data ONTAP version from the resulting output. 3 At the storage controller console, enter the following command to determine the BIOS version on the storage controller and to determine if Flash Cache is installed on the storage controller: sysconfig -a Make a note of the BIOS version from the resulting output. If Flash Cache is installed on the storage controller, you will view the following: slot n: Flash Cache SIZE where SIZE could be 256 GB or 512 GB. 4 At the storage controller console, enter the following command: priv set advanced 5 At the storage controller console, enter the following command to copy the executables to the boot blocks of the storage controller's CompactFlash: download -d Result: The download -d command provides an acknowledgment similar to the following when copying is finished, and then the storage controller prompt appears again: ................................................................... ..................................done [download.requestDone:notice]: Operator requested download completed Note: The copying process can take a few minutes. 6 Verify that you have the right version of BIOS on the CompactFlash card by entering the following command at the Data ONTAP prompt:

version -b Result: The output for firmware states BIOS 4.4.0. 7 If the BIOS version identified in Step 3 is... You have the current firmware. If Flash Cache is installed on this storage controller, halt the storage controller by entering the command halt, and go to step 9. If Flash Cache is not installed on this storage controller, you do not need to proceed any further. 4.3 or earlier 8 Go to Step 8. Then...

At the storage controller console, enter the following command to reboot the storage controller: reboot Result: The new BIOS firmware and Flash Cache firmware will automatically be upgraded when the storage controller reboots. The storage controller will return to Data ONTAP prompt after reboot.

9 If the Data ONTAP version in step 2 is... Then...

At the boot environment prompt, boot the Data ONTAP by entering the following command: 7.3.5 or later... boot_ontap Flash Cache firmware is upgraded automatically. 7.3.4 or earlier... 10 Go to Step 10.

At the boot environment prompt, enter the following command to boot the diagnostics: LOADER>boot_diags The storage controller boots to the diagnostics main menu.

At the diagnostics main menu, enter the following command to enter the extended privilege mode: xtnd yes The extended privilege mode is enabled.

At the diagnostics main menu, enter the following command to enter the Flash Cache submenu:

fcache The Flash Cache submenu is displayed. 13 In the Flash Cache submenu, enter the following to update the FPGA: 61 The FPGA is updated. 14a) Enter the following to exit the Flash Cache submenu: 99 14b) Enter the following command to exit the diagnostics main menu and return to the bootloader: exit
