for her second date with the star at the canal, who, of course, did not
appear. She dreamt of owning a boutique or of becoming an actress or
a manager. She also dreamt of having a glamorous life when in reality,
she was from a lower middle-class family and would probably end up
working in the biscuit factory with her friend.
When she was waiting for Danny Casey to appear at the canal and
he didn't come, she was disappointed and felt that she would have to
live with the burden for the rest of her life. She was sad and felt that
even her brother would be just as disappointed as she was.
Q.2. It is natural for teenagers to have unrealistic dreams. What would you
say are the benefits and disadvantages of such fantasising?
Ans. The most important change in children's lives is when they become
teenagers. They become more aware of the world around them and
develop opinions about everything. Hence, teenagers often have
unrealistic dreams.
Fantasising has both benefits as well as disadvantages. Teenagers
often have goals that they dream about achieving. If they can change
illusions into reality, then it is beneficial that they fantasise as it
will take them closer to accomplishing their aims. In the process,
they will understand the importance of hardwork, perseverance and
determination. Fantasising also boosts creativity and provides an
impetus to effect change for better.
However, there are always two sides to a coin. Like Sophie in the story
Going Places', a teenager's dream world ean take over his/her life to
such an extent that he/she cannot differentiate illusion from actuality.
In such a case, fantasising is detrimental to the growth of teenagers
as they can get stressed and even depressed. This ultimately affects
their mental well-being.

present participle form is generally used along with forms of he, (is,

Ans. Sophie was Just another teenager who fantasised about Danny Casey,
the football star and wanted to live a life of glamour. She was from
a lower middle-class family, her father was a labourer, her mother
a housewife and her brother an apprentice mechanic. She dreamt of
leading a glamorous life, but her friend, Jansie, knew that they would
end up working at the biscuit factory.
Sophie's weakness was that she lived in a world of fantasy which she
believed to be true. She fantasised about herself and her brother on
a motorcycle wearing new clothes and being applauded by the world.
She also believed that she had met Danny Casey outside Royce's and
had asked him for an autograph. As neither of them had paper or pen,
Casey had asked to meet her again. Thinking it to be real, she went
to sit alone by the canal to wait for him, but he did not appear. Thus,
Sophie lived in her fantasy world and did not accept the conditions of
the 'real' world.

Or
Teachers always advise their students to dream big. Yet, the same

wrong with Sophie's dreams? (Delhi 2016 Set D
1S
Ans. Sophie lives in a dream world of her own. She fantasises about becoming
a designer or a manager or an actress who owns a boutique on the
side. Her dreams are not practical as she does not have any money or
experience. Like most teenagers, she admires the Irish football star,
Danny Casey. She begins to believe her having met him at
fantasy of
Royce's where he came up and stood next to her. She even goes to wait
by the canal for him and when he does not appear, she is disappointed.
Sophie is not in touch with reality as she believes that her dreams are
actually real. She admires her brother, Geoft, and wants to be a part of
his world. She wants to be able to ride behind him on his motorcycle
with both of them wearing new clothes. She thinks that the world
wOuld be waiting for them and would greet them with applause. Thus,
Sophie lived in her fantasy world, forgetting life as it actually was.
Q.7. Every teenager
Every teenage must dream big. Yet the dream should also be rooted
o the ground. Write a character sketch of Sophie in the light of this
remark. (OD Comptt. 2015 Set D
Ans. Sophie lives in a world that is made entirely in her own imagination
on.
She believes what she fantasises about. She admires her brother Geo
and wants to be free to see other places and meet interesting peonla
just as she thinks he does. She ignores her father's advice who tell
her to be careful as he is sure she will get into trouble one day because
use
of her lies and wild stories.
Although her brother warns her about meeting Danny Casey, she goes
to her favourite spot by the canal to wait for him. He does not appear,
but Sophie still does not come out of her own make-believe world
as she now believes strongly that she had met him outside Royce's,
Sophie's dreams are of a glamorous life although she is from a lower
middle-class family. She believes that she can escape her life and live
one that is filled with allure and sophistication.
Q.8. Every teenager has a hero/heroine to admire. So many times they become
role models for them. What is wrong if Sophie fantasises about Danny
Casey and is ambitious in life? (OD 2016 Set )
Or
Unrealistic dreams often lead to a great deal of unhappiness. Justify the
statement on the basis of the story "Going Places'.
(CBSE Sample Paper 2018)
Ans. There is nothing wrong in being ambitious but the goals should always
be practical. Most goals are achieved as a result of hard work and
determination. However, Sophie dreams of becoming an actress who
owns a boutique on the side, or of becoming a manager or a designer.
She is still young and has no experience. To own a boutique or become
a designer like Mary Quant requires money for investment which her

family, a lower middle-class one, did not have.

All teenagers hero worship a role model or a celebrity and Sophie was
no exception. However, Sophie really believed that she had met the
popular Irish football star, Danny Casey, and that he had asked her
to meet him again. Since she lived in a world of fantasy, she went to
her favorite spot by the canal to wait for the star who did not come
