A new Pagasa from French Guiana, Pagasa kmenti n. sp. (Heteroptera: Nabidae: Prostemmatinae)
MANUEL BAENA1

Abstract Pagasa kmenti n. sp. is described from French Guiana. Photographs and comparative notes with its closest relative, Pagasa luteiceps (W ALKER, 1873), are provided. Key Words Heteroptera, Nabidae, Pagasa, new species, French Guiana. Kurzfassung Pagasa kmenti n. sp. (Nabidae) wird nach einem aus Franzsisch Guayana beschrieben und mit Pagasa luteiceps (W ALKER, 1873), einer ihr nahestehenden Art, verglichen. Introduction Pagasa STL, 1862 is a New World genus of the subfamily Prostemmatinae that is distributed from southern Canada to Argentina. The species from Central and South America have recently been revised by KERZHNER & KONSTANTINOV (2008). 26 species are currently known, 22 in Central and South America (KERZHNER & KONSTANTINOV, 2008) and 7 in America north of Mexico (KERZHNER & HENRY, 2008). A new species from French Guiana is described here.

Pagasa kmenti n. sp. (Fig. 1 = Abb. 21) Head, antennae, rostrum and legs yellow; eyes brown. Pronotum black and yellow; fore margin with a triangular yellow spot that does not reach the middle of the lobe, hind margin slightly lighter. Scutellum yellow with two darks pits on the disc; tip rounded. Hemelytra yellow brown with a yellowish white spot at the level of the cuneal fracture that reaches the lateral edge; distal end of the mesocorium lighter with a falcate spot. Lighter spots of both endocorium and excocorium are separated by the darkened distal end of the vein Cu. Corial and claval veins paler than the surroundings areas. Rows of points of clavus and endocorium dark. Shiny lateral stripe of corium reaching the cuneal fracture. Membrane greyish with a black area at the base of the three cells and in the inner border. Hemelytra with sparse, black, short and semierect hairs, more dense in the distal end. Prosternum and mesosternum brownish black, metasternum yellow brown. Abdominal sternites brownish black, yellow in the connexivum. Structure: Body length 6.74, width 3.33. Head length 1.26, width 1.16, width of eye 0.35, width of vertex 0.45. Length of antennal segments 0.50, 0.25, 1.14, IV and V lost. Rostrum reaching middle of fore coxae; segment 2 distinctly not surpassing hind margin of eyes, segment 3 surpassing the anterior border of the pronotum and reaching the middle of fore, segment 4 reaching near the hind border of metasternum; length of segments 0.45, 1.01, 1.01, 0.43. Pronotum length 1.77, width 2.42. Hemelytra surpassing apex of abdomen. Fore femur thickened with convex ventral margin, with a stripe of three rows of black teeth, those of the hind row about 3 times as long as the others. Fore tibia strongly curved, its thickened part occupying about of its length, ventral margin of fore and hind sides unequally curved and visible in anterior view. Middle and hind femur without small black teeth. Trochanters without minute black teeth. Length of femora 2.02, 1.89, 2.52. Length of tibiae 1.51, 1.94, 2.93. Width of fore femur 0.76, of fore tibia 0.35. Length of fossula spongiosa, 0.38. All measurements are given in mm.

D i s c u s i o n: P. kmenti is close to P. luteiceps (W ALKER, 1873) due to the structure of the fore tibia and the lack of minute teeth in the middle and hind femora. The two species may be distinguished from each other by the different male genitalia and hemelytral pattern (Figs. 1, 2 = Abb. 21, 22). In the new species there is a conspicuous white spot in the corium and the basal region of the membrane is darkened with black/brown. P. kmenti is also slightly longer (6.74) than P. luteiceps (5.8-6.3). Pagasa luteiceps (W ALKER) has a wide distribution ranging from Mexico to Sao Paulo in Brazil. The differences in male genitalia and hemelytral pattern in the specimens studied by KERZHNER & KONSTANTINOV (2008) are attributed by them to intraspecific variability. After having studied a larger number of specimens, it is necessary in my opinion to revise this view. E t y m o l o g y: The new species is named after my Czech colleague PETR KMENT for his help and in recognition of his work in the study of Heteroptera. Acknowledgements The author wishes to show his gratitude to Dr. PETR KMENT (Prague) for the photograph of Pagasa luteiceps that figures in this paper. Thanks very much also to KEITH BENSUSAN (Gibraltar), who kindly revised the language of the manuscript.
