Special Section on Antennas for RF Energy Harvesting and Wireless Power Transfer Applications
Submission deadline: 31 October 2022
Aims & Scope: Advancements in the field of wireless technologies have led to the development of various wireless technologies such as internet
of things (IoT), mobile/handheld, 5G systems, RFID Tags, wearable/portable devices, various low powered sensors, which demand efficient
electronic devices for their effective implementation. These technologies involve sensors that are deployed at remote places with the capacity of
interacting with each other through wireless media. However, it is difficult to provide endless power to these devices with conventional approaches
like by a battery or through wired cables. Also, the lifetime of the battery is limited, so that frequent replacements of the battery are needed. This
increases the additional expenditure on the system and may cause environmental pollution. Sometimes, replacing the battery placed at an
inaccessible place, becomes impossible. To overcome these limitations, RF energy harvesting (RFEH) and wireless power transfer (WPT) techniques
have grabbed significant attention globally. The antenna is an integral part of both RFEH and WPT systems and is used for converting ambient
electromagnetic radiation into a usable form of electrical direct current (DC). This special section is accepting novel and unpublished works on
antenna technologies or metasurface-based antenna designs for RFEH and/or WPT applications.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
• Modeling and characterization of antennas for harvesting applications
• 3-D antennas for wireless energy harvesting/power transfer systems
• Multi-polarized/multi-band antennas for RFEH/WPT applications
• Designing of high efficiency and low-powered rectifier circuits
• Antenna with higher order harmonic attenuating bandpass filter designs
• Antenna designs for self-powered wearable sensors using RFEH
• Antenna in packaging designs for RFEH and WPT applications
• Implantable antenna designs for biomedical devices
• Multi-layered antenna with rectifier designs for RFEH system
• Antenna designs for millimeter-wave/5G energy harvesting system designs
• Multi-band antenna/rectenna system designs in cognitive radio systems for
RFEH
• New design topologies for high performance rectenna (antenna with
rectifier) systems
• Miniaturized array antenna configurations and beam-steering topologies for
high gain and efficient rectenna systems
• Flexible and wearable antennas (rectenna systems) for lightweight and portable wireless sensor networks
• Machine Learning for modeling of antenna/rectenna designs
• Evolutionary algorithms for optimization of antenna/rectenna designs and performance efficiencies
• Antenna designs with solar panel for hybrid energy harvesting systems
• Compact metamaterial/metasurface-based antenna designs for performance enhancement of rectenna systems

The review process of each Special Section paper starts upon submission and accepted papers immediately appear on IEEE Xplore®, forming
an expanding collection of reference material on emerging topics in Antennas and Propagation.
Integrated with IEEE DataPort & Code Ocean: Enabling researchers to store, share, access, manage data, and publish their executable code
associated with research articles. Articles published with datasets/code meet the requirements of findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable
(FAIR) research, and receive increased visibility, which is reflected in a higher number of citations.
