Blinkys Random Thoughts

Why Beer was invented....These men are such scholars how could you disagree with them? Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think it is better to drink his beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver." Babe Ruth "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." Lyndon B. Johnson "When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading." Paul Horning "24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not." H. L. Mencken "When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!" George Bernard Shaw "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Benjamin Franklin Remember "I" before "E," except in Budweiser. BATTENKILL TIME TRADERS- What if you could get an hour (or more) of some service you need or want without having to pay cash for it? In exchange youd offer an hour (or more) of something youre good at and like to do. The concept is called time banking, or time trading. For every hour of service given to any member a participant earns one hour, which can be traded for one hour of services from any other member of the time bank. Wide-ranging options for exchange are based on the members skills computer help, rototilling, or keeping an elder company for example. Its not barter on a one-to-one basis. The time trading system values everyones contributions equally. Time trading is a simple idea that has powerful ripple effects in building community connections. For additional information, find us at http:// battenkill.timebanks.org/ or on Facebook at Battenkill Time Traders, or call 518-288-5241. Time banking will continue with a Community Social Soup Swap, on Sunday, February 5 from 24 p.m. at Proudfit Hall at 181 Main Street, Salem NY. Bring a crock pot of your favorite soup to share (and earn an hour for your membership), or just come for an afternoon of getting to know your neighbors, enjoying hot soup, and learning a little bit about time banking and how it can improve your life and your neighborhood. Proudfit Hall is handicapped accessible, and there will be a crafts table for children. Everyone is welcome. FAT TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER. UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

The Obama administration says there were 243,000 jobs created in January 2012. Lets see if that is really true: Remember, we are talking about the month when companies go into hibernation because of bad weather and temporary Christmas jobs end. Jobs arent created in January. They are lost. Yet there it is in the Labor Department release Friday, February 3 saying: total non-farm payrolls rose by 243,000 in January and the unemployment rate decreased to 8.3 percent. A lie? Political manipulation? Both. Those 243,000 jobs are the total after seasonal adjustments. The question you should be asking is, whats the un-tamperedwith number before the adjustment? Well the Labor Department reported a loss of 2,689,000 jobs in January. Seasonal adjustments are intended to smooth out holiday bumps like that. But because of the depth and unusual nature of the nations Great Recession, those seasonal adjustments are being skewed. Heres how it works: In January 2010 there was an actual, unadjusted job loss of 2,858,000 jobs. To make it simple, the government computers were expecting a bigger unadjusted loss than the 2,689,000 jobs because last Januarys decline was 2,858,000. Why werent there as many job losses this January? Very likely because the weather throughout the country is a lot milder this year than during the past two Januarys. A loss of jobs that isnt as bad as expected turns into a job gain. Does that mean there really are 243,000 new jobs out there? Absolutely not. Lets say there are rumors in your company that 300 people are going to be laid off. Instead, management decides to fire just 200. Two hundred people, of course, have lost their jobs. But, adjusting it for expectations, 100 people didnt get fired. Using this analogy, the government would say that, on an expectation-adjusted basis, 100 jobs were created. Thats sort of what happened in the January employment report because of seasonal adjustment. Will things be better someday? I wonder. Maybe in our lifetime. DONEGAL BEARD CONTEST: Participants in the 4th Annual Adirondack Donegal Beard Contest are preparing to shave their facial hair New Years Day in anticipation of growing their Donegal Beard for this years contest. $7M PROJECT AT THE RUTLAND SOUTHERN VERMONT REGIONAL AIRPORT. The Rutland Chamber of Commerce has again been actively involved and successful in advocating additional improvements at RSVR Airport. The FAA will be installing mandatory Runway Safety Areas (RSA) on each end of the main runway. The Gulping Gourmand

Periodic Discourse Concerning Dining in Our Area.
We visited Hendersons located at 188 Main Street in Schaghticoke NY. I had lemon peppered chicken, which was quite good. However, it came with box-mix mashed potatoes which tasted like the box. The green beans appeared to be from a can, but they were not bad. The potatoes ruined it for me. From others in the dining area we learned that their pizza is great, and dozens of them went out the door while we ate. Only Okay, but will try again.

Napaul Publishers, Inc. February 10, 2012 www.addigest.com www.addigest.com FOLLOWING THEIR FOOTSTEPS: The Knox Trail Honor Walk During the winter of 1775 1776, Colonel Henry Knox left Boston, marched to New Yorks Fort Ticonderoga, andwith a team of men and oxenhauled more than 50 tons of cannons and other arms back to Bostons Dorchester Heights. The threat of these cannons firing on British ships in Boston Harbor led to the British evacuation of Boston, a major victory for the fledging Continental Army. In 1926, New York and Massachusetts began installing commemorative markers that traced the so-called Knox Trail at locations in the two states. In April of 2012, staff members of Patriots of the American Revolution Magazine will walk the Knox Trail.
