ABOUT THE AUTHOR

HER PERSPECTIVE :
Author’s perspective is defined as the way an author looks at
a topic or idea. Sometimes , an author uses particular words
or phases to tell a reader what the feeling and opinion are
about a topic , or they have characters say or do things
within a text that implies their point of view. There are three
ways a author present their perspective: first person (using
’I’,’me’,’my’,’we’), second person (using ‘you’), and third
person (using ‘they’,’he’, or ’she’). Depending on the type of
message that the author wants to convey determines which
perspective the author uses.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE TITLE ON THE
PROJECT

On the face of it looks to be a pretty fitting title for the story. The
phase ”ON THE FACE OF IT” refers to something that appears to be
seems to be or seems to be. Due to how people treat him, Derry
experiences frustration and a loss of self-esteem in the play.
Everyone believed that he was disable and had a nasty scorched
face. Mr. Lamb’s situation was incomparable. In a bomb explosion ,
he had lost one of his legs. Evidently, Derry and Mr. Lamb both had
a physical flaws. However, Mr. Lamb helped Derry learn to accept
his deformity, have confidence in himself, see the positive side of
things. Their physical impairment was obvious to both them and the
rest of the world. But the strength of one’s soul is what matters
most. Mr. Lamb had a sharp mind and dealt with his disability and
loneliness quite well, He played a critical role in helping Derry start
to view himself and his deformity more favourably. The play is
about accepting that things are not always what they seem to be,
i.e., that a physical disability has nothing to do with a person’s
mental fortitude and positive outlook on life.
THEME OF THE STORY
“On the face of it” is a play written by Susan Hill. The theme of the
play revolves around loneliness, isolation, and the human need for
connection. It explores the lives of two character a disfigured,
reclusive man named Mr. Lamb, and a young boy named Derry, who
is dealing with his own struggles. The play delves into the
complexities of human relationships, perceptions, and the impact of
physical and emotional scares on individuals. Through the
interactions between Mr. Lamb and Derry, the play unfolds a
poignant narrative about understanding, empathy, and the
transformative power of genuine human connection. The theme is
worked out through the dialogue, characterization, and the gradual
revelation of each character’s vulnerabilities and strength.
THE TWO DIFFERENT WORLD VIEW
On the Face of It describes the human predicament and different
reactions to it by different people. It's an obvious truth that reader
comes to know i.e both Mr. Lamb and Derry are two different sides
of the same coin. Both suffer from handicap, but the way take look
at it is entirely different. Though Mr. Lamb has lost one of his leg,
"accepts his impairment and reconciles with it. He find beauty in
nature leads a useful life. Even before dying he is able to bring about
a change in Derry.

On the other hand, Derry succumbs to his handicap and lives an

isolated detestable life. With his scarred face he feels neglected and
lonely in this hostile world, but when he meets Mr. Lamb, his
attitude towards life takes a shift.
