ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Susan Hill (born on 5 February 1942-) is an
English author of fiction and non-fiction
works.

Her novels include The Woman in Black, The


Mist in the Mirror & I'm the King of the
Castle.

She was appointed Commander of the Order


of the British Empire in the 2012 Birthday
Honors for her services to literature.

She is known to explore the inner fears and


loneliness. Her works reflect honest
suffering and optimism.

PLOT
INTRODUCTION
The play opens with the introduction of Derry, a
fourteen-year-old boy with a disfigured face who has
just climbed the garden wall and jumped into Mr
Lamb’s garden.

Derry has a half-burnt face due to a childhood


accident, and he lives a solitary life, shunning all
human contact. He is resentful of his condition and
has a negative outlook on life.
Meeting Mr.Lamb
Mr Lamb is an elderly man who has a leg injury and
has a tin leg, he is friendly and sociable and strikes
up a conversation with Derry

Mr Lamb and Derry strike up an unlikely friendship


despite their differences in age and background.

Mr Lamb enjoys Derry’s company and share stories


of wisdom with the boy
Conversation with Mr Lamb
Mr Lamb is a very warm and compassionate person who treats Derry
with kindness and respect

Derry is initially hesitant as he has never been a very sociable person


but eventually gets comfortable and starts talking to Mr lamb about his
bitterness and anger because of his disfigurement.

Mr Lamb has a very positive and optimistic outlook on life and he


shares his philosophy on how people should look beyond appearances
and focus on the goodness in each other.

He tells Derry about his own experiences, of how children call him
“Lamey lamb” because of his tin leg but despite it all, he appreciates
the beauty in the world
A Change in Derry
Derry realizes after talking to Mr Lamb how he has been
unnecessarily dwelling on his physical appearance too
much and thinking about what others say about him too
much.

He starts to see the world in a positive light and newfound


sense of hope, he likes talking to Mr Lamb and being in the
garden

Derry has to leave to inform his mom about his


whereabouts as he is 3 miles away from his home
Conflict and Interference
After Derry’s mom discovers his whereabouts and gets to
know abput his friendship with Mr. Lamb she’s concerned
about the influence Mr. lamb may have on her son.

She forbids Derry to go back to Mr. Lamb, citing societal


prejudices and fears.

Derry expresses his hatred towards his home and runs away
from his house saying that if he does not go to Mr lamb’s
he’ll never be able to go anywhere
Farewell
After returning to Mr. Lamb’s garden Derry finds him lying dead
under an apple tree.
Their parting is marked by a sense of grief and loss, and even if
they knew each other for a very short period of time, Mr Lamb
played a very important role in Derry’s life
The story ends on a poignant note as Derry reflects on the
profound connection he had with Mr Lamb and grieves the loss of
his death.
With the help of Mr Lamb, Derry realized the importance of looking
beyond physical appearances and finding inner strength.
The Play “ On the Face of it” highlights the transformative power of
kindness, empathy and understanding even in the face of adversity
SUMMARY
SUMMARY
The story begins with a teenage boy entering a garden. His
face is burnt on one side due to an accident when acid fell
on half of his face.

He has gone there to hide as he is afraid of facing people.


But when he enters, he finds someone already presents
there.

He tries to leave the place but he is stopped by the old


man, Mr. Lamb, the owner of the garden. Mr. Lamb
welcomes him and tells him not to leave.
SUMMARY
Derry wants to leave as he thinks people get afraid
of his looks but Mr. Lamb insists he stay there.

They enter into a conversation that how Derry is


not liked by anyone however Mr. Lamb tries to
console him.

He tells him that he has a tin leg and kids make fun
of him. Still, he is not depressed and enjoys his life.
SUMMARY
Mr. Lamb keeps on telling him to think of the positive
things and soon they become friends.

Derry tells him that he had come too far from his home
and hadn’t told anything about this to his mother due to
which Mr. Lamb asks Derry to ask her mother’s
permission.

Derry finds it difficult and quarrels but at last, he told


him to come back after taking his mother’s permission.
SUMMARY
His mother didn’t want him to go back but he comes back
again.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lamb climbs the ladder on his own to pluck


the crab apples as he was sure that Derry would not return.

But unfortunately Mr. Lamb falls from his ladder and dies.
Derry, on the other hand, returns to the garden to help him.

Derry tries hard to make him move but did not get any
response from him.

Justification of the Title
The title "On the Face of It" is justified as it
reflects the story's exploration of how

prejudice faced by individuals like Derry and
Mr. Lamb.
