Course Description

The trainees will have the understanding of the concept and classification of creative writings as
well as the major elements in different creative writings. They acquire skill of writing short
story, novella, short drama script, poem, essay, historical narratives etc in Afaan Oromoo. They
develop the skill of criticizing creative writings such as fictions (like short story, novella and
Novel), Poems, Drama scripts and other creative writings in Afaan Oromoo.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course the students will be able to:

• explain the concept and classification of creative writings,

• describe the major elements in different creative writings,

• Explain the concept of Creative Writing and Critical Theory.

• Identify the characteristics of the Writer as Artist

• Practice the skills writing fiction, short drama script, poem, Creative non-fiction

• Practice the skill of criticizing others Afaan Oromoo creative writings using selected criteria

• Appreciate creativity in Afaan Oromoo literature.

• Improve their communication skills and their confidence

5. Techniques Used in Creative Writing

• Dialogue, Metaphors and similes, Point of view, Anecdotes

• List of Writing Techniques: Rhetorical question, Alliteration, Assonance,

Onomatopoeia, Emotive Language, Colloquial Language, etc.

• Stages of the creative process.

Methodology: Lecture, Group discussion, Group work assignment which will be presented in

the class, Writing creative works, Presentation of Critics on selected creative writings

Assessment Mechanisms: Students will be assessed at least based on the following requirements:

• Continuous assessment (critical thinking, criticism ...) 10%

• Write different creative writing and submit (practical) 10%

• Mid-exam 30%

• Final exam 50%
