Mindfulness is being aware of the present moment (thoughts, urges,

behaviors) without judgment and without changing it. It is focusing

TEACHING WISE MIND
Draw it
Have the youth draw the two circles with the overlapping area in the middle that
represents Wise Mind. Writing is often a tool that facilitates learning, so make this as
tangible as possible using a physical whiteboard, piece of paper, or virtual whiteboard.

Find a situational example

When explaining this to youth have them think of a situation in the past week that was
emotionally activating or challenging. And then they can identify their emotional mind
thoughts, reasonable mind thoughts, and work to identify what their wise mind would
say. Using examples will help these concepts be relatable to kids and teens.

Help them identify the pros/cons

Have the youth identify the pros/cons of emotional mind and reasonable mind.
Write it out if possible and talk through where they default when stressed or activated.
